It is well-known that epipolar geometry relating two uncalibrated images is determined by at least seven correspondences. If there are more than seven of them, their positions cannot be arbitrary if they are to be projections of any world points by any two cameras. Less than seven matches have been thought not to be constrained in any way. We show that there is a constraint even on five matches, i.e., that there exist forbidden configurations of five points in two images. The constraint is obtained by requiring orientation consistence points on the wrong side of rays are not allowed. For allowed configurations, we show that epipoles must lie in domains with piecewise-conic boundaries, and how to compute them. We present a concise algorithm deciding whether a configuration is allowed or forbidden.

We present a fast, robust and automatic method for computing central paths through tubular structures for application to virtual endoscopy. The key idea is to utilize a medial surface algorithm, which exploits properties of the average outward flux of the gradient vector field of a Euclidean distance function the boundary of the structure of interest. The algorithm is modified to yield a collection of 3D curves, each of which is locally centered. The approach requires no user interaction, and is virtually parameter free and has low computational complexity. We illustrate the approach on segmented colon and vessel data.

We consider the problem of learning with instances defined over a space of sets of vectors. We derive a new positive definite kernel f(A, B) defined over pairs of matrices A, B based on the concept of principal angles between two linear subspaces. We show that the principal angles can be recovered using only inner-products between pairs of column vectors of the input matrices thereby allowing the original column vectors of A, B to be mapped onto arbitrarily high-dimensional feature spaces. We apply this technique to inference over image sequences applications of face recognition and irregular motion trajectory detection.

This paper addresses the problem of computing visual hulls from image contours. We propose a new hybrid approach, which overcomes the precision-complexity trade-off inherent to voxel based approaches by taking advantage of surface based approaches. To this aim, we introduce a space discretization, which does not rely on a regular grid where most cells are ineffective, but rather on an irregular grid where sample points lie on the surface of the visual hull. Such a grid is composed of tetrahedral cells obtained by applying a Delaunay triangulation on the sample points. These cells are carved afterward according to image silhouette information. The proposed approach keeps the robustness of volumetric approaches while drastically improving their precision and reducing their time and space complexities. It thus allows modeling of objects with complex geometry, and it also makes real time feasible for precise models. Preliminary results with synthetic and real data are presented.

Explicit surfaces, such as triangulations or wireframe models, have been extensively used to represent the deformable 3D models that are used to fit 3D point and 2D silhouette data. The resulting approaches, however, suffer from the fact that fitting typically involves finding the facets that are closest to the 3D data points or most likely to be silhouette facets. This requires searching, which is slow, and dealing with the non-differentiability of the distance function. By contrast, implicit surface representations allow fitting without search, since one can simply evaluate a differentiable field function at every data point. However, implicit representations are not necessarily the most intuitive ones and users, such as graphics designers, tend to prefer explicit models.

We present a method for performing data association that handles complex motion models while increasing the robustness of tracking and being suitable for real-time applications. Instead of using motion model in standard recursive fashion, we robustly fit it over multiple frames simultaneously. This allows us to naturally handle arbitrarily complex motion models, to automate the initialization and to deal with occlusion and false alarms. This is effective even if the motion model is not entirely accurate and if there are frequent false-negatives and false-positives. Our algorithm is easy to implement and we show its performances on two real examples of complex motion tracking.

We present a method for extracting dense features from stereo and motion sequences. Our dense feature is defined symmetrically with respect to both images, and it is extracted during the correspondence process, not in a separate preprocessing step. For dense feature extraction we use the graph cuts algorithm, recently shown to be a powerful optimization tool for vision. Our algorithm produces semi-dense answer, with very accurate results in areas where features are detected, and no matches in featureless regions. Unlike sparse feature based algorithms, we are able to extract accurate correspondences in some untextured regions, provided that there are texture cues on the boundary. Our algorithm is robust and does not require parameter tuning.

As a global feature of the fingerprint, the orientation field is very important to an automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS). Establishing an accurate and precise model for the orientation field will not only improve the performance of orientation estimation, but will also make it feasible to apply orientation information into the matching process. Such a novel model for the orientation field for a fingerprint is proposed. We use a polynomial model to approximate the orientation field globally and a point-charge model at each singular point to improve the approximation locally. These two models are combined together by a weight function. Experimental results are provided to illustrate that this combination model is more accurate and robust to noise compared with previous works. Its applications are also discussed.

In this paper, we address the stereo matching problem in the presence of reflections and translucency, where image formation can be modeled as the additive superposition of layers at different depth. The presence of such effects violates the Lambertian assumption underlying traditional stereo vision algorithms, making it impossible to recover component depths using direct color matching based methods. We develop several techniques to estimate both depths and colors of the component layers. Depth hypotheses are enumerated in pairs, one from each layer, in a nested plane sweep. For each pair of depth hypotheses, we compute a component-color-independent matching error per pixel, using a spatial-temporal differencing technique. We then use graph cut optimization to solve for the depths of both layers. This is followed by an iterative color update algorithm whose convergence is proven in our paper. We show convincing results of depth and color estimates for both synthetic and real image sequences.

S-AdaBoost is a new variant of AdaBoost and is more effective than the conventional AdaBoost in handling outliers in pattern detection and classification in real world complex environment. Utilizing the divide and conquer principle, S-AdaBoost divides the input space into a few sub-spaces and uses dedicated classifiers to classify patterns in the sub-spaces. The final classification result is the combination of the outputs of the dedicated classifiers. S-AdaBoost system is made up of an AdaBoost divider, an AdaBoost classifier, a dedicated classifier for outliers, and a non-linear combiner. In addition to presenting face detection test results in a complex airport environment, we have also conducted experiments on a number of benchmark databases to test the algorithm. The experiment results clearly show S-AdaBoost's effectiveness in pattern detection and classification.
