The classification of human gene sequences into exons and introns is an important but difficult problem. We study the discriminative power of various statistical features (22 in total) in term of their mutual information (MI). By performing correlation analysis, we are able to identify a set of features that has high MI value while at the same time is complementary in their information content. Using the set of features, which consists of the three SZ features, the AM feature, and the first stop codon feature, we are able to achieve classification accuracy as high as 92%.

Various facial region biometrics have been used extensively in the areas of recognition and authentication. However, some regions of the face provide more information than is currently being fully utilized in these specific capacities. Biometrics associated exclusively with the eye region hold a key to identifying and classifying particular affective and cognitive states. This paper focuses on 1) methods for identifying and deriving the appropriate biometric data inherent to the eye region that is most useful in specific HCI scenarios and, 2) outlining a framework for classification of these biometric data into affective and cognitive states relative to a particular HCI context.

We present a probabilistic reliable-inference framework to address the issue of rapid-and-reliable detection of human actions. The approach determines the shortest video exposure needed for low-latency recognition by sequentially evaluating a series of posterior class ratios to find the earliest reliable decision point. Results are presented for a set of people walking, running, and standing at different styles and multiple viewpoints, and compared to an alternative ML approach.

We present an adaptive three-mode PCA framework for recognizing gender from walking movements. Prototype female and male walkers are initially decomposed into a sub-space of their three-mode components (posture, time, gender). We then assign an importance weight to each motion trajectory in the sub-space and have the model automatically learn the weight values (key features) from labeled training data. We present experiments of recognizing physical (actual) and perceived (from perceptual experiments) gender for 40 walkers. The model demonstrates greater than 90% recognition for both contexts and shows greater flexibility than standard PCA.
