Urban planners and policy makers often rely on data visualization and spatial data mapping tools to perceive the overall urban trends. The accumulation of historical and real-time urban data from many government and private organizations provides the opportunity for an integrated visual analytic platform. data management and retrieval for geospatial visualization, correlations, and analysis of multiple data dimensions over a map constitute some of the main challenges when dealing with the heterogeneity of urban data from a variety of sources. In this paper, spatiotemporal aggregation strategies and approaches to accelerate the retrieval of spatial data are presented. The methods are tested on visualizing multivariate urban datasets from two cities in Australia that are aggregated from heterogeneous federated urban data providers. The aggregated spatial or temporal features can be visualized as a choropleth heatmap or extrusion on map. Dynamic spatial window query in our visual analytics tool allows extraction of at geometry objects optimized through materialized views from a database. Given the robust and scalable orchestration of geometries retrieval, this enables urban planners to perform interactive and dynamic multidimensional visual exploration over a map. © 2015 ACM.

The research project Germania Sacra provides a comprehensive prosopographical database, that makes structured and comparable data of the Church of the Holy Roman Empire available for further research. The database contains approximately 31,000 records of premodern persons, new data is continuously added. This digital index of persons is supplemented by the "database of Monasteries, Convents and Collegiate Churches of the Old Empire". The access through ecclesiastical institutions offers a broad variety of visualization possibilities for the prosopographical data. Together with the digitized reference books of the Germania Sacra those databases constitute a research portal of clerics and religious institutions, which takes into consideration the enormous importance of the Church for the history of the Holy Roman Empire. In order to make as much information as possible accessible for scholarly use the next steps that will be undertaken are cross-institutional collaboration and integration of scientific data resources of other research projects.

In this article we describe the overall structure of our Virtual Research Environment 'TIC Collaborative', designed for the study of nineteenth and early twentieth century international congresses and organizations related to social and cultural reform issues. The VRE consists of a digital text platform, which includes documents related to the congresses, organizations and their members, and a relational database in which we gather biographical information about people who played a role in this transnational arena. Both elements are geared towards interactive use and 'scholarly crowdsourcing'. In order to demonstrate the potential of our VRE we present one case study in which we use longitudinal data visualisations to develop targeted research questions about congress participation and transfer of knowledge.

Origin-Destination (OD) data has quickly emerged as a popular and fast growing spatiotemporal data type due to widely adoption of GPS, smartphones and location dependent social networks. Several previous works have developed techniques for managing and visualizing large-scale OD data in desktop computing environments. In this study, by leveraging our experiences in Web-GIS and parallel spatial data processing and learning from successful OD data visualization case studies, we have developed a Web-based high-performance visual analytics prototype platform for OD data. Observing that interactive spatial queries typically only involve a limited number of Regions of Interests (ROIs), we propose a simple yet effective technique to aggregate OD records into dynamically defined OD polygons by data parallel scanning OD point locations for cache efficiency and easy parallelization on conventional multi-core hardware for high efficiency and performance. By dynamically integrating with a graph database backend, our prototype platform is capable of visualizing social network analytical results and guide users to further retrieve detailed information of interests. Two experiments are provided to demonstrate the utilization of the proposed techniques, including web frontend functionality and backend efficiency, by using more than 170 million taxi trip records in NYC in 2013 as well several urban infrastructure datasets. Interactive demonstrations are available for the webbased system. © 2015 ACM.

This paper explores the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA) for individual historians, by focusing on the correspondence archives of Rosey E. Pool (1905-1971). Pool's position in her international network of writers and scholars will be examined through her contacts with Hoyt W. Fuller and Robert Hayden over the period 1966 to 1971. The different positions these three actors held towards The First World Festival of Negro Arts (Dakar, April 1966) will be examined. The Dakar Festival was an important and symbolic event in the transnational Négritude movement. Using the theories of 'intersectionality' and 'collective identity,' Pool's network will be analysed by focusing on specific religious and personal features that have influenced the dynamics of her network. A deeper insight of this specific period will be provided by performing a close reading of key letters and by placing the correspondence in its historical context. At the same time, the use of distant reading will be discussed, by dissecting and inspecting a visualisation (made with Gephi) of a database based on Pool's ego-centred network. I will argue that the two approaches of close and distant reading are inseparable in historical research that makes use of Social Network Analysis.

Geological data have to be registered according to country-specific standards and visualized in 3D tools. Both topics are addressed by the tool MO2GEO, which is flexible enough to allow the insertion of common national geological standards (UK, Germany, US). Borehole graphics and cross-section development are available, and the database extended by these data allows for an improved interpolation compared to borehole data only. The visualization of the pseudo-3D volumes shows not only the connected surfaces of geological layers but also virtual cross sections and boreholes at any defined points or lines inside the area. The tool MO2GEO is OpenSource and can therefore be used in schools as well. © The Eurographics Association 2013.

We consider cyber traffic analysis (TA) as a challenge problem for research in graph database systems. TA involves observing and analyzing connections between clients, servers, hosts, and actors within IP networks, over time, to detect suspicious patterns. Towards that end, NetFlow (or more generically, IPFLOW) data are available from routers and servers which summarize coherent groups of IP packets flowing through the network. The ability to cast IPFLOW data as a massive graph and query it interactively is potentially transformative for cybersecurity, but issues of scale and data complexity pose challenges for current technology. In this paper, we outline requirements and opportunities for graph-structured IPFLOW analytics based on our experience with real IPFLOW databases. We describe real use cases from the security domain, cast them as graph patterns, show how to express them in two graph-oriented query languages (SPARQL and datalog), and use these examples to motivate a new class of "hybrid" graph-relational systems. This paper describes the acquisition of the multimodal database used in the 1st Cardiac Motion Analysis Challenge. The database includes magnetic resonance (MR) and 3D ultrasound (3DUS) datasets from a dynamic phantom and 15 datasets from healthy volunteers. The MR acquisition included cine steady state free precession (SSFP), whole-heart turbo field echo (TFE), and 4D tagged MR (tMR) sequences. From the SSFP images, the end diastolic anatomy was extracted using a deformable model of the left ventricle (LV). The LV model was mapped to the tMR coordinates using DICOM information. From the LV model, 12 landmarks were generated (4 walls at 3 ventricular levels). These landmarks were manually tracked in the tMR data over the whole cardiac cycle by two observes using an in-house application with 4D visualization capabilities. Finally, the LV model was registered to the 3DUS coordinates using a point based similarity transform. Four institutions responded to the challenge by providing motion estimates for the data. Preliminary results are presented for one of the volunteer data sets. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The epigenome, such as nucleosome structure and DNA methylation, regulates expression of genes. Searching for evolutionarily conserved sequence motifs essential for controlling the epigenome is a fundamental problem in biology. Collecting massive epigenome data has been becoming increasingly feasible because of the wide-spread availability of next-generation sequencing technology. Thus, there have been growing interests in the genome-wide analysis of the epigenome. There are some issues to be resolved. Care has to be taken to select samples so as to reduce false-positive findings. Processing enormous epigenome data is a computationally intensive task and needs a suite of software techniques such as suffix array, error correction, customizable data visualization, machine learning, and efficient database management. In this talk, I will overview these issues and their solutions, and discuss remaining bioinformatics problems. © 2011 IEEE.
