In the current state-of-the-art in multimedia content analysis (MCA), the fundamental techniques are typically derived from core patternrecognition and computervision algorithms. It is well known that completely automatic patternrecognition and computervision approaches have not been successful in being robust and domain independent so we should not expect more from MCA algorithms. The exception to this would naturally be methods which are human-interactive or not automatic. In this paper, we describe some of the recent work we have done in multimedia content analysis across multiple domains where the fundamental technique is founded in interactive search. Our novel algorithm integrates our previous work from wavelet based salient points and genetic algorithms and shows that the main contribution and improvement is from the user feedback provided by the interactive search

Archaeology is at a point where it can benefit greatly from the application of computervision methods, and in turn provides a large number of new, challenging and interesting conceptual problems and data for computer science. This is true in particular in the study of ceramics - the most abundant and widespread of all archaeological finds. The traditional way of documenting archaeological sherds is to draw the profile line, which is the intersection of a sherd along the axis of symmetry. A profilograph is a mechanical device, which can directly acquire and transfer a profile line by pin-pointing the profile on a sherd to a computer. We developed a fully automated vision system, which is able to compute the profile line out of the acquired 3D model of the fragment. In this paper we want to give a thorough comparison between the traditional manual approach, the profilograph and our system and present an improvement of the robustness of our approach by finding circular rills on the fragments. Practical experiments have been undertaken at the excavation Tel Dor in Israel.

vision-based hand gesture recognition is a popular research topic for human-computer interaction (HCI). Gestures provide a rich and intuitive form of interaction for controlling robots. We have earlier developed a gesture model as a sequence of key frames each bearing information about its duration. These constitute a finite state machine (FSM). In this paper we propose a threshold based FSM by incorporating some additional features in the FSM. These additional features are in terms of different thresholds. These new features greatly enhance the gesture recognition accuracy. We get recognition rate of about 96%, which demonstrate that our proposed threshold FSM is ideal for Human computer Interaction (HCI) platform.

computervision and patternrecognition systems play an important role in our lives by means of automated face detection, face and gesture recognition, and estimation of gender and age. This paper addresses the problem of gender classification using frontal facial images. We have developed gender classifiers with performance superior to existing gender classifiers. We experiment on 500 images (250 females and 250 males) randomly withdrawn from the FERET facial database. Independent component analysis (ICA) is used to represent each image as a feature vector in a low dimensional subspace. Different classifiers are studied in this lower dimensional space. Our experimental results show the superior performance of our approach to the existing gender classifiers. We get a 96% accuracy using support vector machine (SVM) in ICA space.
