In response to the so-called software crisis' of the late 1960s, many approaches were proposed to turn (parts of) software engineering and programming into more systematic disciplines, to turn an art into a science. This paper studies one popular example often used in these proposals, the computation of a list of primes, to discuss some salient features of the proposed programming paradigms. It also looks at the actual implementation in the early 1970s of the prime program on a time-sharing system (MULTICS) and on a complex scientific computer (ILLIAC IV). Confronting theory with practice uncovers what the programming paradigms fail to grasp: the interaction with the user and the interaction with the machine.

This study investigates managerial insights to facilitate the robust construction of a responsive and sustainable supply chain network. The two goals typically contradict each other because a fast, responsive supply chain may consume sizable resources. A fully optimized supply chain, which operates at minimal cost, may not honor the two indicators simultaneously. Through a mathematical programming model assessing the necessary cost of a supply chain, this study argues that such a dilemma can be reconciled by reallocating stocking items across warehouse locations. Instead of designing an ultimate network to optimize responsiveness and eco-efficiency, the model merely serves as a vehicle for estimating the cost of implementing a nominal supply chain. In the process, the interaction between two performance indicators is clarified. The distribution responsiveness and eco-efficiency indicators comprise stock distribution, transportation link diversity, service level, and life cycle assessment. Understanding the relation between these two indicators helps to determine a cost-effective configuration which achieves eco-efficiency without sacrificing responsiveness.

In order to optimize the allocation of logistics resources to realize the sustainable development of logistics enterprises in South Xinjiang Corps, the logistics center location selection problem is studied in this paper. To meet the practical demands of these logistics enterprises, a hierarchical structure model is proposed about the logistics center location selection problem. Based on this analytic hierarchy process (AHP) structure model, a simulation model is proposed, and the problem is solved by MATLAB programming. The result shows that the logistics center in southern Xinjiang corps should be selected in Korla city, the headquarter location of the second corps division. This result in our paper coincides with the practical decision in reality.

Molecular Communication (MC), i.e., the exchange of information through the emission, propagation, and reception of molecules, is a promising paradigm for the interconnection of autonomous nanoscale devices, known as nanomachines. Synthetic biology techniques, and in particular the engineering of biological circuits, are enabling research towards the programming of functions within biological cells, thus paving the way for the realization of biological nanomachines. The design of MC systems built upon biological circuits is particularly interesting since cells naturally employ the MC paradigm in their interactions, and possess many of the elements required to realize this type of communication. This paper focuses on the identification and systems-theoretic modeling of a minimal subset of biological circuit elements necessary to be included in an MC system design where the message-bearing molecules are propagated via free di?usion between two cells. The system-theoretic models are here detailed in terms of transfer functions, from which analytical expressions are derived for the attenuation and the delay experienced by an information signal through the MC system. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the attenuation and delay expressions as functions of realistic biological parameters.
