The limitations of current internet-based learning systems (e.g., their inability to deal with diverse learners and requirements and the high cost of developing a new learning system) have lead to educational middleware that can handle diverse requirements and various learning components distributed over the internet. Following the paradigm of component-oriented development we have designed a learning middleware suite, called the Collaborative and Sharable Learning (CoSL) system. CoSL is both a platform for building e-learning systems and a tool set for making it easier to develop course materials for elearning. The CoSL system is context-independent so that its adaptation to a specific topic can be achieved with limited effort and time. To meet the challenging requirements of learning systems, the CoSL system has adopted three advanced techniques: (1) XML-based data exchange and integration, (2) agent-based communication and (3) data mining-based intelligent decision making. CoSL allows us to build and manage global learning systems in a distributed and heterogeneous environment. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

distributed Object computing (DOC) is an increasingly important computing paradigm exploiting the benefits of object-oriented technology and using the internet and its communications infrastructure as a vehicle for the delivery of a wide range of sophisticated value-added distributed services. ne integration of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and object-oriented programming languages facilitates the introduction and deployment of such applications in a platform-independent open distributed environment. In this paper, we introduce both CORBA and Java as tools to facilitate the development of distributed object computing-based applications, and we present a prototype electronic commerce application using the DOC paradigm.

Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) is the main protocol of the transport layer in today's internet. Many works have studied the performance of TCP and researcher are trying to analytically characterizing the throughput of TCP's congestion control mechanism. In this paper, we summarize the works and present the simulation result with large buffer size and give an qualitative analysis of the result. Our conclusion is that the RTT is not increased by linear, but by quadric when the buffer size of the bottleneck is large enough. Our goal is to estimate the average queue length of the buffer size and develop a TCP model based on RTT and the average queue length.

Developing Web-aware systems is one of the greatest challenges in the software industry today. Ideally, Web-aware systems should run on any machine connected to the internet and should be accessed from any Web browser. However, this ideal cannot be achieved with present Web technology, characterised by static client-server models and stateless communication protocols. The paper describes the GoWeb system, an active framework for Web-aware applications that aims to overcome these difficulties. It is based on a thin-client/fat server principle and uses object-based distributed techniques and the Java programming language. © 2000 IEEE.

MMM (Middleware for Method Management) is an infrastructure for managing the deployment, integration, distribution, and use of application services via the World Wide Web. Application services may range from a simple database access to a fully fledged application package. MMM propagates a software leasing paradigm, as opposed to the classical software licensing model. Applications reside and execute on the software provider's platforms, managed through the MMM middleware. Users interact with the application services through a standard internet browser, not requiring any additional software. This relieves user from software installation, maintenance, and upgrading overhead, while always offering the most recent software release. The MMM client component offers users a virtual file space, application service composition functions, execution support, and visualization features. These functions are all available through an internet browser. The MMM implementation is based on standard Web technologies, such as HTML, XML, and MetaHTML;distributed object computing frameworks, such as CORBA;and database technology, such as ODBC. In this paper we give a technical account of the MMM architecture and discuss its primary features. ©1999 ACM.

We describe three contributions for distributed resource allocation in scientific applications. First, we present an abstract model in which different resources are represented as tokens of different colors;processes acquire resources by acquiring these tokens. Second, we present distributed scheduling algorithms that allow multiple resource managers to determine custom policies to control allocation of the tokens representing their particular resources. These algorithms allow multiple resource managers, each with its own resource management policy, to collaborate in providing resources for the whole system. Third, we present an implementation of a distributed resource scheduling algorithm framework using our abstract model. This implementation uses Infospheres, which are internet communication packages written in Java, and shows the benefits of distributing the task of resource allocation to multiple resource managers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

Researchers in the ?eld of life sciences rely increasingly on information te- nology to extract and manage relevant knowledge. The complex computational and data management needs of life science research make Grid technologies an attractive support solution. However, many important issues must be addressed before the Life Science Grid becomes commonplace. The 1st international Life Science Grid Workshop (LSGRID 2004) was held in Kanazawa Japan, May 31–June 1, 2004. This workshop focused on life s- ence applications of grid systems especially for bionetwork research and systems biology which require heterogeneous data integration from genome to phenome, mathematical modeling and simulation from molecular to population levels, and high-performance computing including parallel processing, special hardware and grid computing. Fruitful discussions took place through 18 oral presentations, including a keynote address and ?ve invited talks, and 16 poster and demonstration p- sentations in the ?elds of grid infrastructure for life sciences, systems biology, massive data processing, databases and data grids, grid portals and pipelines for functional annotation, parallel and distributed applications, and life science grid projects. The workshop emphasized the practical aspects of grid techno- gies in terms of improving grid-enabled data/information/knowledge sharing, high-performance computing, and collaborative projects. There was agreement among the participants that the advancement of grid technologies for life science research requires further concerted actions and promotion of grid applications. We therefore concluded the workshop with the announcement of LSGRID 2005.

IP spoofing has been exploited by distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to conceal flooding sources and localities in flooding traffic, and prevent legitimate hosts into becoming reflectors, redirecting and amplifying flooding traffic. Thus, the ability to filter spoofed IP packets near victims is essential to their own protection as well as to their avoidance of becoming congestion and involuntary DoS reflectors. Although an attacker can forge any field in the IP header, he or she cannot falsify the number of hops an IP packet takes to reach its destination. This hopcount information can be inferred from the Time- to-Live (TTL) value in the IP header. Using a mapping between IP addresses and their hop-counts to an internet server, the server can distinguish spoofed IP packets from legitimate ones. Based on this observation, we present a novel filtering technique that is immediately deployable to weed out spoofed IP packets. We have an IP to Hop Count Mapping Table (IP2HC) to store the Hop Count Values. We implement HCF in the Linux kernel, demonstrating its benefits using experimental measurements. We deploy the security mechanism in Globus Toolkit (GT4) to ensure that HCF can identify the spoofed packet in a Grid Environment. © 2010 IEEE.

Sincerely welcome to proceedings of the 1st international conference on Trust and Privacy in Digital Business, Zaragoza, Spain, held from August 30th to September 1st, 2004. This conference was an outgrowth of the two successful TrustBus inter- tional workshops, held in 2002 and 2003 in conjunction with the DEXA conferences in Aix-en-Provence and in Prague. Being the first of a planned series of successful conferences it was our goal that this event would initiate a forum to bring together researchers from academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the state of the art of technology for establishing trust and privacy in digital business. We thank you all the attendees for coming to Zaragoza to participate and debate the new emerging advances in this area. The conference program consisted of one invited talk and nine regular technical papers sessions. The invited talk and keynote speech was delivered by Ahmed Patel from the Computer Networks and distributed Systems Research Group, University College Dublin, Ireland on “Developing Secure, Trusted and Auditable Services for E-Business: An Autonomic computing Approach”. A paper covering his talk is also contained in this book. The regular paper sessions covered a broad range of topics, from access control - sues to electronic voting, from trust and protocols to digital rights management. The conference attracted close to 100 submissions of which the program committee - cepted 29 papers for presentation and inclusion in the conference proceedings.
