Data saturation of satellite navigation systems (already a problem with location based services) will become particularly acute in the emerging area of networked electric vehicles (NEV). Sophisticated energy management and navigation software may solve a technology integration challenge, but it will leave unresolved the usability implications for drivers and fleet operators. These include navigation data specific to commercial electric vehicles;delivery scheduling, routes, times, traffic congestion avoidance, range & charge levels etc. Many are time dependent factors that complicate interaction with a map based navigation system. They also risk augmenting driver stress and distraction induced errors. This Paper has two objectives. Firstly we examine the problem of information saturation of navigation systems. Secondly we undertook a series of user tests to evaluate an alternative NEV navigation system. The DHS solution is a compressed data feed delivering "just in time" multimodal prompts embedded in the map route. The test results demonstrated improved driver comprehension and reduced driver glance away time from road to navigation system.

Demand for security and surveillance systems is getting bigger day after day. This work proposes a method that counts people and detects suspicious attitudes via video sequences of areas with moderate people access. A typical application is the security of warehouses during the night, on weekends or at any time when people access is allowed but no load movement is admissible. Specifically it focuses on detecting when a person passing by the environment carries any object belonging to the background away or leaves any object in the background, while only people movement is allowed in the area. In addition, it estimates the number of people on scene. The method consists of performing four main tasks on video sequences: a) background and foreground separation, b) background estimative dynamic update, c) people location and counting, and d) suspicious attitudes detection. The proposed background and foreground separation and background estimative update algorithms deal with illumination fluctuation and shade effects. People location and counting explores colour information and motion coherence. A prototype implementing the proposed method was built for evaluation purpose. Experiments on simulated and real video sequences are reported showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

These proceedings present the results of the Eleventh international conference on Dependability and Complex systems DepCoS-RELCOMEX which took place in a picturesque Brunw Palace in Poland from 27th June to 1st July, 2016. DepCoS-RELCOMEX is a series of international conferences organized annually by Department of computer Engineering of Wrocaw University of Science and Technology since 2006. The roots of the series go as far back as to the seventies of the previous century the first RELCOMEX conference took place in 1977 and now its main aim is to promote a multi-disciplinary approach to dependability problems in theory and engineering practice of complex systems. Complex systems, nowadays most often computer-based and distributed, are built upon a variety of technical, information, software and human resources. The challenges in their design, analysis and maintenance not only originate from the involved technical and organizational structures but also from the complexity of the information processes that must be efficiently executed in a diverse, often hostile operational environment. Traditional methods of reliability evaluation focused only on technical resources are usually insufficient in this context and more innovative, multidisciplinary methods of dependability analysis must be applied. The diversity of the topics which need to be considered is well illustrated by the selection of the submissions in these proceedings with their subjects ranging from mathematical models and design methodologies through software engineering and data security issues up to practical problems in technical, e.g. transportation, systems.

Algebraic Subspace Clustering (ASC) is a simple and elegant method based on polynomial fitting and differentiation for clustering noiseless data drawn from an arbitrary union of subspaces. In practice, however, ASC is limited to equi-dimensional subspaces because the estimation of the subspace dimension via algebraic methods is sensitive to noise. This paper proposes a new ASC algorithm that can handle noisy data drawn from subspaces of arbitrary dimensions. The key ideas are (1) to construct, at each point, a decreasing sequence of subspaces containing the subspace passing through that point;(2) to use the distances from any other point to each subspace in the sequence to construct a subspace clustering affinity, which is superior to alternative affinities both in theory and in practice. Experiments on the Hopkins 155 dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method with respect to sparse and low rank subspace clustering methods.

Coverability of reset Petri nets and other well-structured transition systems by partial deduction 1

In recent work it has been shown that infinite state model checking can be performed by a combination of partial deduction of logic programs and abstract interpretation. It has also been shown that partial deduction is powerful enough to mimic certain algorithms to decide coverability properties of Petri nets. These algorithms are forward algorithms and hard to scale up to deal with more complicated systems. Recently, it has been proposed to use a backward algorithm scheme instead. This scheme is applicable to so-called well-structured transition systems and was successfully used, e.g., to solve coverability problems for reset Petri nets. In this paper, we discuss how partial deduction can mimic many of these backward algorithms as well. We prove this link in particular for reset Petri nets and Petri nets with transfer and doubling arcs. We thus establish a surprising link between algorithms in Petri net theory and program specialisation, and also shed light on the power of using logic program specialisation for infinite state model checking.

The proposed work focuses on Genetic-Fuzzy approach to identify student's skills. It is an integrated approach of education and technology implementing theory of Multiple Intelligence. The objective is to reduce the system's developmental and maintenance effort and automatically evolve strong rules. The proposed model is a novel evolutionary hybrid approach to measure and classify multiple intelligence in a friendly way. Freeform optical systems include lens or mirror surfaces with shapes that have no axis of revolution in order to reach better performance in off-axis designs such as Head-Mounted Displays (HMD). They have an increased number of design parameters compared to rotationally symmetrical optical systems which makes their optimization more difficult. In this paper we presented results of several studies where various optimization techniques were used to optimize a freeform HMD prism with two mirrors. It was demonstrated that algorithms which performed well on traditional systems were not capable of obtaining high-quality solutions for the system under investigation. This paper presents a new parallel asynchronous memetic algorithm designed for optimizing freeform optical systems. The algorithm incorporates local search techniques into an asynchronous parallel computing procedure thus helping to speed-up the convergence to a high-quality solution. The results of a comparative study, presented in this paper along with the algorithm description, demonstrate that the proposed method is not only capable of obtaining a good solution but is also comparable with high-end commercial optical software packages.

This study compared the usability of two different speech activated automated telephone services with a group of older adults, aged between 50 and 87. All participants completed a series of information search tasks with a standard numbered menu system, and with a specially developed menu system designed around a spatial metaphor. Automated menu systems presented a significant barrier for older adults with only 59% of participants able to complete all search tasks. Task completion improved when using the spatial metaphor-based version of the service. The spatial ability of participants was related to successful task completion with both services. Time taken to complete search tasks correlated with working memory capacity only in the case of the standard service and not the metaphor-based service. The incorporation of spatial metaphor within automated telephone systems may therefore provide an important aid to navigation when developing future services with older adults in mind.
