The fractal transform is a recently developed tool for image analysis and patternrecognition. Problems relating to pixel based image resolution are highlighted. The fractal transform is outlined and shown to be a solution to pixel based image resolution related problems. MatchMaker, a technique based on fractal transform analysis is analyzed and its ability to find objects in complex scenes is confirmed. A new neural network paradigm, called the fractal transform network, is described. Built from neural network elements commonly described in the classic neural network literature, it is shown that this new paradigm can implement the MatchMaker technique and other fractal transform processes as highly parallel networks.

This paper presents an efficient algorithm to find the shape of a set of digital points. We compute the true digital Voronoi tessellation in O(m/sup 2/) complexity. The algorithm needs an m/spl times/m image and the coordinates of the n initial points. The shape is then computed, in O(n) expected time, as a subgraph of the Delaunay triangulation.< >

Recent advances in mathematical theory related to the representation of signals and images by some limited-extent-wave functions have generated substantial interest in applications of waveforms that are localized in both time (space) and frequency (spatial frequency) domains to signal and imageprocessing, patternrecognition, data compression, and neural networks. As a particularly useful model, the so-called wavelet transforms provide a variety of multiresolution signal (image) time-frequency or space-frequency decomposition tools. digital parallel implementations of the wavelet transforms are computationally intensive both because of the nature of the coordinate dilation and erosion of these transforms and because of the large quantity of convolution/correlation operations accompanied. This paper is intended to outline some of the most useful properties of the wavelet transforms, their similarities, and differences to other known joint representations. The links between the wavelet transforms and optics also are discussed.
