More than a decade ago,I joined my mentor in writing a chapter for a volume on media and society(McLeod,Kosicki,&Pan,1991).In that chapter,we set out to dispel some of what we regarded as misunderstandings of empirical research on media effects. In large part,the chapter was written to respond to criticisms leveled against this line of research by critical scholars and cultural studies scholars and to insist on the significance of what has been labeled as“the administrative research”(Gitlin,1978).Our effort can hardly be taken as a success. A clear indication is that the piece was removed from the subsequent editions of the same volume.

This study attempts to attest the liberating potential of the Internet by empirically analyzing the information flow pattern in relation to one of the most popular net activities in global Chinese societies—net *** concerns the issue of how information travels from one net forum to another within the Chinese language Internet,which connects dispersed Chinese net users over the *** remains one of the countries which openly recognizes the validity of information censorship and has installed a sophisticated “virtual curtain”to fend off unwanted *** inquiry focuses on how the Internet has become a quasi-news medium for Chinese users and to what extent information could circulate on the global Chinese Internet despite the filtering in China.

As an individual difference,reactance proneness is a useful and important way of segmenting audience in public health *** Hong Psychological Reactance Scale was developed to measure the individual difference in reactance proneness. Previous studies indicated that the scale has four factors and is multi-dimensional. Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to test the psychometric properties of the *** study also used both message-specific variables and individual difference variables to test the external consistency of the *** from three independent samples(N=188,200,and 233)confirmed the four factors,but provided evidence that the scale is unidimensional at the second *** for persuasive health communication were also discussed.

Drawing on enactment theory,this study examines how organizational hierarchies are created and maintained through communication and how hierarchy-related factors,such as bureaucracy and inequality,affect employee job *** were gathered from two large state-owned enterprises in *** via in-depth interviews and survey. Results indicate that distinctive hierarchies were enacted through verbal and nonverbal behaviors of the employees in Chinese state-owned enterprises and the enactment of this organizational hierarchy was heavily influenced by Chinese cultural *** hierarchy,accepted as taken-for-granted practice,had a positive effect on job satisfaction,hierarchy related factors such as bureaucracy and inequality negatively affected *** suggest that the need to examine the impact of organizational hierarchy in cultural contexts and the need to reduce the level of bureaucracy and inequality to improve job satisfaction.

Repatriate junior faculty had typically been away from China for a considerable number of years before taking a job offer with some university at home. The length of their absence quite limits these individuals' connections with the environment where they started to pursue professorship not long *** on the few months of my being an assistant professor in a business college,I feel that my teaching and research activities are challenged and even hampered by(1)the scarce social links I have with the Chinese business sector and (2) my limited knowledge about the social,economic and cultural evolutions in China since the late 90s. However,I have found that my students' social network provides a valuable resource for me to tap into to shorten my current distance from the Chinese society and make my teaching and research more localized.

This study tested the effect of government concern on the coverage of U.S.-China relations by The New York Times and People's *** examined the relationship between extramedia variable and the news coverage,and the relationship between intramedia variable national interest emphasis in the news coverage and the references to trade and non-trade political *** findings support the proposition that government concern affects the coverage of U.S.-China relations both in The New York Times and People's ***,neither extramedia variables nor intramedia variables were found to be strong predictors of the news content for both *** The New York Times,emphasis on national interest was associated with reference to trade;while in People's Daily,emphasis on national interest was associated with reference to non-trade political issues.

This article explores the relationship between the Chinese Government's new social policy,the Internet and youth *** of the ‘Three Represents Theory’indicates that the Government is moving from a directive,top-down approach to managing social and youth development and towards a more consultative,interactive style using the lnternet as a new medium to access and respond to cultural ruptures in the fabric of Chinese *** article draws on the emerging genre of grunge and shock' literature to illustrate the types of cultural ruptures that raise concern among authorities in relation to the direction of youth *** to the change, the Government has begun to utilize key characteristics of the Internet to efficiently consult and interact with youth by linking into the popularity of this controlled new media technology as a way to access this diverse social grouping and provide immediate information on emerging social,and potentially distablising,*** result is that the Government is potentially more responsive to emerging youth issues relating to structures,values and roles in China's rapidly changing social milieu.

Of all China's economic reforms in the twenty plus years since Mao's death,the development in its telecommunications sector is perhaps the most *** a symbol of administrative elitism and officialdom,the telephone has entered into the majority of middle class *** incessant beep of cellular phones on busting city streets. restaurants and palace gardens is a frequent reminder that China is quickly matching pace with the Westernized world in communications ***,China's modernization efforts in its communication and information industry have been acclaimed as the most outstanding evolutionary scenario taking place in international telecommunications(Ganley & Ganley,1989,p.185).The Chinese themselves take great pride in the double-digit growth they have been enjoying since the early 1980s. Teledensity(number of phones per 100 persons)in China was below 1% prior to 1990. The number had been steadily increasing,however,reaching 13% in 2000(28% in cities). In sheer size,China has the largest telecommunication infrastructure and the largest number of users in the world,with 146 million fixed telephone lines and 350 million telephone *** telephone growth is also rapid;in a few years time, penetration had increased to 9.2% with a total number of 120 million subscribers in mid- 2001.
