The use of pressure sensors for data-driven leak detection and localization in water distribution networks has become an important issue in recent years. For this purpose, pressure sensors are placed at ideal positions of the network based on hydraulic modelling and the analysis of leak sensitivity matrices. However, continuous power supply is not always available at the calculated ideal sensor positions. Therefore, monitoring devices with energy-efficient pressure sensors and communication equipment, as well as systems to generate power on site are of particular interest. In contrast to the use of small-scale hydropower plants in gravitational water supply systems, which has been the subject of multiple research activities and has become state of the art in practice, the use of micro turbines as a power source for energy self-sufficient monitoring devices was only studied recently. In this work, we present tests of a micro turbine-based power supply concept for the prototype of an energy-efficient pressure-monitoring system. The monitoring device combines a low-power pressure sensor and a data logging and communication system in the form of a recently available Internet of Things (IoT) module in combination with compact, commercially available batteries. GSM is used to control the module and transmit data to a server. Since the monitoring device is intended to be placed at house connections, its overall size has to be kept small. To assess the feasibility of the monitoring device for energy self-sufficient operation at house connections of Alpine water distribution networks, extensive tests of a micro turbine were conducted at an experimental house connection in our laboratory. Additionally, power consumption of the monitoring device during operation was assessed in detail. Higher education is now facing big challenges about low course study completion and graduation degree completion rate, for which student study failure in course is the main reason. However, the failure in course study is a comprehensive result of various factors and is characterized by uncertainty. Artificial neural network approach is advantageous for dealing with this issue, and in this study we provided such an approach to predicting student study failure risk for early warning in course study based on the TensorFlow platform. In our model, for each student, four input variables: (1) times of login onto the online study system;(2) times of downloading study resource;(3) attendance earned points;and (4) assignment earned points, and one target variable: the final course grade point were collected for network training. At last, by validating with the observed data, consistency is shown between our predicted results and the actual observed data, which indicates that the employed model is a promising approach for identifying at-risk student. It is helpful for educators to timely apply corresponding strategic pedagogical interventions to help at-risk students avoid academic failure, and to effectively improve early warning education management.

In this paper, a Photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with Shunt hybrid active filter (SHAF) is coupled to three phase, four wire grid network. The proposed model uses a multilevel inverter configuration of three level H-bridge based Voltage source Inverter (VSI) for compensating load. Indirect current control technique is used for extraction of harmonics and calculating the reference current generation and found reliable performances related to conventional direct current control technique. For controlling the dc bus voltage, PI and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is implemented. The operation of proposed system using conventional PI is compared with the FLC and is analysed in both direct and indirect current control technique. The proposed model is run and analysed using MATLAB/ SIMULINK environment.

In recent years, security aspects of industrial control systems (ICS) have become a center of interest in cyberwarfare and engineering research, especially after the rise of advanced and sophisticated malware (e.g., stuxnet) specifically designed to target such systems for different malicious purposes including industrial espionage, physical damage, financial gains, etc. Of special interest to us are programmable logic controllers (PLC) which play a major role in ICS for process control purposes in different industries such as telecommunications, chemical processing, etc. A successful compromise of such controllers provides a malefic adversary the capability to inject arbitrary (malicious) code into the system in hopes of industrial process steering. Therefore, we investigate how a forward secure logging mechanism can be used for intrusion detection and prevention purposes in such cases. The proposed defense mechanism can be summarized in security-related information gathering and fast forward-secure logging by an intrusion detection agent, in addition to log analysis, incident identification and response by a trusted server. We implemented our proposal on the OpenPLC framework as the proof of concept and we show how our proposed scheme can be effective in order to detect and prevent adversaries from running arbitrary code on the controllers. The performance overhead we measured on our platform is at most 54 μs per scan cycle, which confirms how lightweight the presented solution is. © 2018 IEEE.

