This paper proposes an approach for embedding a complete binary tree with height k/spl times/(n-2/sup k/+1)+(k-2)/spl times/2/sup k/+1, where k=[log n], into an n-dimensional complete transposition graph (CT/sub n/), star graph (st/sub n/), and bubblesort graph (BS/sub n/) with dilations 1,3, and 2n-3 respectively. Furthermore, a fault-tolerant scheme is developed to recover multiple faults, and the dilations after recovery become at most 3,5, and 2n-1 for the CT/sub n/, st/sub n/, and BS/sub n/ respectively.

Task scheduling is an important part of any distributedcomputing environment. distributed task scheduling algorithms aim at attaining increased performance of a distributed system by distributing the tasks of distributed programs onto the processors of the system. In designing a task scheduling mechanism, one needs to evaluate performance of task scheduling algorithms in order to decide among several algorithms or several versions of an algorithm. This paper describes the design of a general simulation system for distributed task scheduling algorithms. The design is highly modular and provides a system that can be configured and extended to simulate and evaluate different algorithms under different environments. The implementation of DisMimic, a prototype of the simulation system is also described. The framework described in this paper provides a basis of building toolbox to simplify the study of distributed task scheduling algorithms.

New development in the design and implementation of a distributed, real-time image processing system is presented in this work. The system uses an IBM personal computer as the front end to a remote computer via the internet. The standard TCP/IP networking protocols are utilised to link the IBM-PC and high performance remote devices such as transputer networks and super-computers. The access to the powerful remote computers enables the system to complete complex image processing tasks in real-time. During processing the image is transferred to the remote machine and then transferred back to the PC for display. The system serves as a prototype for a full-feature image processing and analysis package, as well as a programming platform for the research and development of new image processing algorithms.
