In this paper, we describe our experiment related to using a humanoid robot as a companion for the elderly people. We have analyzed the needs of elderly people and mapped our use cases in accordance with those needs. We have implemented the functionality using IBM Watson and other libraries and performed an experiment at an old age home. Our humanoid robot can detect the user's mood and engage in a friendly conversation. The experiment also indicates that social acceptance ratio of humanoid robot among elderly people is high. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper we describe the development of a user interface for a liquid handling robot. We describe the user interface design process that we carried out, beginning with requirements analysis and rapid prototyping, followed by heuristic evaluation. We then demonstrate the resulting cloud interface where the robot is controlled remotely in a teleoperation mode to program common protocols in chemistry, and biology, laboratories. We describe the main characteristics of the web interface, focusing on solution strategies used to expose features for programming experiments, remotely. We also report on the System Usability Scale (SUS) scores obtained by testing the interface with 15 experts in the fields of chemistry, and biology.

We present a domain-decomposition-based preconditioner for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) that is resilient to both soft and hard faults. The algorithm reformulates the PDE as a sampling problem, followed by a solution update through data manipulation that is resilient to both soft and hard faults. This reformulation allows us to recast the problem as a set of independent tasks, and exploit data locality to reduce global communication. We discuss two different parallel implementations: (a) a single program multiple data (SPMD) version based on a one-to-one mapping between subdomain and MPI processes responsible for both state and computation;and (b) an asynchronous server-client implementation where all state information is held by the servers and clients are designed solely as computational units. We present a scalability comparison of both implementations under nominal conditions, showing efficiency within similar to 80% for up to 12,000 cores. We present a resilience analysis under different fault scenarios based on the server-client implementation. This framework provides resiliency to hard faults such that if a client crashes, it stops asking for work, and the servers simply distribute the work among all of the other clients alive. Erroneous subdomain solves (e.g. due to soft faults) appear as corrupted data, which is either rejected if that causes a task to fail, or is seamlessly filtered out during the regression stage through a suitable noise model. Three different types of faults are modeled: hard faults modeling nodes (or clients) crashing;soft faults occurring during the communication of the tasks between server and clients;and soft faults occurring during task execution. We demonstrate the resiliency of the approach for a 2D elliptic PDE, and explore the effect of the faults at various failure rates.

The purpose of this research is to obtain the monitoring system and temperature data recording a system based on National Instruments USB-6001 and to obtain a Human Machine Interface (HMI) which is suitable for monitoring the temperature process of the conversion POME into biogas on a laboratory scale using LabVIEW software. This study was conducted by two stages, hardware design and software design. In hardware design, a stirred tank and a PC were connected to the microcontroller hardware National Instruments USB-6001. The software design was consisted of the LabVIEW programming. The results indicated that the components were suitable for the monitoring process of the conversion POME were the National Instrument USB - 6001, series TC module to DC and 5 volt power source, as well as a temperature sensor used is a thermocouple type K. For HMI design using LabVIEW 2014 was in accordance with the needs with the graphic display of temperature conditions in real time from a stirred tank and the data logger was automatically stored in the Microsoft Excel. After completion of the design of HMI, thermocouple that is used is calibrated to obtained a linear equations of analog data versus temperature data from a digital thermometer so that the equation to be inputted into the program LabVIEW block diagram which was y = 0.0064x + 0.2217 with R2 value was 0.993. Afterward, the research was continued using a set point 55 C with a variation of hysteresis 1, 3, and 5 C. Data was obtained from this study then to be calculated the standard error values to compare the data generated from every variation of hysteresis. The results indicated that the best data on research was the data obtained using hysteresis 1 C from the set point temperature compared with the data on the hysteresis 3 and 5 C. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The work represents a dynamic programming and piecewise linearization based control strategy for a perturbed discrete-time nonlinear system. Firstly, the perturbed discrete-time nonlinear system is linearized at each sampling time. The origin system is approximated by infinite number of the linearized models. Then, the disturbances are estimated under the assumption of slow variations in input and state during a sampling period. Finally, a controller based on the dynamic programming method is designed. The proposed control strategy is applied to control a boiler-turbine system and compared to the other method with the usage of numerical simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed method gives better performance in term of overshoot and smoothness of control signals and it can be applied to other plants in industry.

