Symmetry is a pervasive phenomenon presenting itself in all forms and scales in natural and manmade environments. Its detection plays an essential role at all levels of human as well as machine perception. The recent resurging interest in computational symmetry for computer vision and computer graphics applications has motivated us to conduct a US NSF funded symmetry detection algorithm competition as a workshop affiliated with the computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) conference, 2013. This competition sets a more complete benchmark for computer vision symmetry detection algorithms. In this report we explain the evaluation metric and the automatic execution of the evaluation workflow. We also present and analyze the algorithms submitted, and show their results on three test sets of real world images depicting reflection, rotation and translation symmetries respectively. This competition establishes a performance baseline for future work on symmetry detection.

Recovering high-dimensional spectral images taken with spectrally low-dimensional camera systems, in the extreme case RGB-images, has been of great interest for a variety of applications. An accurate spectral reconstruction is typically required to either achieve a better color accuracy or to improve object recognition/classification tasks. Almost all published work to date aims at performing a mapping from individual camera signals towards the corresponding spectrum. However, it might be beneficial to consider not only single pixels, but also contextual information. Here, we propose a convolutional neural network architecture that learns a mapping from RGB- to spectral images. We trained the network on the largest hyper-spectral data set available to date [;'I and analyzed the influence of different error metrics as loss functions. An objective evaluation of the performance in comparison to state of the art spectral reconstruction techniques is given by participating in the NTIRE 2018 challenge on spectral reconstruction [1].

Neural network designers have reached progressive accuracy by increasing models depth, introducing new layer types and discovering new combinations of layers. A common element in many architectures is the distribution of the number of filters in each layer. Neural network models keep a pattern design of increasing filters in deeper layers such as those in LeNet, VGG, ResNet, MobileNet and even in automatic discovered architectures such as NASNet. It remains unknown if this pyramidal distribution of filters is the best for different tasks and constrains. In this work we present a series of modifications in the distribution of filters in three popular neural network models and their effects in accuracy and resource consumption. Results show that by applying this approach, some models improve up to 8.9% in accuracy showing reductions in parameters up to 54%.

Camera traps are increasingly being deployed by ecologists and citizen-scientists as a cost-effective way of obtaining large amounts of animal images in the wild. In order to analyze this data, the images are labeled manually by ecologists, where they identify species of animals and more fine-grained details, such as animal sex or age, or even individual animal identities. However, with the number of camera trap images quickly outgrowing the capacity of the labelers, ecologists are unable to keep up with the wealth of data they are obtaining. Using computer vision, we can automatically generate labels for new camera trap images at the rate that they are being obtained, allowing ecologists to uncover ecological and biological information at a scale previously not possible. In this paper, we explore computer vision approaches for species identification in camera trap images and for individual jaguar identification, both of which show promising results. We make this novel dataset publicly available for future research directions and further exploration.

We present a semantic segmentation algorithm for RGB remote sensing images. Our method is based on the Dilated Stacked U-Nets architecture. This state-of-the-art method has been shown to have good performance in other applications. We perform additional post-processing by blending image tiles and degridding the result. Our method gives competitive results on the DeepGlobe dataset.

We address the task of articulated pose estimation from video sequences. We consider an interactive setting where the initial pose is annotated in the first frame. Our system synthesizes a large number of hypothetical scenes with different poses and camera positions by applying geometric deformations to the first frame. We use these synthetic images to generate a custom labeled training set for the video in question. This training data is then used to learn a regressor (for future frames) that predicts joint locations from image data. Notably, our training set is so accurate that nearest-neighbor (NN) matching on low-resolution pixel features works well. As such, we name our underlying representation "tiny synthetic videos". We present quantitative results the Friends benchmark dataset that suggests our simple approach matches or exceed state-of-the-art.

We present WiCV 2018 - Women in computer vision Workshop to increase the visibility and inclusion of women researchers in computer vision field, organized in conjunction with CVPR 2018. computer vision and machine learning have made incredible progress over the past years, yet the number of female researchers is still low both in academia and industry. WiCV is organized to raise visibility of female researchers, to increase the collaboration, and to provide mentorship and give opportunities to female-identifying junior researchers in the field. In its fourth year, we are proud to present the changes and improvements over the past years, summary of statistics for presenters and attendees, followed by expectations from future generations.

With one in four individuals afflicted with malnutrition, computer vision may provide a way of introducing a new level of automation in the nutrition field to reliably monitor food and nutrient intake. In this study, we present a novel approach to modeling the link between color and vitamin A content using transmittance imaging of a pureed foods dilution series in a computer vision powered nutrient sensing system via a fine-tuned deep autoencoder network, which in this case was trained to predict the relative concentration of sweet potato purees. Experimental results show the deep autoencoder network can achieve an accuracy of 80% across beginner (6 month) and intermediate (8 month) commercially prepared pureed sweet potato samples. Prediction errors may be explained by fundamental differences in optical properties which are further discussed.

While makeup virtual-try-on is now widespread, parametrizing a computer graphics rendering engine for synthesizing images of a given cosmetics product remains a challenging task. In this paper, we introduce an inverse computer graphics method for automatic makeup synthesis from a reference image, by learning a model that maps an example portrait image with makeup to the space of rendering parameters. This method can be used by artists to automatically create realistic virtual cosmetics image samples, or by consumers, to virtually try-on a makeup extracted from their favorite reference image.

The semantic segmentation of agricultural aerial images is very important for the recognition and analysis of farmland anomaly patterns, such as drydown, endrow, nutrient deficiency, etc. Methods for general semantic segmentation such as Fully Convolutional Networks can extract rich semantic features, but are difficult to exploit the long-range information. Recently, vision Transformer architectures have made outstanding performances in image segmentation tasks, but transformer-based models have not been fully explored in the field of ***, we propose a novel architecture called Agricultural Aerial Transformer (AAFormer) to solve the semantic segmentation of aerial farmland images. We adopt Mix Transformer (MiT) in the encoder stage to enhance the ability of field anomaly pattern recognition and leverage the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) module in the decoder stage to improve the effectiveness of key channels. The boundary maps of farmland are introduced into the decoder. Evaluated on the Agriculture-vision validation set, the mIoU of our proposed model reaches 45.44%.