Occurrences of traffic signs that belong to certain sign categories and occurrences of crossroads of various topologies are utilized in detecting change in the urban road environment that moves past an ego-car. Three urban environment types, namely downtown, residential and industrial/commercial areas, are considered in the study and changes between these are to be detected. In the preparatory phase, the ego-car is used for traffic sign and crossroads data collection. In the application phase, the ego-car hosts an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that captures and analyzes images of the road environment and computes the required input data to the proposed road environment detection (RoED) subsystem. A statistical inference method relying on the minimum description length (MDL) principle was applied to the change detection problem at hand. The above occurrences along a route are seen as a realization of an inhomogeneous marked Poisson process. Page-Hinkley change detectors tuned to empirical data were set to work to detect change in the urban road environment. The process and the quality of the change detection are demonstrated via examples from three urban settlements in Hungary.

Cloud storage services provide us convenience for storing and sharing vast amounts of data by its low cost, high scalability and other advantages while it brings out security risks as well. A user-controlled encrypted data sharing model in cloud storage (UESMCS) is put forward hereby. It pre-processes user data to ensure the confidentiality and integrity based on triple encryption scheme of CP-ABE ciphertext access control mechanism and integrity verification. Thus, the reliability and safety for data sharing can be achieved provided the trustworthy third party being brought in. The experimental results show that UESMCS ensures data security in cloud storage services platform and enhances the operational performance for data sharing. The security sharing mechanism perfectly fits the actual cloud storage environment.

In this paper, we consider the problem of vehicular positioning enhancement with emerging connected vehicles (CV) technologies. In order to actually describe the scenario, the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) filter is used for depicting varies of observation models. A CV-enhanced IMM filtering approach is proposed to locate a vehicle by data fusion from both coarse GPS data and the Doppler frequency shifts (DFS) measured from dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) radio signals. Simulation results state the effectiveness of the proposed approach called CV-IMM-EKF. © 2018, ICst Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Present research paper focuses reactive power management & voltage instability issues of a wind energy based dispersed power generating station. The iterative performances of PID controller as well as the robust H ∞ damping controller of the hybrid power system is designed through linear matrix inequalities (LMI) approach. The stability aspects of dispersed wind energy based HPS are considered for discussion where the issue of reactive power compensation is addressed by linear static var compensator (SVC) controller. The control aspects of SVC as well as the whole hybrid system are taken care by H ∞ linear matrix inequalities approach. The iterative LMI method has been implemented for tuning the gains of PID controller with H ∞ design by the help of iterative LMI. The wind-diesel hybrid system is also implemented experimentally where a proto type hardware model has been established by taking the help of dSPACE real time control environment. In this case dSPACE 1104 is added for data acquisition and control. Experimental results obtained during practical case analysis justify the simulation results of MATLAB. Adaptability and robustness of the proposed controllers are achieved under fluctuating loads and wind power uncertainty.

In this study, flux-observer-based speed estimation was used to achieve stator field orientation control (SFOC) of an induction motor (IM) drive utilizing both stator current and stator flux, and the stator current was obtained from an IM by utilizing Hall effect current sensors. The speed estimation scheme was designed in accordance with the Lyapunov stability theory, and the flux observer gain matrix was acquired by the application of a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The MATLAB/Simulink toolbox was used for simulation, and all the control algorithms were realized using a 32-bit RX62T micro controller to generate pulse width modulation (PWM) signals to the power stage, to drive the motor, and to validate this approach. Both simulation and experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Visual Servo strategy for Robot Soccer Systems

In this paper, we propose a visual servo strategy scheme for robot soccer systems. All the controls of androids are based on the image processing of top-view screens captured by an overhead CCD camera upon the game field. To separate the targets from the background, a self-organizing map neural network (SOMNN)-based image processing scheme is proposed, in which the gravity of every color is calculated using the algorithms of image filtering, division, and morphology. It provides the coordinates and heading angle of every soccer android using the information of color pitches. The decision-making subsystem adopts the A* algorithm to determine a collision-free, direct, and optimal path so that the androids can trace a ball faster and kick well. The experimental results in the real FIRA AndroSot games demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed visual control system.
