We present a design technique for realizing given projections as catadioptric sensors. In general, these problems do not have solutions, but approximate solutions may often be found that are visually acceptable. Our approach, which we call the "method of vector fields", reduces the problem to solving a linear system. A given transformation between the image plane object surface is shown to determine a vector field which is normal to the surface in the case where the vector field is a gradient. If the vector field is not a gradient, we present several functional that may be minimized to give approximate solutions.

Given a set of patterns and a similarity measure between them, we would present an optimization framework to approximate a small subset, known as a canonical set, whose members closely resemble the members of the original set. We would present a combinatorial formulation of the canonical set problem in terms of quadratic optimization integer programming, present a relaxation through semidefinite programming, and propose a bounded performance rounding procedure for its approximation solution in polynomial time. Through a set of experiments we would investigate the application of canonical sets for computing a summary of views from a dense set of 2D views computed for a 3D object.

We study the problem of pointwise motion tracking in echocardiographic images. We show that decorrelation between tissue motion and intensity variation is inevitable for certain kinds of tissue motion and decorrelation compensation is an ill-posed inverse problem if the decorrelation is beyond a certain correlation threshold. We compare the performance of different features using simulations and phantom examples. We find a threshold value of correlation coefficients below which the B-Mode signal works better than the radio frequency (RF) signal in the analysis of large deformation. We also demonstrate that the introduction of a quantitative reliability measure helps to improve the robustness of displacement estimation.

Reconstructing 3D scenes with independently moving objects from uncalibrated monocular image sequences still poses serious challenges. One important problem is to find the relative scales between these different reconstructed objects. The perspective reconstruction of a single object can only be known up to a certain scale which results in a one-parameter family of relative scales and trajectories per moving object. The paper formulates this ambiguity and proposes solutions in the vein of "non-accidentalness". Two instantiations of its use are analyzed: planar motion and the 'heading constraint'.

This paper describes a novel algorithm for the efficient synthesis of high-quality virtual views from only two input images. The emphasis is on the recovery of continuity of objects boundaries (figural continuity) with faithful synthesis of transparency effects. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: (i) the split-patch search (SPS) technique is introduced for dense stereo which handles transparency effects by assigning multiple disparities to mixed pixels; (ii) an efficient extension of exemplar-based image synthesis to the case of two-camera stereo is proposed. Furthermore, this paper presents an approximate but effective solution to the challenging problem of layer estimation and compositing in the case of small image patches. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated on a number of stereo image pairs taken from two camera video-conferencing setups, where the quality of the synthesized talking heads is of paramount importance. Moreover the improvement in the quality of image synthesis is quantified by comparing the output of the SPS algorithm with thirteen ground-truth images.

We present new binomial models of open- and closed-set identification recognition performance, giving formulae for identification and false match rates as functions of database size, match rank and operating threshold. We compare these with previously published models and with results from face recognition trials on populations of size 4 10/sup 4/. We note verification to be a special case of open-set identification and relate area under the receiver operating characteristic to closed-set identification. We find the binomial model approximates performance at low false match rates but underestimates identification rates on closed sets. We implicate the binomial iid assumption, but show conditioning and score transformation methods that ameliorate this.

Gait recognition has recently gained significant attention, especially in vision-based automated human identification at a distance in visual surveillance and monitoring applications. Silhouette-based gait recognition is one of the most popular methods for recognising moving shapes. This paper aims to investigate the important features in silhouette-based gait recognition from point of view of statistical analysis. It is shown that the average silhouette includes a static component of gait (head and body) as the most important image part, while dynamic component of gait (swings of legs and arms) is ignored as the least important information. At the same time ignoring dynamic part of gait can result in loss in recognition rate in some cases, and the importance of better motion estimation is underlined.

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a popular feature extraction technique for face recognition. However, it often suffers from the small sample size problem when dealing with the high dimensional face data. Some approaches have been proposed to overcome this problem, but they are often unstable and have to discard some discriminative information. In this paper, a dual-space LDA approach for face recognition is proposed to take full advantage of the discriminative information in the face space. Based on a probabilistic visual model, the eigenvalue spectrum in the null space of within-class scatter matrix is estimated, and discriminant analysis is simultaneously applied in the principal and null subspaces of the within-class scatter matrix. The two sets of discriminative features are then combined for recognition. It outperforms existing LDA approaches.

Edges at multiple scales provide complementary grouping cues for image segmentation. These cues are reliable within different ranges. The larger the scale of an edge, the longer range the grouping cues it designates, and the greater impact it has on the final segmentation. A good segmentation respects grouping cues at each scale. These intuitions are formulated in a graph-theoretic framework where multiscale edges define pairwise pixel affinity at multiple grids, each captured in one graph. A novel criterion called average cuts of normalized affinity is proposed to evaluate a simultaneous segmentation through all these graphs. Its near-global optima can be solved efficiently. With a sparse yet complete characterization of pairwise pixel affinity, this graph-cuts approach leads to a hierarchy of coarse to fine segmentations that naturally take care of textured regions and weak contours.

Researchers in the gait community propose various features, either appearance or model based, which they believe encode certain individual traits. One of the main assumptions made in many gait recognition techniques is constant walking-speed. Even though the gait patterns are repeatable, changes in walking speed can influence the gait patterns themselves. In this work we explore how changes in walking speed affect gait parameters in terms of recognition performance. A speed-varying walking database was collected to allow us to investigate and quantify the impact of speed on gait recognition methodically. We develop a normalization procedure, which maps gait features across speeds, and demonstrate their utility in previously proposed appearance-based gait recognition methods.
