This paper proposes a flexible and extendable Java application introspection platform, namely Hotspot Insight. Hotspot Insight is built on the official Java Virtual Machine (JVM), viz., OpenJDK's Hot Spot. Compared to existing solutions, Hotspot Insight archives four unique advantages, i.e., transparency, flexibility, scalability and completeness. With Hotspot Insight, more detailed and useful information of the introspected Java application could be achieved with less development efforts. © 2011 IEEE.

Planning for the point pollution sources control around the river bank is complicated with both macro and micro factors. According to these characteristics, a model-centered methodology, based on multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) and water quality simulation, is developed for controlling the multi-pollutants simultaneously, considering the nature of the river's hydrology, the arrangement of pollution sources and pollutant diffusion process. Then, the model-centered methodology is applied in the case study to control the COD and NH4-N of 6 pollution sources around the Minjiang river bank of Yibin section, and to analyze the management level of all pollution sources and the variation of their contribution to Minjiang River. The results show that the order of importance of all pollution sources control is as follows: 1st outfall>2nd outfall>5th outfall>3rd outfall>4th outfall>6th outfall. And the 1st, 2nd and 5th outfalls can be viewed as the most crucial pollution sources in the future controlling. Moreover, with defining the largest emission concentration of COD and NH4-N and the corresponding annual emissions of the pollution sources, the quantitative requirements of controlling the pollution sources were raised, which offer the basis for the total allocation of the emission and the water environmental management of the whole area. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a combination scheduling method with deadheading strategy for an urban subway line which connects residential areas and workplaces during the morning rush hours. The deadheading strategy means to let parts of trains directly return to the departure terminal without stopping along the smaller demand direction, in order to dispatch more trains along the larger demand direction subjected to the given number of electronic multiple units (EMU). The problem is formulated as a nonlinear programming model. The genetic algorithm is therefore adopted to solve the constructed model. Finally, the proposed model and algorithm have been successfully tested with the help of a real case. © 2011 ASCE.

The optimization of traffic flow in a signalized urban road network is influenced not only by roads conditions, but also by traffic design and signal timing of intersections. Traditional traffic assignment models did not consider the traffic design elements in detail, and can not reflect the influence of traffic design on network traffic flow. The traffic flow optimization model was applied on a small urban road network in which all intersections were controlled by traffic signals. The model optimized the green splits and cycle length of traffic signals based on the traffic assignment model with fixed signals, and got the optimization result of road network traffic flow for a traffic design plan. This paper builds the traffic flow optimization model in urban road network with signals, studied the algorithm to solve the problem in an experiment network with VBA programming. The study indicated that the model had good convergence and global optimality, and could get the optimized network traffic flow for a traffic design plan. © 2011 ASCE.

With the rapid development of computer technology, more and more finite element analysis software is applied to the field of structural analysis. However, for ordinary shelf designers, in a short time learn to use finite element analysis software are still some difficulties. Through mapping algorithm of node coordinates and programming using VB6.0 to achieve the second development on SAP84. Traffic collisions represent a major problem on a worldwide basis. Every year, over 1.2 million people die in traffic collisions across the world and between 20 and 50 million are injured or disabled. In most regions of the world this epidemic of road traffic injuries is still increasing. Highway agencies all over the world are paying more and more attentions on highway safety. Highway safety has been taken into account seriously during the project programming and implementation in British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Canada (BCMOTI). This article describes the BCMOTI highway safety practice, which includes general safety analysis procedure to identify the safety problems, the improvement option generation, and economic analysis for improvement options. Historically, collision rates have been used as the basis for safety analysis. Research has shown that there are limitations with this approach due to the non-linear relationship between collision frequency and exposure. Collision prediction modeling is the recommended technique for estimating road safety in the American Association of state Highway and Transpiration Officials (AASHTO) Highway Safety Manual. The BCMOTI developed her own collision prediction models (CPMs) and collision modification factors (CMFs) to be used to assess highway safety improvements on British Columbia highways. It is believed that the CPMs and CMFs have improved the overall safety performance estimate (safety benefits) for road safety analysis and these outputs serve a valuable purpose with respect to option selection, project ranking and programming. © 2011 ASCE.

Using dynamic positioning (DP) ship maintains its position and heading by active thrusters. Several challenges exist with regard to the DP controller design, such as uncertain system model, actuator with saturation hard limitations, state or output (ship position or orientation) constraints. A robust receding horizon dual-mode control method is introduced into the design of DP controller using the property of the invariant ellipsoid. Outside the ellipsoid, the receding horizon control is *** the state enters the ellipsoid, the control is switched to a linear state feedback control, which makes the state stay in the ellipsoid forever and stabilizes the system while satisfying the input, the state and the output constraints. The DP control is obtained by using semi-definite programming (SDP) which can be easily solved by means of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). At last, the simulation study is carried out to verify the feasibility and efficiency of the application of robust receding horizon dual-mode control for dynamic positioning ship. © 2011 ASCE.

The key of the drivers' behaviors are their driving decisions. To reveal the decision-making process, a new model with consideration of the deceleration limitation (DL) was built, based on a cellular automata (CA) model. In the DL model, the driver's decision was divided into three steps: decision-making, action and result. And the acceleration was taken as a decision variable and also two other core factors, i.e. distance between adjacent vehicles and their own velocity, were considered. Simulation results show that the DL model can simulate the interaction between vehicles realistically and describe the phase transition of traffic flow well. Further analyses illustrate that the density's change can cause the critical phase transition in traffic flow. These findings have effectively reproduced some realistic phenomenon and will help reduce the traffic congestion. © 2011 ASCE.

In this paper, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based fuzzy goal programming (FGP) technique to multiobjective optimal planning of electric power generation and dispatch problem in power system operation and planning phases is presented. In the proposed approach, fuel cost, environmental emission and voltage deviation objectives of optimal power flow calculation are fuzzily described. In the solution process, the GA method is used in an iterative manner for satisficing the goal levels on the basis of needs and desires of the power system operation and planning perspective. In the GA based solution search process, the conventional Roulette wheel selection scheme, single-point crossover and bit-by-bit mutation are taken into consideration to reach a satisfactory decision. The developed method has been tested on IEEE 6-generator 30-bus System. © 2011 IEEE.
