With the surge in global data consumption with proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), remote monitoring and control is increasingly becoming popular with a wide range of applications from emergency response in remote regions to monitoring of environmental parameters. Mesh networks are being employed to alleviate a number of issues associated with single-hop communication such as low area coverage, reliability, range and high energy consumption. Low-power Wireless Personal Area networks (LoWPANs) are being used to help realize and permeate the applicability of IoT. In this paper, we present the design and test of ieee 802.15.4-compliant smart IoT nodes with multi-hop routing. We first discuss the features of the software stack and design choices in hardware that resulted in high RF output power and then present field test results of different baseline network topologies in both rural and urban settings to demonstrate the deployability and scalability of our solution.

The clustering method is one of practical solutions to reduce energy consumption. Clustering protocols have to guarantee connectivity and reliability in WSNs even in large scale environments. With the application of routing information, various metaheuristics have been proposed for energy-efficient clustering to ensure reliability and connectivity in WSNs even in large scale environnements. In this paper, a new centralized hierarchical cluster-based routing algorithm is proposed which aims to mitigate energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of WSN's. The obtained results seemed that the proposed protocol outperforms other existing clustering protocols, on the basis of energy consumption, throughput, network lifetime and packet delivery as performance metrics.

Industrial automation is embracing wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication technology for industrial Internet of Things. Due to the strict real-time and reliability constraints imposed by industrial applications, industrial WSAN standards such as WirelessHART employ centralized management to facilitate deterministic communication. However, a centralized management architecture faces significant challenges to adapt to changing wireless conditions. While earlier research on industrial WSANs has primarily focused on improving the performance of the data plane, there has been limited attention on the control plane, which plays a crucial role for sustaining the data plane performance in dynamic environments. This paper presents REACT, a reliable, efficient, and adaptive control plane for industrial WSANs. Specifically optimized for network adaptation, REACT significantly reduces the latency and energy cost of network reconfiguration, thereby improving the agility of WSANs in dynamic environments. REACT comprises (1) a Reconfiguration Planner employing flexible scheduling and routing algorithms and reactive update policies to reduce rescheduling cost, and (2) an Update Engine providing efficient and reliable mechanisms to report link failures and disseminate updated schedules. REACT has been implemented for a WirelessHART protocol stack. Evaluation results based on two testbeds demonstrate that REACT can reduce network reconfiguration latency by 60% at 50% of energy cost when compared to standard approaches.

In recent research, clustering protocols have gained a lot of interest in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (HWSNs) because of handling many critical applications. This paper proposes the extension of MICHB (Modified Intelligent cluster head election based on Bacterial foraging optimization) for three level HWSNs. For this, we apply the MICHB algorithm to the existing protocols (ESEP and EDEEC), and propose MIESEP and MIEDEEC protocols which search sensor nodes (SNs) of high residual energies for cluster heads (CHs) election in distributed HWSNs. Consequently, provides minimized energy consumption, elongated stable period and proper load distribution in the network. Simulation results validate that proposed MIESEP and MIEDEEC protocols are capable in enhancing the overall network performance in distributed HWSNs.

Large scale UWSN are being built to monitor the aquatic environments for real-time aquatic applications like scientific exploration, coastline protection. There is a requirement for robust scalable UWSNs which require energy efficient routing making application scenario one of primary problem. UWSNs have unique features in the terms of latency, bandwidth, error probability, node mobility and 3-D space. Thus designing the network protocol for UWSNs is a complicated task. The design challenges for implementing the underwater networks are further analyzed in this paper. A study shows that UWSNs are challenging requiring integration of communication through acoustic waves, data processing and designing of network.

Every year, natural and human-induced disasters result in infrastructural damages, monetary costs, distresses, injuries and deaths. Unfortunately, climate change is strengthening the destructive power of natural disasters. In this context, distributed simulation-based disaster management and response systems have been proposed to cope with disasters and emergencies by training first responder with the latest ICT technology, and improving the disaster detection and search/rescue missions during disaster response. With the recent advances in wireless communication, and the proliferation of portable computer and micro-sensor devices, we are witnessing a growing interest in using wireless multimedia sensor networks and collaborative virtual environment technologies for safety and security class of applications. In this talk, we will give an overview of some research projects related to smart emergency preparedness and response that are currently being investigated at the PARADISE Research Laboratory at the Ottawa. We will show how collaborative virtual environment, context aware computing, wireless multimedia, and wireless sensor networks can be used to ensure public safety and security. We will focus upon the design of large-scale distributed simulation system for applications that require critical condition monitoring using both location/context aware computing and wireless sensor technologies. The second part of the talk will conclude by presenting two testbeds that are currently under development at PARADISE: the LIVE testbed, and the SWiMNet testbed. LIVE is a testbed for applications that require emergency preparedness and response. LIVE's architecture integrates wireless sensor networks with wireless multimedia and virtual environment technologies. SWiMNet is a testbed of a high-performance simulation system that supports very detailed and realistic model specifications to enable the design and evaluation of new protocols and applications for future generations o

The expansion of blockchain technologies from financial applications to other fields intensifies the problem of an increasing size of data stored in the blockchain. Unfortunately, new participants of the blockchain network are required to download the whole blockchain to gain an overview about the state of the system and to validate incoming transactions. Approaches like IOTA, SegWit or the Lightning network try to solve the scalability issues of blockchain applications. Unfortunately, they focus on strategies slowing down the blockchain's growth instead of reducing the problems arising from a growing chain or introduce new concepts to oust the linear blockchain altogether. The approach proposed in this paper is based on the idea of Ethereum to keep the state of the system explicitly in the current block but further pursues this by including the relevant part of the current system state in new transactions as well. This enables other participants to validate incoming transactions without having to download the whole blockchain initially. Following this idea use cases can be supported that require scalable blockchain technology but not necessarily an indefinite and complete transaction history.

RPL (the IETF Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy networks) and LRP (Lightweight Routing Protocol) have in common to build a collection tree (or, more precisely, a DODAG) and "downward" host routes in the wireless sensor network. Additionally, the objective of LRP is to keep control overhead as low as possible. To substantiate this claim, we compare RPL and LRP using 40 nodes of the IoT-LAB testbed - and the results are telling. We then introduce asymmetric links, which are unavoidable in most deployments, and measure their impact on the considered protocols in another set of experiments. We present the mechanisms that were introduced in LRP to deal with such cases and we report on extensive experiments involving RPL and LRP to analyze the behavior of both protocols when the links change or they exhibit asymmetry.

Geographical routing protocols scale well in large ad-hoc and sensor networks but fall short with some topologies. This causes packet losses and a drop in network performance. In this paper, we propose to introduce topological information aiming to improve the quality of routing decision while keeping the protocol scalable. Every node maintains precise information for nearby nodes and aggregated information for farther nodes by means of aggregate areas. Evaluation demonstrates the scalability of the proposition and its efficiency compared to a pure geographical routing protocol.
