In this paper, we develop a variational method for the computation of average images of biological organs in three-dimensional Euclidean space. The average of three-dimensional biological organs is an essential feature to discriminate abnormal organs from normal organs. We combine the diffusion registration technique and optical flow computation for the computation of spatial deformation field between the averages and each input organ. We define the average as the shape which minimises the total deformation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper we propose a new continuous Shape from Texture (SfT) model for piecewise planar surfaces. It is based on the assumptions of texture homogeneity and perspective camera projection. We show that in this setting an unidirectional texture analysis suffices for performing SfT. With carefully chosen approximations and a separable representation, novel closed-form formulas for the surface orientation in terms of texture gradients are derived. On top of this model, we propose a SfT algorithm based on spatial derivatives of the dominant local spatial frequency in the source image. The method is motivated geometrically and it is justified rigorously by error estimates. The reliability of the algorithm is evaluated by synthetic and real world experiments. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We tackle the problem of perspective 3D-reconstruction of Lambertian surfaces through photometric stereo, in the presence of outliers to Lambert’s law, depth discontinuities, and unknown spatiallyvarying lightings. To this purpose, we introduce a robust L1-TV variational formulation of the recovery problem where the shape itself is the main unknown, which naturally enforces integrability and permits to avoid integrating the normal field. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The relations between linear system theory and mathematical morphology are mainly understood on a pure convolution/dilation level. A formal connection on the level of differential or pseudo-differential equations is still missing. In our paper we close this gap. We establish the sought relation by means of infinitesimal generators, exploring essential properties of the slope and a modified Cramér transform. As an application of our general theory, we derive the morphological counterparts of relativistic scale-spaces and of α-scale-spaces for α ∈ [1/2, ∞). Our findings are illustrated by experiments. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We introduce several new functionals, inspired from variational image denoising models, for recovering a piecewise-smooth surface from a dense estimation of its normal field (Sample codes for testing the proposed methods can be found on http://***/photome tricstereo/). In the weighted least-squares approach, the non-differentiable elements of the surface are a priori detected so as to weight the least-squares model. To avoid this detection step, we introduce reweighted least-squares for minimising an isotropic TV-like functional, and split-Bregman iterations for L1 minimisation. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Super-resolution combines several low resolution images having different sampling into a high resolution image. L1-norm data fit minimization has been proposed to solve this problem in a robust way. The outlier rejection capability of this methods has been shown experimentally for super-resolution. However, existing approaches add a regularization term to perform the minimization while it may not be necessary. In this paper, we recall the link between robustness to outliers and the sparse recovery framework. We use a slightly weaker Null space Property to characterize this capability. Then, we apply these results to super resolution and show both theoretically and experimentally that we can quantify the robustness to outliers with respect to the number of images. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

At present, many vision-based inspection methods are widely using for quality control in different fields. And the deep learning method has made a magnificent breakthrough in a variety of computer vision tasks, mainly through the use of largescale annotated datasets. Utilizing these progress is an option to improve defect segmentation performance. However, in the field of vision-based non-destructive testing (NDT), obtaining large scale annotated datasets is a great challenge. In this paper, a fully convolution neural network (FCN) is supervised trained using a small number of pixel-level annotated data for defect segmentation. Simultaneously, Cycle-Consistent Generative Adversarial Networks (CycleGANs) are used to learn the segmentation in an unsupervised way as a supplement. The requirement of annotated data is then reducing by utilizing many un-annotated data. Experiments on the published GDXray dataset show that the framework based on CycleGANs is effectiveness for defect image segmentation using only a few labelled samples. © 2020 IEEE.

In many practical problems wavelet theory offers methods to handle data in different scales. It is highly adaptable to represent data in a compact and sparse way without loss of information. We present an approach to find and classify defects on specular surfaces using pointwise extracted features in scale space. Our results confirm the presumption that the stationary wavelet transform is better suited to localize surface defects than the classical decimated transform. The classification is based on a support vector machine (SVM) and furthermore applicable to empirically evaluate given wavelets for specific classification tasks and can therefore be used as quality measure. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We present PDE-based Group Convolutional Neural Networks (PDE-G-CNNs) that generalize Group equivariant Convolutional Neural Networks (G-CNNs). In PDE-G-CNNs a network layer is a set of PDE-solvers where geometrically meaningful PDE-coefficients become trainable weights. The underlying PDEs are morphological and linear scale space PDEs on the homogeneous space Md of positions and orientations. They provide an equivariant, geometrical PDE-design and model interpretability of the network. The network is implemented by morphological convolutions with approximations to kernels solving morphological α -scale-space PDEs, and to linear convolutions solving linear α -scale-space PDEs. In the morphological setting, the parameter α regulates soft max-pooling over balls, whereas in the linear setting the cases α= 1 / 2 and α= 1 correspond to Poisson and Gaussian scale spaces respectively. We show that our analytic approximation kernels are accurate and practical. We build on techniques introduced by Weickert and Burgeth who revealed a key isomorphism between linear and morphological scale spaces via the Fourier-Cramér transform. It maps linear α -stable Lévy processes to Bellman processes. We generalize this to Md and exploit this relation between linear and morphological scale-space kernels. We present blood vessel segmentation experiments that show the benefits of PDE-G-CNNs compared to state-of-the-art G-CNNs: increase of performance along with a huge reduction in network parameters. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

We show how the axiomatic structure of scale-space theory can be applied to the auditory domain and be used for deriving idealized models of auditory receptive fields via scale-space principles. For defining a time-frequency transformation of a purely temporal signal, it is shown that the scale-space framework allows for a new way of deriving the Gabor and Gammatone filters as well as a novel family of generalized Gammatone filters with additional degrees of freedom to obtain different trade-offs between the spectral selectivity and the temporal delay of time-causal window functions. Applied to the definition of a second layer of receptive fields from the spectrogram, it is shown that the scale-space framework leads to two canonical families of spectro-temporal receptive fields, using a combination of Gaussian filters over the logspectral domain with either Gaussian filters or a cascade of first-order integrators over the temporal domain. These spectro-temporal receptive fields can be either separable over the time-frequency domain or be adapted to local glissando transformations that represent variations in logarithmic frequencies over time. Such idealized models of auditory receptive fields respect auditory invariances, can be used for computing basic auditory features for audio processing and lead to predictions about auditory receptive fields with good qualitative similarity to biological receptive fields in the inferior colliculus (ICC) and the primary auditory cortex (A1). © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.
