Smart systems are characterised by their ability to analyse measured data in live and to react to changes according to expert rules. Therefore, such systems exploit appropriate data models together with actions, triggered by domain-related conditions. The challenge at hand is that smart systems usually need to process thousands of updates to detect which rules need to be triggered, often even on restricted hardware like a Raspberry Pi. Despite various approaches have been investigated to efficiently check conditions on data models, they either assume to fit into main memory or rely on high latency persistence storage systems that severely damage the reactivity of smart systems. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel composition process, which weaves executable rules into a data model with lazy loading abilities. We quantitatively show, on a smart building case study, that our approach can handle, at low latency, big sets of rules on top of large-scale data models on restricted hardware. © 2017 ACM.

Since different ontology matchers do not necessarily find the same correct correspondences, usually several competing matchers are applied to the same pair of ontology entities to increase evidence towards a potential match or mismatch. How to select, combine and tune various ontology matchers, so-called ontology meta-matching, is one of the main challenges in ontology matching domain. In recent years, Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) based ontology meta-matching technique has become the state-of-the-art methodology to solve the ontology meta-matching problem, but it suffers from some defects like the slow convergence, premature convergence and the huge memory consumption. To overcome these drawbacks, in this paper, a Compact EA (CEA) based ontology meta-matching technique is proposed, which makes use of a probabilistic representation of the population to perform the optimization process. In particular, we construct an optimal model for the ontology meta-matching problem, propose a problem-specific CEA to optimize the aggregating weights of various matchers, and utilize a Cross Sum Quality Measure (CSQM) to adaptively extract the final alignment. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms other EA based ontology matching techniques and Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI 2016)’s participants. © Springer international Publishing AG 2018.

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in casting graph algorithms in the language of linear algebra. By replacing the computations with appropriate operations over different semi-rings, different graph algorithms can be cast as a sequence of linear algebra operations. In this paper, we show that this recent trend allows us to leverage the Formal Linear Algebra Methods Environment (FLAME) methodology to formally specify, derive and implement a family of graph algorithms for counting the number of triangles (3-cliques) in a graph. In addition, we introduce a new back-end for the FLAME Application programming Interface (API) that computes over sparse matrices stored in the compressed sparse row (CSR) format so that the correctness of the derived algorithm can be translated to the implementation. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The genetic engineering of microbial organisms offers benefits to society through biotechnology applications. Traditionally, the "engineering" of microbes to arrive at organisms with desired behavior has not been engineering in a strict sense. It has, rather, required months (more often years) of trial-and-error type of experiments, with the undertaking being more akin to art than engineering. Enter synthetic biology, a burgeoning area since the turn of the century that aims to put the engineering into genetic engineering. Here, we provide a short commentary on some advancements in this field. By relating these advances to recent progress in our understanding of extracellular electron transfer in bacteria, we also provide a perspective on synthetic biology having the potential to enable the programming of bacteria for electronics engineering-related applications such as biosensors.

In the recent years Deep Learning has attracted a lot of attention due to its success in difficult tasks such as image recognition and computer vision. Most of the success in these tasks is merit of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which allow the automatic construction of features. However, designing such networks is not an easy task, which requires expertise and insight. In this paper we introduce DENSER, a novel representation for the evolution of deep neural networks. In concrete we adapt ideas from Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Grammatical Evolution (GE) to enable the evolution of sequences of layers and their parameters. We test our approach in the well-known image classification CIFAR-10 dataset. The results show that our method: (i) outperforms previous evolutionary approaches to the generations of CNNs;(ii) is able to create CNNs that have state-of-the-art performance while using less prior knowledge (iii) evolves CNNs with novel topologies, unlikely to be designed by hand. For instance, the best performing CNN obtained during evolution has an unexpected structure using six consecutive dense layers. On the CIFAR-10 the best model reports an average error of 5.87% on test data. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

This paper proposes an environmentally committed mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to find the best plan for the electrical distribution systems (EDSs) in a short-term planning horizon. In this regard, the energy delivered by the substation and the total investment cost are minimized while the stochasticity related with the demand and photovoltaic (PV) generation is modeled via external uncertainty indexes. Considering PV generation, switchable and fixed capacitor banks (CBs), voltage regulators (VRs), conductor replacement, as well as operating costs results in a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. However, to obtain the globally optimal solution, this highly nonlinear model, using appropriate linearization techniques, is recast to an MILP model. In order to validate and show the effectiveness of the proposed model, a 42-node system is considered in detail. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe an e-Learning system that can help novices to learn how to develop some workable programs in a short period of time, assess their performance, and automatically grade the students' programs. The system takes advantage of computer and network technologies and combines the concept of flipped classroom to help the instructor and students in their teaching and learning activities. The system can do semi-automatic grading for the students' program and produce some preliminary results. The preliminary study shows that the platform can indeed assess the students' performance and consequently help the students to learn programming languages more effectively and efficiently. © 2017 IEEE.

Research shows that over 50% students who try an introductory course in programming do not complete the course. At Hispanic-serving institutions (HSI) and those with large populations of 1st generation college students, this is particularly problematic. We combined and customized approaches for use in an introductory programming course for Computer science Majors at a large HSI. The approaches included the use of: (1) Collaborative, team-based and paired programming, active learning, in-class exercises, as well as additional external assignments;(2) Active learning classroom environment whereby the physical space enhances and encourages collaborative, small group interactions;and (3) In-class Peer Learning Assistants (undergraduates) that have undergone specialized training to facilitate discussion and interaction with students in an active learning classroom setting. We conducted a study in a programming I for Computer science Majors (CS1) course to test the efficacy of the 3-pronged approach described above. The control group (lecture based) pass rates were found to be 71%, whereas the experimental group (active learning) pass rates were found to be 80%. For those students who passed the class, average grades also increased, with the average grade in the control group at 3.0 and the average grade in the experimental group at 3.30. It is thus concluded that the use of the active learning and the 3-pronged approach described above had a positive impact on course outcomes and student learning. © American Society for engineering Education, 2017.

PLCs are used increasingly more often in industrial applications and beyond. PLCs from different companies involved different programming languages. Some of the PLCs can be programmed in all languages, while others do not. For three types of PLCs was made an application for a traffic light with priority. PLCs usually have a general and a special set of instructions that only some of these are found from a PLC to another. Programs were made with specific instruction set of respectively PLC. The programs were carried out in three languages. For a case study, it makes a comparative analysis between three programming languages.
