We present a surface texture and microstructure extraction system to provide added realism in visualization and virtual reality applications. The system uses multiple images, 3-D models and camera information, in addition to knowledge about man-made structures, to cope with problems such as perspective distortion, data deficiency, and corruption caused by shadows and occlusions. Combined with the Ascender site modeling system and scene rendering algorithms, the system is typically useful for urban site model refinement and visualization.

Segmentation of ultrasound images is often a very challenging task due to speckle noise that contaminates the image. It is well known that speckle noise exhibits an asymmetric distribution as well as significant spatial correlation. Since these attributes can be difficult to model, many previous ultrasound segmentation methods oversimplify the problem by assuming that the noise is white and/or Gaussian, resulting in generic approaches that are actually more suitable to MR and X-ray segmentation than ultrasound. Unlike these methods, in this paper we present an ultrasound-specific segmentation approach that first decorrelates the image, and then performs segmentation on the whitened result using statistical region-based active contours. In particular, we design a gradient ascent flow that evolves the active contours to maximize a log likelihood functional based on the Fisher-Tippett distribution. We present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Segmentation involves separating an object from the background. In this work, we propose a novel segmentation method combining image information with prior shape knowledge, within the level-set framework. Following the work of Leventon et al., we revisit the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to introduce prior knowledge about shapes in a more robust manner. To this end, we utilize Kernel PCA and show that this method of learning shapes outperforms linear PCA, by allowing only shapes that are close enough to the training data. In the proposed segmentation algorithm, shape knowledge and image information are encoded into two energy functionals entirely described in terms of shapes. This consistent description allows to fully take advantage of the Kernel PCA methodology and leads to promising segmentation results. In particular, our shape-driven segmentation technique allows for the simultaneous encoding of multiple types of shapes, and offers a convincing level of robustness with respect to noise, clutter, partial occlusions, or smearing.

Semantic scene classification based only on low-level vision cues has had limited success on unconstrained image sets. On the other hand, camera metadata related to capture conditions provides cues independent of the captured scene content that can be used to improve classification performance. We consider two problems: indoor-outdoor classification and sunset detection. Analysis of camera metadata statistics for images of each class revealed that metadata fields, such as exposure time, flash fired, and subject distance, is most discriminative for both indoor-outdoor and sunset classification. A Bayesian network is employed to fuse content-based and metadata cues in the probability domain and degrades gracefully, even when specific metadata inputs are missing (a practical concern). Finally, we provide extensive experimental results on the two problems, using content-based and metadata cues to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed integrated scene classification scheme.

Helmholtz stereopsis guarantees unbiasedness by BRDF of the search for inter-image correspondences. In a practical setup, calibrated pixel sensitivity and corrected light anisotropy are required for the method to work well. In this paper a simple method for joint light-camera radiometric calibration is proposed. Such calibration is shown to be an ill-posed numerical problem. In the worst case of a single image pair, it can be regularized along epipolar lines only. The calibration problem becomes regularizable everywhere in the case of more pairs and cameras in a general position. A general, simple and fast calibration procedure is proposed that includes a regularizer for the single-pair case. It is shown in a ground-truth experiment that the accuracy of reconstructed surface normals improves by an order of magnitude after radiometric calibration.

Several parallel algorithms and parallel architectures have been developed for partitional clustering. Hierarchical clustering algorithms are also widely used in exploratory pattern analysis and unsupervised learning. The author proposes parallel algorithms on single-instruction/multiple-data (SIMD) machines for hierarchical clustering, which require intensive computation and large memory storage. The machine model includes a parallel memory system and an alignment network, to facilitate parallel access of both pattern matrix and proximity matrix. Since clustering algorithms tend to generate clusters even when applied to random data, clustering-tendency and cluster-validity studies are usually performed. The author proposes a parallel algorithm to compute one type of cluster validity measure global fit of hierarchy for quantitative data. For a problem with N patterns, considering validity study as well as clustering, the number of memory accesses is reduced from O(/sup 3/) on a sequential machine to O(N/sup 2/) on a SIMD machine with N processing elements (PEs). More general algorithms for different numbers of PEs are also given.< >

A simple local smoothing filter for curves or surfaces, combining the advantages of Gaussian smoothing and Fourier curve description, is defined. Unlike Gaussian filters, the filter described has no shrinkage problem. Repeated application of the filter does not yield a curve or surface smaller than the original, but simply reproduces the approximate result that would have been obtained by a single application at the largest scale. Unlike Fourier description, the filter is local in space. The wavelet transform of Y. Meyer (1989) is shown to have these properties.< >

A novel method for character recognition targeted at complex annotations found in engineering documents is presented. A feasibility study is described in which characters extracted from engineering drawings were recognized without error from a class of 36 distinct alphanumeric patterns by a neural network classifier trained with multiscale representations. An incremental strategy is presented for resolution which relies upon the continuity between hierarchical levels of a novel multiscale decomposition. The authors observed a 16-fold reduction in the amount of information needed to represent each character for recognition. These results suggest high reliability at a reduced cost of representation.< >

This paper proposes a new framework for image segmentation based on the integration of MRFs and deformable models using graphical models. We first construct a graphical model to represent the relationship of the observed image pixels, the true region labels and the underlying object contour. We then formulate the problem of image segmentation as the one of joint regioncontour inference and learning in the graphical model. The graphical model representation allows us to use an approximate structured variational inference technique to solve this otherwise intractable joint inference problem. Using this technique, the MAP solution to the original model is obtained by finding the MAP solutions of two simpler models, an extended MRF model and a probabilistic deformable model, iteratively and incrementally. In the extended MRF model, the true region labels are estimated using the BP algorithm in a band area around the estimated contour from the probabilistic deformable model, and the result in turn guides the probabilistic deformable model to an improved estimation of the contour. Experimental results show that our new hybrid method outperforms both the MRF-based and the deformable model-based methods.

The elastic properties of real materials provide constraint on the types of non-rigid motion that can occur, and thus allow overconstrained estimates of 3-D non-rigid motion from optical flow data. It is shown that by modeling and simulating the physics of non-rigid motion it is possible to obtain good estimates of both object shape and velocity. Examples using grey-scale and X-ray imagery are presented, including an example of tracking a complex articulated figure.< >
