Although publications on new media within China's mainland rarely deal with state-society relationship,it is beyond dispute that,among overseas academics,the state- society question is a most central anchor point for an increasing body of literature on the development of new communication technologies in the People's Republic.A classic issue in political science,the examination of how the state influences and interacts with non-state sectors has reached beyond disciplinary boundaries and become a domain of common concern,which yields prominent fruits in the field of China new media studies including volumes by Mueller and Tan(1997),Manuel Fries(2000),David Sheff(2002), Shanthi Kalathil and Taylor Boas(2003).
