The authors outline a knowledge-based approach to the design of a portable naturallanguage interface to database systems. The approach is called KID (knowledge-based Interface to Database systems). To free the user from the need to know about query languages and databases, and to allow the user to access databases in naturallanguage, KID incorporates a knowledge base called the world model (WM), which contains a domain model, linguistic knowledge, and database mapping knowledge. To transport KID to a new domain, the user has only to build a new WM for the domain;the WM is easy to define and understand. KID's processing of the user's query using the WM is transparent enough to allow easy debugging of the WM. Encapsulating all the domain-specific knowledge into the WM makes KID portable. The WM design and KID's knowledge-based processing of a query using the WM are discussed.

A software system that could sort through a flood of electronic data and produce a concise naturallanguage summary that highlights significant events found in the data would provide a valuable service. Recent advances in the field of knowledgeengineering have laid the groundwork for the development of a technique for automatically generating such naturallanguage reports from the data in electronic databases. That technique is referred to as knowledge-based report generation. A prototype system that accepts data from the Dow Jones News Service database and generates naturallanguage stock reports has been designed and implemented. The feasibility of the technique is analyzed in terms of the accuracy, fluency, completeness, extendibility, tailorability, and cost of the reports produced by the prototype system.

This volume contains the papers prepared for the 2nd internationalconference on naturallanguageprocessing, held 2-4 June in Patras, Greece. The conference program features invited talks and submitted papers, c- ering a wide range of NLP areas: text segmentation, morphological analysis, lexical knowledge acquisition and representation, grammar formalism and s- tacticparsing,discourse analysis,languagegeneration,man-machineinteraction, machine translation, word sense disambiguation, and information extraction. The program committee received 71 abstracts, of which unfortunately no more than 50% could be accepted. Every paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers. The fairness of the reviewing process is demonstrated by the broad spread of institutions and countries represented in the accepted papers. So many have contributed to the success of the conference. The primary credit, ofcourse, goes to theauthors andto the invitedspeakers. By theirpapers and their inspired talks they established the quality of the conference. Secondly, thanks should go to the referees and to the program committee members who did a thorough and conscientious job. It was not easy to select the papers to be presented. Last, but not least, my special thanks to the organizing committee for making this conference happen.
