Providing integrated access to multiple, distributed, heterogeneous databases and other information sources has become one of the leading issues in database research and the industry. One of the most effective approaches is to extract and integrate information of interest from each source in advance and store them in a centralized repository (known as a data warehouse). When a query is posed, it is evaluated directly at the warehouse without accessing the original information sources. One of the techniques that this approach uses to improve the efficiency of query processing is materialized view(s). Essentially, materialized views are used for data warehouses, and various methods for relational databases have been developed. In this paper, we will first discuss an object deputy approach to realize materialized object views for data warehouses which can also incorporate object-oriented databases. A framework has been developed using Smalltalk to prepare data for data warehousing, in which an object deputy model and database connecting tools have been implemented. The object deputy model can provide an easy-to-use way to resolve inconsistency and conflicts while preparing data for data warehousing, as evidenced by our empirical study.

Answering queries using views has been the subject of numerous studies in database and information integration systems. In this work, we consider conjunctive queries with linear equality constraints. Such queries arise naturally in database applications, (heterogeneous) information integration, and in cooperative information systems. We propose a model for query answering in this context and introduce a corresponding rewriting algorithm that uses views to provide answers. We develop a prototype of this model in Java and describe its design and implementation details. This prototype provides a basis for us to further investigate important issues of data modeling and query processing in information integration systems. Copyright 2005 ACM.

This paper describes a set of tools that enables developers to log and analyze the run-time behavior of distributed control systems. A feature of the tools is that they can be applied to distributed systems. The logging tools enable developers to instrument C or C++ programs so that data indicating state changes can be logged automatically in a variety of formats. In particular, run-time data from distributed systems can be synchronized into a single relational database. Tools are also provided for visualizing the logged data. Analysis to verify correct program behavior is done using a new interval logic that is described in this paper. The logic enables system engineers to express temporal specifications for the autonomous control program that are then checked against the logged data. The data logging, visualization, and interval logic analysis tools are all fully implemented. Results are given from a NASA distributed autonomous control system application.

Recent years have witnessed a rapidly growing interest in query processing in sensor and actuator networks. This is mainly due to the increased awareness of query processing as the most appropriate computational paradigm for a wide range of sensor network applications, such as environmental monitoring. In this paper we propose a second database technology, namely active rules, that provides a natural computational paradigm for sensor network applications which require reactive behavior, such as security management and rapid forest fire response. Like query processing, efficient and effective active rule execution mechanisms have to address several technical challenges including language design, data aggregation, data verification, robustness under topology changes, routing, power management and many more. Nonetheless, active rules change the context and the requirements of these issues and hence a new set of solutions is appropriate. To this end, we outline the implications of active rules for sensor networks and contrast these against query processing. We then proceed to discuss work in progress carried out in project Asene that aims to effectively address these issues. Finally, we introduce our architecture for a decentralized event broker based on the publish/subscribe paradigm and our early design of an ECA language for sensor networks.

The design of easy-to-use and informative visual interfaces to digital libraries is an integral part to the advances of digital libraries. A wide range of approaches have been developed from a diverse spectrum of perspectives that focus on users and tasks to be supported, data to be modeled, and the efficiency of algorithms. Information visualization aims to exploit the human visual information processing system, especially with non-spatial data (such as documents and images typically found in digital libraries). Generally, information visualization examines semantic relationships intrinsic to an abstract information space and how they can be spatially navigated and memorized using similar cognitive processes to those that would apply during interactions with the 'real world'. This workshop promotes the convergence of information visualization and digital libraries. It brings together researchers and practitioners in the areas of information visualization, digital libraries, human-computer interaction, library and information science, and computer science to identify the most important issues in the past and the present, and what should be done in the future. Web developers have been concerned with the issues of Web latency and Web data consistency for many years. These issues have become more important in our days since the accurate and imminent dissemination of information is vital to businesses and individuals that rely on the Web. In this paper, we evaluate different run-time management policies against real Web site data. We first define the meaning of data intensive Web sites and categorize them according to their hit patterns. Our research relies on real world Web data collected from various popular Web sites and proxy log files. We propose a Web site run-time management policy that may apply to various real Web site hit patterns and Web data update frequencies.

The use of mobile computers is gaining popularity. The number of users with laptops and notebooks is increasing and this trend is likely to continue in the future where the number of mobile clients will far exceed the number of traditional fixed clients or desktops. Applications running on mobile clients download information by periodically connecting to repositories of data. Mobile clients constitute a new and different kind of workload and exhibit different access patterns than those seen in traditional client server systems. In this paper, we argue with particular emphasis on databases, that the workload presented by mobile clients allows partitioning of a dataset on a server. The partitions are defined by constraints on specific attributes of the data called the hoard attributes. The techniques are general enough to be applied to other non-database applications that access collections of data, including filesystems such as CODA and FICUS. Our primary contribution is a set of simulation results that illustrate the performance of a sample database system with both disconnected and traditional clients. Furthermore, we argue that such partitioning of the server data set simplifies management of other issues, such as consistency management.

Due to the increasing trend towards paperless environments in both commercial and military organizations, there is a growing need for multilevel secure database systems. In a secure database system, access to data is only permitted after proper authentication procedures are carried out. Users are provided access to only that portion of the database which is allowed at their classification level. Several architectures have been proposed to implement multilevel secure (MLS) database systems. In this paper, we discuss some of the important performance issues that need to be taken into account in designing and implementing the MLS database systems.
