Color histograms are a central feature in many image retrieval systems. Indeed they are part of the MPEG-7 standard. But histograms suffer from the "curse of dimensionality " in which the number of bins increases exponentially with the number of dimensions. There is therefore an imperative for methods for simplifying histograms. This paper presents a new method for simplifying histograms based on a cascade of increasing-scale graph morphology filters. The system we choose preserves scale space causality and so preserves the modes of the histogram. The method is quick to compute so is therefore a practically useful feature. We present results using the MPEG-7 Common Color Dataset that show that these new compressed features have a retrieval performance that is equivalent to full histograms.

Performance evaluations in probabilistic information retrieval are often presented as precision-recall or precision-scope graphs avoiding the otherwise dominating effect of the embedding irrelevant fraction. However, precision and recall values as such offer an incomplete overview of the information retrieval system under study: information about system parameters like generality (the embedding of the relevant fraction), random performance, and the effect of varying the scope is missed In this paper two cluster performance graphs are presented In those cases where complete ground truth is available (both cluster size and database size) the cluster precision-recall (Cluster PR) graph and the generality-precision=recall graph are proposed.

The paper describes an imaging system that has been designed specifically for the purpose of recovering egomotion and structure from video. The system consists of six cameras in a network arranged so that they sample different parts of the visual sphere. This geometric configuration has provable advantages compared to small field of view cameras for the estimation of the system's own motion and consequently the estimation of shape models from the individual cameras. The reason is that inherent ambiguities of confusion between translation and rotation disappear. We provide algorithms for the calibration of the system and 3D motion estimation. The calibration is based on a new geometric constraint that relates the images of lines parallel in space to the rotation between the cameras. The 3D motion estimation uses a constraint relating structure directly to image gradients.

The automated detection of humans in computer vision as well as the realistic rendering of people in computer graphics necessitates improved modeling of the human skin color. We describe the acquisition and modeling of skin reflectance data densely sampled over the entire visible spectrum. The data collected through a spectrograph allows us to explain skin color (and its variations) and to discriminate between human skin and dyes designed to mimic human skin. We study the approximation of these data using several sets of basis functions. Our study shows that skin reflectance data can best be approximated by a linear combination of Gaussians or their first derivatives. This result has a significant practical impact on optical acquisition devices: the entire visible spectrum of skin reflectance can now be captured with a few filters of optimally chosen central wavelengths and bandwidth.

We study the problem of aligning two 3D line reconstructions expressed in Plucker line coordinates. We introduce the 6/spl times/6 3D line motion matrix that acts on Plucker coordinates in projective, affine or Euclidean space. We characterize its algebraic properties and its relation to the usual 4/spl times/4 point motion matrix, and propose various methods for estimating 3D motion from line correspondences, based on image-related and 3D cost functions. We assess the quality of the different estimation methods using simulated data and real images.

We derive single view indexing functions for dynamic scenes - where dynamic is defined as a scene consisting of multiply moving points each moving independently with constant velocity. The indexing functions we derive are view independent and form a generalization of the "shape tensors" associated with rigid scenes by introducing a time-varying parameter We derive those indexing functions under full 3D projective, 3D affine, and various reduced configurations. The indexing functions were implemented and tested for matching against objects for which their non-rigid motion is an intrinsic part of their character - human gait recognition and hand gesture identification are the two chosen application examples.

This paper describes a face detection approach via learning local features. The key idea is that local features, being manifested by a collection of pixels in a local region, are learnt from the training set instead of arbitrarily defined. The learning procedure consists of two steps. First, a modified version of NMF (non-negative matrix factorization), namely local NMF (LNMF), is applied to obtain an overcomplete set of local features. Second, a learning algorithm based on AdaBoost is used to select a small number of local features and yields extremely efficient classifiers. Experiments are presented which show that face detection performance is comparable to state-of-the-art face detection systems.

Recognising face with large pose variation is more challenging than that in a fixed view, e.g. frontal-view, due to the severe non-linearity caused by rotation in depth, self-shading and self-occlusion. To address this problem, a multi-view dynamic face model is designed to extract the shape-and-pose-free facial texture patterns from multi-view face images. Kernel Discriminant Analysis is developed to extract the significant non-linear discriminating features which maximise the between-class variance and minimise the within-class variance. By using the kernel technique, this process is equivalent to a Linear Discriminant Analysis in a high-dimensional feature space which can be solved conveniently. The identity surfaces are then constructed from these non-linear discriminating features. Face recognition can be performed dynamically from an image sequence by matching an object trajectory and model trajectories on the identity surfaces.

Machine recognition of hand-printed Japanese characters has been an area of great interest for many years. A major problem of this classification task is the huge number of different characters. Applying standard "state-of-the-art" techniques, such as SVM, to multi-class problems of this kind imposes severe problems of both a conceptual and technical nature: (i) separating one class from all others may be an unnecessarily hard problem; and (ii) solving these subproblems can impose unacceptably high computational costs. In this paper, a new approach to Japanese character recognition is presented that successfully overcomes these shortcomings. It is based on a pairwise coupling procedure for probabilistic two-class kernel classifiers. Experimental results for Hiragana recognition effectively demonstrate that our method attains an excellent level of prediction accuracy while imposing very low computational costs.

In many vision problems (e.g., stereo, motion) multiple structures can occur in the data, in which case several instances of the same model need to be recovered from a single data set. However, once the measurement noise becomes significantly large relative to the separation between the structures, the robust statistical methods commonly used in the vision community tend to fail. In this paper, we show that all these techniques are special cases of the general class of M-estimators with auxiliary scale, and explain their failure in the presence of noisy multiple structures. To be able to cope with data containing multiple structures the techniques innate to vision (Hough and RANSAC) should be combined with the robust methods customary in statistics. The implications of our analysis are illustrated by introducing a simple procedure for 2D multistructured data problematic for all known current techniques.
