Process-orientation is an important approach for the support and the coordination of planning processes in civilengineering. Process-orientation relies on a comprehensive and consistent process model. The Petri Net theory provides some significant benefits for the application on process modeling, -analysis and -runtime control. This contribution outlines the basic idea of process-orientation and presents the goals of process modeling in civilengineering. Then a Petri Net-based process model for civilengineering processes is presented and the corresponding reference implementation ProMiSE (Process Modeling in Structural engineering) is introduced. ProMiSE is a Java-based software tool for process modeling, -analysis and -control with network communication mechanisms based on the WebService technology.

The engineers of the industrial age created the transportation, water, power and other grids that provide the infrastructure of the civilized world. On the internet a new kind of grids are being set up - ones that are pulling together computing and communication resources to provide infrastructure for the digital economy. civil engineers too can make use of this new paradigm of computing, not only to crunch through complex simulations but to use it as a collaboration platform for their virtual enterprise (VO) that is involved in the design, construction and management of products. This paper introduces the concept of grid computing, identifies the role grids could play in engineering processes, presents a high level architecture for grids based engineering services and tools, reviews it and defines the research and development issues. Improving and supporting the process of design knowledge reuse in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry can lead to corporate competitive advantage. Whereas internal knowledge reuse from one's personal experiences is very effective, external knowledge reuse from an external digital or paper archive often fails. Based on a formalization of the internal reuse process from ethnographic studies, a prototype system, CoMem (Corporate Memory) is presented, which supports the reuse process, i.e., finding and understanding. This paper presents a usability testing framework and methodology and a usability evaluation of CoMem using formal user testing. The key dimensions for the usability testing are the size of the repository and the type of finding task: exploration versus retrieval. The usability evaluation results are presented and discussed.

A cut and fill earthworks management system was developed based on 4D CAD and earned value method. The system is composed of a schedule management system, 4D CAD system, cost estimation system, and earned value management system (EVMS). LandXML was employed as the product model to represent terrain data, and IFC was used to represent the process model. We applied the system to a past actual earthworks project and demonstrated that it could facilitate enhancing the control and management of cost and schedule of construction works as well as incorporating the progress payment method effectively.

The AMTS model explicitly represents individual vehicles, but assigns only macroscopic movement characteristics to them. This paradigm is of particular advantages when used in the simulation-based Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) systems that have been under active developments in the last decade. A hybrid neural network combining the General Regression Neural Network (GRNN), Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) are used to identify and quantify factors affecting construction labour productivity and to predict performance. The paper presents structures of the learning domains of building informatics exemplified with experiences from building management civilengineering and open education in Industrial IT at Aalborg University. The courses cover areas such as;object oriented programming and relational database design, human computer interface, user environment design and usability engineering, computer supported collaborative working, knowledge management, virtual buildings, intelligent buildings, and building systems simulation. PGSL (Probabilistic Global Search Lausanne) is a direct search algorithm that is based on global sampling of the search space using a probability distribution function. PGSL has been applied to tasks such as design, diagnosis and control. In many situations, PGSL outperforms genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. This paper provides a summary of selected engineering applications of PGSL. Examples are timber shear wall design, model identification of structures, leak detection in water networks, control of tensegrity structures and optical measurements. The paper demonstrates the wide range of applicability of PGSL to engineering tasks.