This study explores the learning outcomes of utilizing a hands-on cross-platform mobile programming approach for introducing two important software engineering topics, namely, object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts and design patterns. This approach presents an innovative teaching methodology that aims to help addressing unique needs and expectations of Millennials and their prospective employers with regards to software engineering education. To conduct this project, a widely adopted cross-platform mobile application development framework in the industry called Codename One (CN1) is used. This paper first presents an extensive review of literature relevant to the use of mobile programming in computer science curricula. Then, based on experience on using CN1 as a novel teaching tool, insights are provided as to why CN1 is a suitable framework for teaching OOP concepts and design patterns, and how CN1 can be utilized to effectively teach these topics using hands-on learning techniques. Recommendations for the educators who would like to adapt CN1 as a teaching tool are also provided. Reflecting Millennials' intrinsic tendency to explore emerging mobile platforms, the learning outcomes of this study show that this programming approach increases Millennials' interest towards these software engineering concepts and improves student success. In addition, feedback from students suggests that this approach provides a competitive advantage to Millennials in the job market, which increasingly demands mobile application development skills.

Component-oriented programming languages(COPLs) bridge the gap between architecture descriptionlanguages (ADLs) and general purpose programming languages. COPLs emphasize designing software systems out of reusablecomponents which are connected by communication ports. These ports facilitate the design of highly modular softwarearchitecture. The flexibility of a component-based system, however, is partly dependent on the variety of ports andconnections that are available. More port and connectionfeatures enable system architects to design more loosely coupledand reusable software components. This paper introduces aprototype language extension to C#, called Copper, which addscomponent-oriented programming features to the developer'srepertoire. Copper is based on the Mono C# compiler, andprovides convenient syntax for connecting incompatible ports, connecting ports to multiple senders, embedding ports statically, and connecting ports to non-component services. Copper'sbackward compatibility with C# permits existing C# code to beincrementally refactored into a component-oriented style. © 2017 IEEE.

Genetic programming (GP) based modeling is suggested for modeling the variation of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) under controlled conditions in the presence and absence of toxicant. The results indicated that GP is able to evolve robust physically meaningful models even with small dataset by selecting the most relevant functions from the set of functions given for the modeling. It is interesting to note that the evolved models clearly reflect the underlying non-linearity of the process distinctly for both the case studies. © 2017, Springer international Publishing AG.

Context-dependent applications are relatively complex due to their multiple variations caused by context activation, especially in the presence of unanticipated adaptation. Testing these systems is challenging, as it is hard to reproduce the same execution environments. Therefore, a software failure caused by bugs is no exception. .is paper presents a rollback mechanism to recover from software failures as part of a role-based runtime with support for unanticipated adaptation. .e mechanism performs checkpoints before each adaptation and employs specialized sensors to detect bugs resulting from recent configuration changes. When the runtime detects a bug, it assumes that the bug belongs to the latest configuration. .e runtime rolls back to the recent checkpoint to recover and subsequently notifies the developer to €x the bug and re-Applying the adaptation through unanticipated adaptation. We prototype the concept as part of our role-based runtime engine LyRT and demonstrate the applicability of the rollback recovery mechanism for unanticipated adaptation in erroneous situations. © 2017 ACM.

In this study, we considered the flexible dispatch of thermoelectric and hydroelectric units in a smart power grid that includes a considerable amount of wind and solar energy. The parameters required for the generators were analyzed using real-world information provided by power companies through smart power metering sensors. We designed and tested an improved priority method and a filtering-constraint implicit enumeration algorithm to solve a large-scale unit commitment problem by means of nonlinear mixed integer programming. The algorithm, which was developed using MATLAB, avoided falling into local or infeasible solutions. A simulation proved that the priority method and algorithm successfully controlled ramp rates and optimized electrical power delivered through the grid, the system was secure, and the economic costs were minimal.
