While computervision systems often assume simple illumination models, real-world illumination is highly complex, consisting of reflected light from every direction as well as distributed and localized primary light sources. One can capture the illumination incident at a point in the real world from every direction photographically using a spherical illumination map. This paper illustrates, through analysis of photographically-acquired, high dynamic range. illumination maps, that real-world illumination shares many of the statistical properties of natural images. In particular, the marginal and joint wavelet coefficient distributions, directional derivative distributions, and harmonic spectra of illumination maps resemble those documented in the natural image statistics literature. However, illumination maps differ from standard photographs in that illumination maps are statistically non-stationary and may contain localized light sources that dominate their power spectra. Our work provides a foundation for statistical models of real-world illumination that may facilitate robust estimation of shape, reflectance, and illumination from images.

We address the problem of finding point correspondences in images by way of an approach to template matching that is robust under affine distortions. This is achieved by applying "geometric blur" to both the template and the image, resulting in a fall-off in similarity that is close to linear in the norm of the distortion between the template and the image. A natural sequel to edge detection is the interpretation of edges. This interpretation can provide useful information to various computervision processes, including recognition, reconstruction, and tracking. In this paper we consider the problem of identifying occlusion edges in a single image. We examine the appearance of occlusion edges under variable illumination, both analytically and empirically, and find that the pattern of shading in the neighborhood of occlusion edges is a stable feature. Finally, we derive a filter for detecting occlusion and present the results of its application.

In this paper, a new framework for evaluating a variety of computervision systems and components is introduced. This framework is particularly well suited for domains such as classification or recognition systems, where blind application of the i.i.d. assumption would reduce an evaluation's accuracy, such as with classification or recognition systems. With few exceptions, most previous work on vision system evaluation does not include confidence intervals, since they are difficult to calculate, and are often coupled with strict requirements. We show how a set of previously overlooked replicate statistics tools can be used to obtain tighter confidence intervals of evaluation estimates while simultaneously reducing the amount of data and computation required to reach such sound evaluatory conclusions. In the included application of the new methodology, the well-known FERET face recognition system evaluation is extended to incorporate standard errors and confidence intervals.

The paper explores a view-based approach to recognize free-form objects in range images. We are using a set of local features that are easy to calculate and robust to partial occlusions. By combining those features in a multidimensional histogram, we can obtain highly discriminant classifiers without the need for segmentation. recognition is performed using either histogram matching or a probabilistic recognition algorithm. We compare the performance of both methods in the presence of occlusions and test the system on a database of almost 2000 full-sphere views of 30 free-form objects. The system achieves a recognition accuracy above 93% on ideal images, and of 89% with 20% occlusion.
