Interest in the hybrid system is rapidly increasing with the improvement of battery energy storage system. The hybrid system comprising AC and DC sources connected to the grid is of more interest. For interconnection of the sources, interlinking converters are required to maintain the power balance between source and load. An intelligent, simple and effective power-sharing control for hybrid system is proposed in this paper. The controller manages the active power sharing along with maintaining constant DC voltage while accounting battery energy storage system (BESS). To verify the proposed method, a test system is developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment where photovoltaic (PV), fuel cell, and battery are elected as the primary distributed sources.

The cycloconverter is able to vary voltage and frequency simultaneously to control the induction machine at rated air gap flux. Due to switching operation and phase control approach of cycloconverter, it produces harmonics in supply current and demands additional reactive power from the supply. The shunt active power filter is developed to compensate the harmonic currents and reactive power demand. A fuzzy logic based controller is used to generate the reference current of the active power filter by using hysteresis band current control technique. Therefore, active power filter improves the Total HarmonicDistortion (THD) and supply power factor of the cyclo-converter fed induction machine. This paper presents MATLAB/Simulation of fuzzy logic based shunt active power filter to improve the performance of cycloconverter fed induction machine.

students earlier were reluctant to adopt smart techniques for controlling for various reasons like stabilizing properties and characteristics of performance could not be verified, analytical comparison of its advantages/disadvantages over other conventional methods were not known and moreover the approaches were not widely used by working engineers. Whereas newer intelligent control technologies like fuzzy, neural and hybrid controls are being adopted now-a-days. Fuzzy logic is an effective controller tool where variable relationships can be represented in logical form. Fuzzy logic quantifies the linguistic variable terms so that they can be described as continuous values and allows mathematical equations to represent the system characteristics and responses. In process or manufacturing industries like PI or PID techniques of control, are widely adopted due to their simple method, their easy operation, and its tuning techniques are easy to understand.

Modern technology developed in renewables has opened a door to utilize micro hydro as one of the major sources of energy in micro-grid in terms of capital investment and sustainability. With such developments, frequency and voltage variation in micro-grid arise as a major concern where conventional control technique fails. This has driven the idea to develop electronic load controller to dump extra power hence minimizing the frequency variations. As the efficiency is reduced using such methods, batteries are applied in micro hydro to store the dumped power. However, to improve both voltage and frequency, combination of ELC and stATCOM are developed. Further, in order to improve the system performance, modifications in ELC corresponding to the load configuration were developed and proved to be beneficial. To improve the efficiency of the system, water heaters, pump loads, or other low wattage apparatus are also used. This paper presents a survey on various frequency and voltage control techniques available in small hydro system with their merits and demerits. The investigations on various problems demand further development.

Currently, energy consumption in the planet is high, public awareness of energy consumption, environmental protection and steady progress in the deregulation of conventional energy, distributed generation systems (based on hydrogen) have attracted increased interest. Fuel cell (FC) base and high-temperature systems also have great potential in future single-source or multisource (hybrid-HSE) applications due to their rapid technological development and numerous benefits such as well, as the appreciable efficiency, low emission (greenhouse gases) and flexible modular technology. Dynamic models for the main components of the system, namely the photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion system, fuel cells, electrolysers, electric power interconnection circuits, protective battery, storage tank of hydrogen, the gas compressors are developed. Two renewable energy modes, a photovoltaic field and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) or Dynamics of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) with hydrogen storage system for generating part of system electrical energy is presented. Feasibility of using fuel cell (FC) for this system is evaluated by means of simulations. The electrical dynamic model, temperature change and dual layer capacity effect are considered in all simulations. Photovoltaic system (PV) output current is connected to the bus. Using a MPPT (maximum power point tracker) which is an electronic DC to DC converter that optimizes the match between the solar array and utility grid. The proposed system utilizes an electrolyser (EL) to generate hydrogen and a tank for storage. Therefore, there is no need for batteries. Moreover, the generated oxygen could be used in FC's system and other applications. Moreover, such as the photovoltaic system, it is possible to connect fuel cell (FC) output voltage to DC bus alternatively. The highly dynamic, nonlinear and complex nature of power system may cause sustained Low Frequency Oscillations (LFOs) leading toward loss of synchronization of generating units. Current source based HVDC converters could be opted to damp LFOs effectively if output current signal is modulated through an auxiliary damping controller. In this paper, a direct adaptive model free Neuro-Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control (NFSMC) is used as a supplementary damping control to modulate the current signal for current source converter based HVDC link. The intelligent NFSMC lends the learning capability from hybrid neuro-fuzzy systems and dynamic mapping ability from the hyper surface of sliding mode control (SMC). The controller parameters are updated by using simple and fast Gradient descent back propagation. The control performance is verified on a modified Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system equipped with an HVDC line connecting single machine with the utility grid. Simulation results of NFSMC are compared with conventional controls such as Lead Lag Control (LLC) and Neuro-Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Control (NFTSKC). The oscillation suppression performance is assessed by computing settling time and Percentage Performance Indices (PPIs), which certify the better performance of the proposed controller. MATLAB-Simulink tool was used to perform nonlinear time domain simulations.

The steam generator is one of the most important equipment in nuclear power plants. The water level control of steam generators is a challenging problem due to its complicated characteristics. This paper studies a novel intelligent virtual reference feedback tuning method based on human learning optimization (IVRFTH) and applies it to the water level control, in which the optimal controller can be directly designed without knowing the mathematical model of the controlled object. The simulation results show that the developed IVRFTH surpasses the standard IVRFT method with the introduction of human learning optimization (HLO). As IVRFTH is easy to design the optimal controller without the model information, it is very promising for the engineering application.

Geyser which is a pressurized hot water container utilized in household causes the high power consumption and at the same time degrading the efficiency of the heating element due to heat loses, i.e., overheating of the element. This paper presents the smart geyser which operates in two modes (i) Autonomous Mode (ii) User Mode. A temperature sensor probe is used as a control switch which is used to regulate the water temperature of geyser by adjusting the heating duration of the element. The study reveals the control topologies used to reduce the power consumption and to increases the efficiency of the geyser. The system consists of Atmega16 microcontroller which determines the hot water profile through temperature probe in Autonomous Mode and in User Mode the controller regulates the temperature of geyser as per the demand profile developed by user. From the result it is apparent that by controlling the temperature of the geyser, the heat loses in the Geyser element and saving of electricity power consumption can be made. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2017.
