This paper illustrates how automated image preprocessing can improve OCR results of an important 19th century series of Greek authors. The roughly 75,000 ancient Greek pages from the volumes published by J.-P. Migne known today as Patrologia Graeca have a wholly regular layout, but one that is not easily reduced to a reading order by standard layout-analysis algorithms. We use a Hough transform and k-nearest-neighbor distance rejection to locate and then remove the features that confuse modern layout analysis. This allows us to separate the valuable Greek text from the less useful Latin translation, greatly simplifying later stages of processing, including de-hyphenation, automatic spell-checking and editing. Our implementation is based upon the Gamera Python package. We make the source code of our solution freely available.

In recent years, more data are created in digital form allowing easy control over storage and manipulation due to the technology progress. Unfortunately, this progress may have dragged along a lot of risks, especially the ones related to the security of digital files. In particular, digital forgery becomes a worry for many organizations because it has become easier to create fake images without leaving any obvious perceptual traces of tampering. A specific form of image forgery operation called “copy-move” is considered one of the most difficult problems in the case of forgery detection. For this case, a part of the image is copied and pasted on another location of the same image to conceal undesirable objects in the scene. In this paper, we propose a method that automatically detects duplicated regions in the same image. Duplicated detection is performed by identifying the local characteristics of the images (points of interest) using the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) method and by matching between identical features using the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method. Obtained results show that our proposed hybrid method is robust to geometrical transformations and is able to detect with high performance duplicated regions.

This paper presents a new method for facial expression modelling and recognition based on diffeomorphic image registration parameterised via stationary velocity fields in Log-Euclidean framework. The validation and comparison are done using different statistical shape models (SSM) built using the Point Distribution Model (PDM), velocity fields, and deformation fields. The obtained results show that the facial expression representation based on stationary velocity field can be successfully utilised in facial expression recognition, and this parameterisation produces higher recognition rate than the facial expression representation based on deformation fields.

Corn leaf diseases are automatically recognized by digital image processing techniques and pattern recognition method. The method is separated into three steps. First, the gray-scale images are gotten from color images which were caught by numeral camera, which is enhanced by histogram equalization method, and the unwanted noise is removed from the image. Secondly, the disease spots were segmented from leaves based on the iterative threshold method and morphological methods. Finally, the shape characteristic parameters of disease spots, such as area, perimeter, rectangularity, circularity and shape complexity, are extracted, which are used to identify and diagnose diseases. The results show that the corn leaf diseases of the 30 images could be well diagnosed with a diagnostic rate of 80%.

Mechanical counters are still very common in electricity, water and gas meters. Automatic readout of the dial count without modifying the mechanics of the counter is only possible using expensive image processing methods. Therefore the topic of this report is a new method for automatically reading out the counter values without the need of additional mechanical or parallel electronic parts inside the counter. Instead the different reflection properties of the different digits are measured and evaluated. This is done using only simple electronic parts and a microcontroller. In the first part of the paper the hardware for measuring the reflection values is presented. A model of this hardware with special emphasis on the influences of the environment is discussed in the next part. Following this, two classification methods, for distinguishing the digits are analyzed. For showing the properties of the new readout system measurements and simulations are given in the end.

image representation has always been an important and interesting topic in image processing and pattern recognition. In 1999, Bribiesca introduced a new two dimensional chain code scheme called Vertex Chain Code (VCC). VCC is composed of three regular cells, namely rectangular, triangular, and hexagonal. This paper presents the mapping algorithm that covers one of the VCC cells, the Triangular VCC cell. The mapping algorithm consists of a cell-representation algorithm that represents a thinned binary image into triangular cells, and a transcribing algorithm that transcribes the cells into Vertex Chain Code. The algorithms have been tested and validated by using three thinned binary images: L-block, hexagon and pentagon. The results show that this algorithm is capable of visualizing and transcribing them into VCC;it can also be improved by testing on more thinned binary images. © 2012 ICst Institute for Computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

In digital image forensics, camera model identification seeks for the source camera model information from the given images under investigation. To achieve this goal, one of the popular approaches is extracting from the images under investigation certain statistical features that capture the difference caused by camera structure and various in-camera image processing algorithms, followed by machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms for similarity measures of extracted features. In this paper, we propose to use uniform gray-scale invariant local binary patterns (LBP) as statistical features. Considering 8-neighbor binary co-occurrence, three groups of 59 local binary patterns are extracted from the spatial domain of red and green color channels, their corresponding prediction-error arrays, and their 1st-level diagonal wavelet sub bands of each image, respectively. Multi-class support vector machines are built for classification of 18 camera models from âDresden image Database'. Compared with the results reported in literatures, the detection accuracy reported in this paper is higher. © 2012 IEEE.

images with text are frequently used on Internet for different purposes. Automatic recognition of text from web images plays an important role on extraction and retrieval of web information. However, the web images are usually in low resolution with artifacts and special effects, which makes word recognition a challenge task even after the text has been localized. In this paper, we propose a robust text recognition technique to efficiently convert the web images into text format. The proposed technique first makes use of the L0 norm smoothing to increase the edge contrast of the input web images. The images are then binarized on each color channel. A connected component analysis is followed to identify the possible character components. Finally the character candidates are recognized by the OCR engine after skew correction. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the latest ICDAR 2011 robust reading competition dataset for born-digital text. The experimental results show the superior performance of our proposed technique. © 2012 ICPR Org Committee.
