We present the design and implementation of an intelligent Web representative based on prevalent Internet and Web technologies. The design includes three parts: naturallanguage parser, knowledge representation, and communication between the user and the computer. With an efficient pseudo-naturallanguageprocessing, a database of knowledge stored in XML, and the user communication through Microsoft Agent, the intelligent agent can answer questions effectively.

In naturallanguageprocessing, the semantic class information about a word is an important piece of knowledge. For a thesaurus dictionary, which shows the semantic information between words, the editing work is normally carried out manually, which means that a great number of man-hours is necessary for the editing work. This paper proposes a method of extracting the semantic class information on a word from a set of documents. This information is extracted by using the characteristic that the frequency of abstract words is high while the frequency of concrete words is small. As a result of this experiment, it was confirmed that about 20% of the extracted words should be registered in the thesaurus dictionary.

Fuzzy quantifiers, i.e. operators intended to provide a numerical interpretation of naturallanguage (NL) quantifiers like `almost all', are valuable tools for image processing, in particular to express accumulative (second order) properties of fuzzy image regions. However, approaches to fuzzy quantification will unfold their full potential only if the proposed operators capture the meaning of NL quantifiers. We present an exemplary evaluation of one of the most prominent approaches to fuzzy quantification, Yager's OWA approach, with respect to its suitability to model NL quantification over fuzzy image regions.

HyValue is a hybrid electronic submission system which utilizes techniques from naturallanguageprocessing, neural networks and rule based systems to accept, evaluate and mark work submitted by a student for reading or writing. This paper describes the theory behind the system design and the development of the individual components and their interaction. Issues addressed include the definition of sentence structure, fuzzy rule construction and integration with a knowledge base containing the marking rubrics for reading and writing. An evaluation of the system is provided and conclusions drawn.

We propose a new information retriever on the Web which: automatically classifies collected documents; and retrieves multi-lingual information (e.g., Japanese and/or English). This is attained by the mechanism of ontology processing. We set up a multi-lingual ontology as an index dictionary. The ontology manages the relations of keywords and the weights of keywords for domain categories to classify the documents. The system has the following features: users can use any keywords expressed in their native language to search for the Web documents, even if they contain multi lingual information; and the documents can be classified into specific domain categories by tuning the keyword weights up.

The performance of speech recognition systems degrades when speaker accent is different from that in the training set. Accent-independent or accent-dependent recognition both require collection of more training data. In this paper, we propose a faster accent classification approach using phoneme-class models. We also present our findings in acoustic features sensitive to a Cantonese accent, and possibly other Asian language accents. In addition, we show how we can rapidly transform a native accent pronunciation dictionary to that for accented speech by simply using knowledge of the native language of the foreign speaker. The use of this accent-adapted dictionary reduces recognition error rate by 13.5%, similar to the results obtained from a longer, data-driven process.

In the legal domain, jurisprudence has an important role as a juridical source; its decisions support the application of the Law to a concrete case. The problem is that Brazilian Courts produce an enormous amount of decisions every year, turning these text sources larger every time and forcing juridical professionals to spend more time in the search for a relevant decision. Sophisticated AI techniques are needed to minimize searches time and improves the quality and appropriateness of the retrieved information. This paper describes a case-based approach for the intelligent retrieval of jurisprudencial texts. The approach enables the retrieval of adequate texts with characteristics similar to information supplied by the user in naturallanguage. New documents are automatically included into the knowledge base by extracting relevant information. In order to enable the processing of informal textual knowledge in naturallanguage, a controlled vocabulary and a juridical thesaurus based on common juridical terminology, is integrated into the retrieval and extraction process. The approach is based on sentences to criminal proceedings in the domain of the Brazilian Right.
