The recent advent and wide diffusion of generative AI has initiated a fundamental change in how software is developed. This technology is just one innovation along a long arc of disruptions in software engineering that include the internet, high-level programming languages, integrated development environments, open source, agile development, and social coding environments. Disruptive technologies such as these show the potential to augment and accelerate development activities along many socio-technical dimensions, while altering fundamental business processes and paradigms. Yet paradoxically, these innovations have the potential to eventually undermine the very advancements they seek to promote, rendering technologies and methods obsolete [1].When any new disruptive technology emerges, successful software companies that traditionally respond well to incremental innovations often fail when they suffer from inertia to change or don’t anticipate how people will interact with the new technology. Similarly, researchers constrained by rigid research discipline can be slow to react, and may fail to recognize important and urgent societal and industrial needs. Researchers and companies alike may struggle in knowing which metrics to use and even how to measure the impact of change, further misleading their efforts to *** this talk, I question the way we select research questions in software engineering and how we study them, particularly in the face of innovations such as generative AI. To provoke a change in our research, I introduce a disruptive playbook to steer us towards broader and more novel research directions. This step-by-step playbook is first illustrated by applying it to a prior disruptive technology, stack Overflow. I will discuss how the playbook provides a new lens for reflecting on this body of research and how doing so reveals new insights. I then use the playbook, assisted with a customized research playbook GPT, to brainstorm and frame new research

This paper presents the results of developing smart technologies and computer systems for data and knowledge gathering, integration, interpretation, and visualization, and the implementation of the results as an integrated information-analytic platform (IAP) of complex objects (CO) life cycle (LC) proactive control. The implementation employs an original approach to operation and design of IAP of CO LC proactive control based on the use of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and intellectual interfaces (InIf). This combination ensures effective cooperation between structural or/and functional elements, and facilitates proactive control of those elements’ LCs based on continuous processing of information flow generated by sensors and devices. The created InIfs implementing means of visual programming provide a user with an adjustable environment making the interaction between the user and IAP of CO LC proactive control seamless. The simplicity of interaction is increased even further through the use of user’s subject area terminology. The practical value of the developed IAP is its replicability and multifunctionality that made it possible to implement a broad spectrum of custom-built information systems one of which is the unified spacecraft component electronic passport containing the actual information on the state of the component throughout the entirety of its life cycle, thus eliminating ambiguity and reducing information incompleteness. Another project an IAP was applied in was the production of mobile RFID-based civil airlines service CPSs. The primary advantage of those systems is that they are autonomous and have a capacity for real time system supervision and control. Such IAPs have already been developed and deployed for 17 Roscosmos subsidiary engineering and service companies, as well as for Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Vladivostok airports having 75 of those in total. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Machine learning (ML) has been actively adopted in Linear programming (LP) and Mixed-Integer Linear programming (MILP), whose potential is hindered by instance scarcity. Current synthetic instance generation methods often fall short in closely mirroring the distribution of original datasets or ensuring the feasibility and boundedness of the generated data -- a critical requirement for obtaining reliable supervised labels in model training. In this paper, we present a diffusion-based LP/MILP instance generative framework called MILP-FBGen. It strikes a balance between structural similarity and novelty while maintaining feasibility/boundedness via a meticulously designed structure-preserving generation module and a feasibility/boundedness-constrained sampling module. Our method shows superiority on two fronts: 1) preservation of key properties (hardness, feasibility, and boundedness) of LP/MILP instances, and 2) enhanced performance on downstream tasks. Extensive studies show two-fold superiority that our method ensures higher distributional similarity and 100% feasibility in both easy and hard datasets, surpassing current state-of-the-art techniques.

The machine learning uses statistical algorithms to provide the ability to learn with and without data programming. Image classifier is used to categorize a subject or an object present in an image into predefined classes. A statistical algorithm used in numerous fields like pattern classification, regression, control systems, identification, and prediction. This research paper presents a novel approach performance comparison of machine learning classifiers used for the classification of ultrasonic fetal images. It presents Gabor feature extraction and various classification techniques to classify three different classes of ultrasound images. The proposed method is presented as follows. Initially, the Gabor features are obtained from raw images. To remove redundancy in features and dimensionality reduction principal component analysis (PCA) is applied. Finally, the features obtained from PCA are fed to the various machine learning classifiers and its performances are evaluated. The simulations results are carried out using MATLAB image processing toolbox. From the results, it is observed that decision tree (DT) algorithm and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) perform to be closer and this classifier outperforms all other classifiers. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2021.

