Face recognition is one of the most popular research problems on various platforms. New research issues arise when it comes to resource constrained devices, such as smart glasses, due to the overwhelming computation and energy requirements of the accurate face recognition methods. In this paper, we propose a robust and efficient sensor-assisted face recognition system on smart glasses by exploring the power of multimodal sensors including the camera and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. The system is based on a novel face recognition algorithm, namely Multi-view Sparse Representation Classification (MVSRC), by exploiting the prolific information among multi-view face images. To improve the efficiency of MVSRC on smart glasses, we propose a novel sampling optimization strategy using the less expensive inertial sensors. Our evaluations on public and private datasets show that the proposed method is up to 10% more accurate than the state-of-the-art multi-view face recognition methods while its computation cost is in the same order as an efficient benchmark method (e.g., Eigenfaces). Finally, extensive real-world experiments show that our proposed system improves recognition accuracy by up to 15% while achieving the same level of system overhead compared to the existing face recognition system (OpenCV algorithms) on smart glasses.

A wireless sensor and actor network (WSAN) refers to a heterogeneous network primarily composed of sensor and actor nodes. A sensor is the part of the wireless network to sense the event to be occurred in the network. While actor is the entity that performs the networking related functionalities like receiving, transmitting and processing the data. The idea of mobile actor is the new concept in the WSANs research, which helps to take the most efficient action and provides energy and time efficient data collection. Two intelligent models were introduced previously, the static mobility model which uses the cluster information of a sparsely connected networks and another is dynamic mobility model designed on the basis of statistical model for the fixed duration events. Therefore, transmission of event detection information to the actors is one of the major concerns of WSANs. So, the Coordination and Communication between the actors must be managed properly. This paper addresses the actor-actor coordination for the timely responses to the events reported by the sensors in sparsely connected network of WSAN. Furthermore, this paper provides an event tracking algorithm to target the maximum tracked events.

Building environment plays an important role in ensuring a healthy and productive environment for indoor occupants. However, with the increasing demand for comfortable thermal environment and the call for sustainable building operation, achieving a balance between energy consumption and user's thermal preference is challenging. From the informatics perspective, previous studies mainly focused on intelligent building system and occupants activity analysis, while the research on knowledge discovery from building information for optimized building operation is less emphasized. In this paper, we propose a framework for information processing and knowledge discovery for sustainable building environment. Using ubiquitous wireless sensor networks, we showcase how we can feasibly collect and analyze sensory data for the benefit of building environmental assessment and building system control. A case study involving indoor environmental monitoring at two university offices is presented to showcase our approach. We then conclude our work with some discussion on future works.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is opening new horizons in systems intelligence, where physical objects (embedded with sensory, identification and networking capabilities) can interact with other objects through the global infrastructure of wireless/wired Internet. These systems can be monitored and controlled by filtering and processing collected data. Such intelligent design will naturally result is efficient and cost effective systems. Several architectures are being built to implement IoT from two different perspectives. The first, also known as sensor-oriented, is based on large-scale sensors deployment targeting the collection of accurate sensory data. The second architecture, also known as service-oriented, targets the association of unique identifiers with specific services. In such architecture, the service is invoked upon receiving the unique identifier from a specific ID collecting node considering the context in which it was collected. The rise of ad hoc sensors, and new manifestations of sensing systems within the Internet of Things resulted in a tide of sensed data that is potentially drowning our communication resources. In this talk I overview the evolution of sensing systems as they contributed to Big Data, and outline the rising challenges in both communicating and understanding this data. I argue that a solution lies not in sensing systems alone, but in the expedited funneling and processing of data as we attempt to prune the unnecessary, and make sense of the valuable. The quest for energy efficiency that dominated sensor networks for so long, is now matched with a more pressing demand for ubiquity and real-time latency.

Smart Grid (SG) can be defined as a modern electric power grid infrastructure for improved efficiency, reliability and safety, with smooth integration of renewable and alternative energy sources, through automated control and modern communications technologies. The increased need for more effective control on electrical power systems has led to the development and the increased research interest on SG. The construction of SG involves the positive transformation of traditional electricity networks, with one-way power flow, to a system with a new technology, by adding intelligent sensors, distributed generation and storage system, back-end information systems, smart meters and communications networks, to permit two-way power flow with communication and control. All this information should be obtained from the network. So, the development and implementation of intelligent Electronic Device (IED) improves the efficiency, reliability and security of the electric power system. This paper presents the development of an IED, based on TivaC platform for Smart Grid applications, with high capacity processing, communication features, portability/versatility, low cost, easy integration (interoperability) and maintenance. For the communication the proposed IED uses the Hybrid Network Architecture (HNA) concept and open source programming.

A key task in Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to deliver specific information about a spatial phenomenon of interest. However, in WSNs the operating conditions and/or user requirements are often desired to be evolvable, whether driven by changes of the monitored parameters or WSN properties. To this end, few sensor nodes sample the phenomenon and transmit the acquired samples, typically multihop, to the application through a gateway called sink. Accurately representing the physical phenomenon and reliably, timely delivering the user required information comes at the cost of higher energy as additional messages are required. This work proposes a tunable co-design for network optimization to avoid under or over provision of information and interaction of the attributes and their effects on each other. We validate the approach viability through analytical modeling, simulations for a range of requirements.

Entity authentication is a crucial security objective since it enables network nodes to verify the identity of each other. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are composed of a large number of possibly mobile nodes, which are limited in computational, storage and energy resources. These characteristics pose a challenge to entity authentication protocols and security in general. We propose an authentication protocol whose execution is integrated within routing. This is in contrast to currently proposed protocols, in which a node tries to authenticate itself to other nodes without an explicit tie to the underlying routing protocol. In our protocol, nodes discover shared keys, authenticate themselves to each other and build routing paths all in a synergistic way.

Maintaining data temporal consistency in a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) has attracted the attention of many researchers. Nowadays, there are many applications based on WSN which require consistent and valid measures to reflect the current state of the environment being monitored, or to quickly respond to some critical situations. In this paper, we propose a new query processing mechanism, giving each node the possibility to control the temporal validity of data in order to reduce the amount of invalid data delivered by WSN. We also provide a new query model, by introducing new SQL clauses, that allows the user setting the data validity interval and assigning a deadline to each query. Finally, we discuss the performances of our query processing approach and its capacity to maintain the data temporal consistency through two scenarios. The first scenario consists of injecting a single query in the network, then receiving periodic responses from sensors, during a period set by the user. In the second scenario, the user sends periodic queries to sensors according to an epoch, thereafter, it waits for query responses. We concluded by discussing the ability of network to maintain the data temporal consistency, based on the average of query responses time and the amount of valid data transmitted across the network.
