PDC at UM, is a series of "codeless" modules consisting of visualizations, simulations, and demonstrations which introduce Parallel and distributed computing (PDC) concepts in early computing courses. These materials are codeless because they do not require students to write or understand code. Instead, students read a short introduction to a PDC concept and Then engage with a web-based visualization and/or (code-based) demonstration reinforcing the concept. The codeless nature of these modules makes them suitable for computing and non computing majors. To test the effectiveness of our modules we introduced them into two CSI courses and designed and administered a pre/posttest. Our results show statistically significant results: those who engaged with our modules substantially improved their knowledge and understanding of PDC concepts. Our modules also improved student attitudes, confidence and self-efficacy with respect to PDC topics. We also provide some qualitative observations of our study and identify common misconceptions students have about PDC.

The rapid development of internet of Things (IoT) technology has provided new opportunities for constructing smart leisure venue management systems. This paper proposes an IoT-based intelligent leisure venue management system, employing a layered architectural design that includes data acquisition, data analysis, intelligent decision-making, and application service layers. The data acquisition layer collects environmental and user behavior data through distributed sensor networks and RFID technology. The data analysis layer utilizes big data processing techniques to achieve real-time data fusion and cleansing. The intelligent decision-making layer optimizes venue operations using reinforcement learning algorithms, while the application service layer offers personalized services and visual interfaces to users and managers. Experimental results demonstrate that the system excels in data acquisition accuracy, real-time processing capability, visitor flow prediction accuracy, and energy consumption optimization, effectively enhancing venue operational efficiency and user satisfaction. The conclusion highlights that the system has room for improvement in handling peak period visitor statistics. Future work will focus on optimizing algorithms and enhancing system scalability to further improve overall performance. © 2025 The Authors.

Information about every criminal case is kept in a very secret police case database system. During the course of an investigation and case resolution, criminal information is handled differently in each case. However, the traditional police case information management system is not extremely secure. Although every police station has a system for recording criminal history, the data transfer is still not transparent. Many police stations still run their operations with manual systems. Any unethical action might cause unfairness for the victims. As a result, we are offering a secure platform that combines the openness as well as adaptability of smart contract-based systems with the accuracy and secrecy of current police case schemes. We have created a smart contract on the blockchain's Go Ethereum platform using the Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus mechanism to verify the user and offer transparency for the security of criminal records and evidence. Our proposed solution runs on a distributed network for the best possible data security that adheres to the Web 3.0 model. © 2024 IEEE.

The pioneering research on message passing for Java (MPJ) which started after 1995 provided a crucially important framework and programming environment for parallel and distributed computing with Java. This framework resulted in an industry standard specification and a novel MPJ-based hierarchical development methodology for a new generation of large-scale distributed systems. The invention of a novel component-based model and methodology for rapid distributed software development and execution based on the MPJ work and achievements are the core contributions presented in this paper. Based on the high-performance Java component-based model, concepts and research results, grid, cloud, and extreme-scale computing represent a fundamental shift in the delivery of information technology services that has permanently changed the computing landscape.

Wireless connectivity presents numerous benefits alongside the alteration of an organization's broader information security risk landscape and introduces novel security vulnerabilities. While the conventional response to vulnerabilities often involves the deployment of technological remedies, addressing wireless security predominantly hinges on effective managerial strategies. The concept of smart cities has the potential to revolutionise city life with the advent of 5G networks and the IoT. This article examines the potential integration of 5G and IoT technology into future urban planning to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and people' quality of life. A comprehensive system requires the integration of intelligent transportation, energy management, healthcare, and urban planning. Issues related to cybersecurity, infrastructure needs, and regulatory frameworks are also comprehensively analyzed. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are a necessary principle in WSN security, which can successfully prevent various hackers' and intruders' attempts to hack the network. In this research, we address the problem of achieving high accuracy in detecting intrusions in WSNs due to specific characteristics of WSN data, including the appropriate dataset, the drawbacks of feature selection, and choosing the proper algorithms for the classification process. In this paper, we proposed the anomaly-based IDS model using the DNN algorithm and mutual information (MI) technology to select features. The proposed model has been implemented using the Python language used in the Anaconda platform and relying on the standard NSL-KDD dataset. The experimental results showed the capability of the proposed model to achieve high-performance accuracy in intrusion detection using the DNN algorithm compared to the state-of-the-art. The proposed model outperforms other previous relevant works by 3.65% enhancement in terms of accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

In the last period, realizing the smart cities vision has required utilizing many technologies, such as internet of things and others. Our investigation in this study reveals that semantic internet of things technologies have a vital role in addressing essential issues in smart cities, primarily interoperability issues. Hence, in this paper we extrapolate and highlight the potentials of semantic internet of things in smart cities based on examining many sample cases. Additionally, this paper provides a general roadmap and an abstract architecture to facilitate exploiting semantic internet of things in smart cities. Common frameworks, ontologies, standards, and tools that are used in many sample cases are extracted and accentuated. The study also pinpoints the most frequent quality attributes that are considered in semantic internet of things in smart cities' field. Finally, the paper identifies the ongoing issues that still require improvement regarding the semantic internet of things in smart cities. © 2023 IEEE.

With the increasing number of factories in the world, it becomes necessary to monitor the factory environment and other safety parameters to provide an eco-workspace for the workers. This paper presents an innovative solution to enhance workplace safety and environmental monitoring in factories. This system integrates multiple sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, air quality, and noise level. It also aims to provide a timely and effective way of notifying workers during critical circumstances such as gas leakage and fire incidents. The collected data from the sensors is analyzed and transmitted to the cloud. The system shows real-time monitoring of the environment in factories by using the concept of the internet of Things (IoT) on the ThingSpeak cloud. This study contributes to the improvement of factory workplace safety and environmental quality, ultimately reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing overall productivity in factory workplaces. The system presented utilizes a centralized dashboard for real-time observation and analytics that enables remote access to supervise the conditions in accordance with the factory environment. This complete solution, aimed at the growing importance of proactive measures in issues related to factory safety and environmental concerns, creates a favorable environment along with security for workers while making production processes more efficient. © 2024 IEEE.