Grasping is the first step in most robotic manipulation tasks, and it is essential for applications of robots in real-life scenarios. For humans, grasping novel objects is a naturally gained ability, however, for robots, it is a challenging task due to complex object shapes and incomplete visual information. Many current grasp pose estimation methods need to first construct 3D models of the scene and generates a large pool of grasp candidates, and then perform a search for the best grasp. These methods rely on high quality 3D models, and their long pipeline makes them unfeasible for real-time processing. End-to-end grasp pose estimation methods mitigate these issues, but they can only deals with few DoF planar grasps that fail to cover many successful grasps. In this paper, we propose a viewing angle generative network (VAGN), an approach that bridges the aforementioned two main classes of methods. VAGN decouples 7-DoF grasp detection into two stages. In the first stage, it predicts the camera viewing angle, which is also the orientation of the gripper around the object from an RGBD frame. In the second stage, it generates a planar grasp pose by taking another RGBD image at the predicted viewing angle in stage 1. We trained VAGN on the Cornell dataset. Real robot experiments on a UR-10e robot with camera-in-hand show real-time processing speed and higher success rates compared to the state-of-the-art GR-ConvNet, in both single object scenes and cluttered scenes. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Although earthbag construction is recognizably a low environmental impact solution, existing software tools are limiting factors, since they do not have enough technical data to support its building information model. We propose a visual programming language code to generate earthbag domes inserted in a BIM environment, where these structures can be associated with other design and structural elements, producing the required technical data to inform construction including technical specifications as well as material and task quantification. This research adopted an experimental methodology exploring the advantages of the combination of Building Information modelling with parametric generative design in of the design of earthbag buildings or hybrid constructions involving earthbag walls of different geometries. It was validated resorting to a simulation process where it was possible to redesign and 3D print a scaled model of an existing earthbag building that merges different shapes in the same building, including the automated generation of the associated technical data. The developed tool allows designing different types of earthbag buildings providing a typical BIM model including both geometric model and technical specifications. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents an automated system that can effectively support human work, thereby speeding up the Computer Aided Designing process. The motivation of the research and development task was to implement a module in an existing CAD system which can calculate the center of gravity, which requires investigating the distribution of the mass. There were complex CAD models designed in the application called Siemens NX. It has some built-in functions for designers for supporting the calculations. The first chapter of the paper overviews the mathematical background of the calculation. For software development point of view, the authors investigated the programming facilities of Siemens NX. Investigations showed that the first task is to assign material properties for the components that are in the design. Our goal was to automate this task as the manual material attribute assignment is time-consuming and potentially leads to errors. To perform this task, the relevant documentation and literature have been reviewed. A recently published model carries out material assignments by identifying the relationship between shape, functionality, and material in parts. There is a study that analyses the basic concepts and relationships affecting all aspects of material selection. In this paper, a new software component is presented, providing an approach for material assignment. The center of gravity calculation based on the valid material data then provides a reliable result. The Siemens NX software plug-in developed by the authors has been installed and actively used by our industrial partner. © 2020 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has proven its value both on the supply-chain and process tooling. Concerning the mouldmaking industry, many studies have been conducted, providing useful information about this manufacturing approach on the mould insert’s effectiveness on the mould’s cooling stage. Therefore, it is important to assess the feasibility of the use of AM in other mould components where temperature also plays an important role on cycle time. Furthermore, the freeform capacity of the manufacturing process also enables innovative and/or optimized solutions for mould components, providing a significant economic impact, resulting both from mould operation (reduced cycle time) and component’s production (conventional manufacturing vs. AM). This work aims also to evaluate the concept of mass customization by developing a common geometry for a hot-runner nozzle bushing, enabling its automatic customization depending on the hot-runner nozzle manufacturer and the cooling requirements of the nozzle. Additionally, generative design is also used to optimize the bushing’s volume, reducing build time and costs, providing a more effective cooling of the hot-runners nozzle tip. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
