We consider detection of local image symmetry using linear filters. We prove a simple criterion for determining if a filter is sensitive to a group Of symmetries. We show that derivative-of-Gaussian (DtG) filters are excellent at detecting local image symmetry. Building on this, we propose a very simple algorithm that, based on the responses of a bank of six DtG filters, classifies each location of an image into one of seven Basic Image Features (BIFs). This effectively and efficiently realizes Marr's proposal for an image primal sketch. We Summarize results on the use of BIFs for texture classification, object category detection, and pixel classification.

In this paper, we aim to develop a criterion to select scale parameters, which control pre-smoothing for edge detection. We first formalise the Canny edge detector which extracts the zeros of bilinear form of the first- and the second-order derivatives of image intensity. Then, we show the bifurcation property of the edge curves at the singular points in the linear scale space. Finally using the scale space hierarchy of the singular point, we derive a criterion to select scale parameters for edge detection.

variational problems in vision are solved numerically on the pixel lattice because it provides the simplest computational grid to discretize the input images, even though a uniform grid seldom matches the complexity of the solution. To adapt the complexity of the discretization to the solution, it is necessary to adopt finite-element techniques that match the resolution of piecewise polynomial bases to the resolving power of the variational model, but such techniques have been overlooked for nonsmooth variational models. To address this issue, we investigate the pros and cons of finite-element discretizations for nonsmooth variational problems in vision, their multiresolution properties, and the optimization algorithms to solve them. Our 2 and 3D experiments in image segmentation, optical flow, stereo, and depth fusion reveal the conditions where finite-element can outperform finite-difference discretizations by achieving significant computational savings with a minor loss of accuracy.

Fractional calculus is an extension of integer-order differentiation and integration which explains many natural physical processes. New applications of the fractional calculus are in constant development. The current paper introduces fractional differentiation to feature detection in digital images. The Harris-Laplace feature detector is adapted to use the non-local properties of the fractional derivative to include more information about image pixel perturbations when quantifying features. Using fractional derivatives in the Harris-Laplace detector leads to higher repeatability when detecting features in grayscale images. Applications of this development are suggested.

We introduce a variational framework for separating shading and reflectance from a series of images acquired under different angles, when the geometry has already been estimated by multi-view stereo. Our formulation uses an l(1)-TV variational framework, where a robust photometric-based data term enforces adequation to the images, total variation ensures piecewise-smoothness of the reflectance, and an additional multi-view consistency term is introduced for resolving the arising ambiguities. Optimisation is carried out using an alternating optimisation strategy building upon iteratively reweighted least-squares. Preliminary results on both a synthetic dataset, using various lighting and reflectance scenarios, and a real dataset, confirm the potential of the proposed approach.

We introduce an algorithm for active contour segmentation in which the level set function encoding the contour is processed by median filtering using morphological amoebas. These are adaptive structure elements introduced by Lerallut et al. which can be combined with different morphological operations. Recently it has been proven that iterated amoeba median filtering of an image approximates the well-known self-snakes partial differential equation. Following this approach we prove a partial approximation property of amoeba active contours with respect to geodesic active contours. Experiments prove the viability of the algorithm and confirm the theoretical results.

Gaussian convolution is of fundamental importance in linear scale-space theory and in numerous applications. We introduce iterated extended box filtering as an efficient and highly accurate way to compute Gaussian convolution. Extended box filtering approximates a continuous box filter of arbitrary non-integer standard deviation. It provides a much better approximation to Gaussian convolution than conventional iterated box filtering. Moreover, it retains the efficiency benefits of iterated box filtering where the runtime is a linear function of the image size and does not depend on the standard deviation of the Gaussian. In a detailed mathematical analysis, we establish the fundamental properties of our approach and deduce its error bounds. An experimental evaluation shows the advantages of our method over classical implementations of Gaussian convolution in the spatial and the Fourier domain.

Classical ways to denoise images contaminated with multiplicative noise (e.g. speckle noise) are filtering, statistical (Bayesian) methods, variational methods and methods that convert the multiplicative noise into additive noise (using a logarithmic function) in order to apply a shrinkage estimation for the log-image data and transform back the result using an exponential function. We propose a new method that involves several stages: we apply a reasonable under-optimal hard-thresholding on the curvelet transform of the log-image;the latter is restored using a specialized hybrid variational method combining an l(1) data-fitting to the thresholded coefficients and a Total Variation regularization (TV) in the image domain;the restored image is an exponential of the obtained minimizer, weighted so that the mean of the original image is preserved. The minimization stage is realized using a properly adapted fast Douglas-Rachford splitting. The existence of a minimizer of our specialized criterion and the convergence of the minimization scheme are proved. The obtained numerical results outperform the main alternative methods.

A recent result by Lasica, Moll and Mucha about the l(1)-anisotropic Rudin-Osher-Fatemi model in R-2 asserts that the solution is piecewise constant on a rectilinear grid, if the datum is. By means of a new proof we extend this result to R-n. The core of our proof consists in showing that averaging operators associated to certain rectilinear grids map subgradients of the l(1)-anisotropic total variation seminorm to subgradients.

We introduce a novel scale-space concept that is inspired by inpainting-based lossy image compression and the recent denoising by inpainting method of Adam et al. (2017). In the discrete setting, the main idea behind these so-called sparsification scale-spaces is as follows: starting with the original image, one subsequently removes a pixel until a single pixel is left. In each removal step the missing data are interpolated with an inpainting method based on a partial differential equation. We demonstrate that under fairly mild assumptions on the inpainting operator this general concept indeed satisfies crucial scale-space properties such as gradual image simplification, a discrete semigroup property or invariances. Moreover, our experiments show that it can be tailored towards specific needs by selecting the inpainting operator and the pixel sparsification strategy in an appropriate way. This may lead either to uncommitted scale-spaces or to highly committed, image-adapted ones.
