A visual speech training aid for persons with hearing impairments has been developed using a Windows-based multimedia computer. Previous papers (Zahorian, S. et al., Int. Conf. on Spoken languageprocessing, 2002; Zahorian and Nossair, Z.B., IEEE Trans. on Speech and Audio processing, vol.7, no.4, p.414-25, 1999; Zimmer, A. et al., ICASSP, vol.6, p.3625-8, 1998; Zahorian and Jagharghi, A., J. Acoust. Soc. Amer., vol.94, no.4, p.1966-82, 1993) have describe the signal processing steps and display options for giving real-time feedback about the quality of pronunciation for 10 steady-state American English monopthong vowels (/aa/, /iy/, /uw/, /ae/, /er/, /ih/, /eh/, /ao/, /ah/, and /uh/). This vowel training aid is thus referred to as a vowel articulation training aid (VATA). We now describe methods to develop a monophone-based hidden Markov model/neural network recognizer such that real time visual feedback can be given about the quality of pronunciation of short words and phrases. Experimental results are reported which indicate a high degree of accuracy for labeling and segmenting the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) database developed for "training" the display.

The World Wide Web has provided the facility of bringing information to the fingertips of its users. Since most of the documents available on the web are machine-readable but not machine-understandable, ensuring the retrieval of relevant information continues to be a difficult task. In the traditional text representation approach, high frequency keywords are used as term representatives of text. However, the main drawbacks in this approach are lack of direct relationship between word frequency and its importance, and the effect of the word ambiguities. Considering these shortcomings of the keyword-based method, this paper presents a phrase-based text representation approach that uses rule-based naturallanguageprocessing (NLP) techniques. Extraction of key-phrases from text documents is based on a process of partial parsing. By making the indexing terms more meaningful through reduction of the ambiguity in words considered in isolation, improvement in retrieval effectiveness is sought to be achieved.

The MiTAP system was developed as an experimental prototype using human language technologies for the monitoring of infectious disease outbreaks. The system provides timely, multi-lingual, global information access to analysts, medical experts and individuals involved in humanitarian assistance and relief work. Each day, thousands of articles from electronic information sources spanning multiple languages are automatically captured, translated, tagged, summarized, and presented to users in a variety of ways. Over the course of the past year and half, MiTAP has become a useful tool for real users to solve real problems. The success of MiTAP is greatly attributed to its user-focused design that accommodates the imperfect component technologies and that allows users to interact with the system in familiar ways. We will discuss the problem, the design process, and the implementation from the perspective of services provided and how these services support system capabilities that satisfy user requirements.

Ego-motion estimation for an agile single camera moving through general, unknown scenes becomes a much more challenging problem when real-time performance is required rather than under the off-line processing conditions under which most successful structure from motion work has been achieved. This task of estimating camera motion from measurements of a continuously expanding set of self-mapped visual features is one of a class of problems known as Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) in the robotics community, and we argue that such real-time mapping research, despite rarely being camera-based, is more relevant here than off-line structure from motion methods due to the more fundamental emphasis placed on propagation of uncertainty. We present a top-down Bayesian framework for single-camera localisation via mapping of a sparse set of natural features using motion modelling and an information-guided active measurement strategy, in particular addressing the difficult issue of real-time feature initialisation via a factored sampling approach. Real-time handling of uncertainty permits robust localisation via the creating and active measurement of a sparse map of landmarks such that regions can be re-visited after periods of neglect and localisation can continue through periods when few features are visible. Results are presented of real-time localisation for a hand-waved camera with very sparse prior scene knowledge and all processing carried out on a desktop PC.
