In this paper, we propose a method to vectorize comic images including halftone dots. Our method can prevent the jaggy and moire phenomena when the images are enlarged and shrank. The method contains three modules: halftone dots separation, gradation approximation, and vectorization. At the first module, small isolated areas and altered areas by dilation and erosion operations are separated into halftone dots images. At the second module, areas of halftone are approximated by contours and gradation parameters. At the last module, both halftone areas and line drawings are vectorized and approximated by smooth contours. The size of compressed file produced by our method is equal or smaller than JBIG compression. Validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experimental results.

As smart surveillance technology becomes a critical component in security infrastructures, the system architecture assumes a critical importance. This paper considers the example of smart surveillance in an airport environment. We start with a threat model for airports and use this to derive the security requirements. These requirements are used to motivate an open-standards based architecture for surveillance. We discuss the critical aspects of this architecture and its implementation in the IBM S3 smart surveillance system. Demo results from a pilot deployment in Hawthorne, NY are presented.

Although a considerable amount of work has been published on material classification, relatively little of it studies situations with considerable variation within each class. Many experiments use the exact same sample, or different patches from the same image, for training and test sets. Thus, such studies are vulnerable to effectively recognising one particular sample of a material as opposed to the material category. In contrast, this paper places firm emphasis on the capability to generalise to previously unseen instances of materials. We adopt an appearance-based strategy, and conduct experiments on a new database which contains several samples of each of eleven material categories, imaged under a variety of pose, illumination and scale conditions. Together, these sources of intra-class variation provide a stern challenge indeed for recognition. Somewhat surprisingly, the difference in performance between various state-of-the-art texture descriptors proves rather small in this task. On the other hand, we clearly demonstrate that very significant gains can be achieved via different SVM-based classification techniques. Selecting appropriate kernel parameters proves crucial. This motivates a novel recognition scheme based on a decision tree. Each node contains an SVM to split one class from all others with a kernel parameter optimal for that particular node. Hence, each decision is made using a different, optimal, class-specific metric. Experiments show the superiority of this approach over several state-of-the-art classifiers

This paper describes a new method for fuzzy segmentation based on spatial constraints. Taking into account the neighborhood influence two techniques are used. First a new feature is derived from Peano scans to represent a spatial relationship among neighbors. Second we incorporate a regularization term to fuzzy C-means algorithm (FCM). The algorithm is tested on both synthetic and multispectral images. Experimental results are presented and discussed. They show the effectiveness of the method.

A new method for line detection based on chain code detection is proposed. First of all, chain codes are tracked in an edge image. After the curvature estimated, the corners in chain codes can be detected, and chain codes are separated at the corners. Chain codes of line segments are recognized, and only the chain codes, which represent line segments, are kept. Parameters of line segments are estimated according to the chain codes, and the piecewise line segments are linked based on the linking criterions. Experiments with images show that the method is effective for line detection.

In this paper, we develop an efficient technique for fully automatic recovery of accurate 3D face shape from videos captured by a low cost camera. The method is designed to work with a short video containing a face rotating from frontal view to profile view. The whole approach consists of three components. First, automatic initialization is performed in the first frame with approximately frontal face. Then, to handle the case of low quality image captured by low cost camera, the 2D feature matching, head poses and underlying 3D face shape are estimated and refined iteratively in an efficient way based on image sequence segmentation. Finally, to take advantage of the sparse structure of the proposed algorithm, sparse bundle adjustment technique is further employed to speed up the computation. We demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the algorithm using a set of experiments

The use of the curvature extremes of the smoothed contour for a reliable shape comparison suitable for shape retrieving is analysed. The shape contours are smoothed using linear diffusion of the contour. A diffusion scale proportional to the contour dimension is chosen, improving the uniform scaling invariance. The relative positions of the smoothed contours curvature extremes are compared, resulting in a shape similarity measure. This method is compared with the resulting from comparing the maxima of the scale-space maps of the contours' curvature zero-crossing (CSS), used in MPEG-7. It is shown that those maxima always coincide with a curvature extreme at the maximum scale. Retrieving examples using the proposed method, are compared with the results of a CSS implementation. A visual improvement of the retrieving results was found. The results were also compared with a polygonal approximation based method.

A major challenge of automatic speech recognition systems found in many areas of today's society is the ability to overcome natural phoneme conditions that potentially degrade performance. In this study, we discuss the effects of two critical phoneme characteristics, decreased vowel duration and mismatched vowel type, on the performance of automatic stress detection in speech using Teager energy operator features. We determine the scope and magnitude of these effects on stress detection performance and propose an algorithm to compensate for vowel type and duration shortening on stress detection performance using a composite phoneme decision scheme, which results in relative error reductions of 24% and 39% in the non-stress and stress conditions, respectively.

＜正＞computer hardware has high processing speed;however,it is lack of flexibility in dealing with most real world problems[1].Evolvable neuromolecular hardware,motivated from some biological evidence,which integrates inter- and intra-neuronal information processing,is proposed. Evolvability,self-organizing dynamics,and a close structure-function relationship are three biological features captured in this *** QuartusⅡsystem,a tool developed by the Altera *** simulating digital circuits,is used to test this hardware and perform a series of experiments. The hardware is applied to pattern recognition problem *** result shows that the structures and functions of this hardware are closely related that its outputs change accordingly when we gradually modify the structure, implying this hardware embracing an adaptive fitness landscape that facilitates evolutionary learning.

Object shape comparability is a challenging problem in the field of pattern recognition and computer *** method based on the geometric moment invariants is the typical method in these applications. This paper introduces curve structure moment invariants based on the geometric moment invariants from transforming the density in geometric moments into a new *** difference in the shapes is increased by using the curve structure moment ***,this method can be used in object shape *** support our new theory,an algorithm for object shape analysis is designed and experiments based on square transform are conducted. Experiments give an encouraging high recognition rate by using the curve structure moment invariants.
