The restoration of images is an important and widely studied problem in computer vision and image processing. Various image filtering strategies have been effective, but invariably make strong assumptions about the properties of the signal and/or degradation. Therefore, these methods typically lack the generality to be easily applied to new applications or diverse image collections. This paper describes a novel unsupervised, information-theoretic, adaptive filter (UINTA) that improves the predictability of pixel intensities from their neighborhoods by decreasing the joint entropy between them. Thus UINTA automatically discovers the statistical properties of the signal and can thereby restore a wide spectrum of images and applications. This paper describes the formulation required to minimize the joint entropy measure, presents several important practical considerations in estimating image-region statistics, and then presents results on both real and synthetic data.

In many multitarget tracking applications in computer vision, a detection algorithm provides locations of potential targets. Subsequently, the measurements are associated with previously estimated target trajectories in a data association step. The output of the detector is often imperfect and the detection data may include multiple, split measurements from a single target or a single merged measurement from several targets. To address this problem, we introduce a multiple hypothesis tracker for interacting targets that generate split and merged measurements. The tracker is based on an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based auxiliary variable particle filter. The particle filter is Rao-Blackwellized such that the continuous target state parameters are estimated analytically, and an MCMC sampler generates samples from the large discrete space of data associations. In addition, we include experimental results in a scenario where we track several interacting targets that generate these split and merged measurements.

In earlier work, we proposed treating wide baseline matching of feature points as a classification problem, in which each class corresponds to the set of all possible views of such a point. We used a K-mean plus Nearest Neighbor classifier to validate our approach, mostly because it was simple to implement. It has proved effective but still too slow for real-time use. In this paper, we advocate instead the use of randomized trees as the classification technique. It is both fast enough for real-time performance and more robust. It also gives us a principled way not only to match keypoints but to select during a training phase those that are the most recognizable ones. This results in a real-time system able to detect and position in 3D planar, non-planar, and even deformable objects. It is robust to illuminations changes, scale changes and occlusions.

This paper presents a dynamic conditional random field (DCRF) model to integrate contextual constraints for object segmentation in image sequences. Spatial and temporal dependencies within the segmentation process are unified by a dynamic probabilistic framework based on the conditional random field (CRF). An efficient approximate filtering algorithm is derived for the DCRF model to recursively estimate the segmentation field from the history of video frames. The segmentation method employs both intensity and motion cues, and it combines dynamic information and spatial interaction of the observed data. Experimental results show that the proposed approach effectively fuses contextual constraints in video sequences and improves the accuracy of object segmentation.

We present a real-time method for detecting deformable surfaces, with no need whatsoever for a priori pose knowledge. Our method starts from a set of wide baseline point matches between an undeformed image of the object and the image in which it is to be detected. The matches are used not only to detect but also to compute a precise mapping from one to the other. The algorithm is robust to large deformations, lighting changes, motion blur, and occlusions. It runs at 10 frames per second on a 2.8 GHz PC and we are not aware of any other published technique that produces similar results. Combining deformable meshes with a well designed robust estimator is key to dealing with the large number of parameters involved in modeling deformable surfaces and rejecting erroneous matches for error rates of up to 95%, which is considerably more than what is required in practice.

Training datasets for learning of object categories are often contaminated or imperfect. We explore an approach to automatically identify examples that are noisy or troublesome for learning and exclude them from the training set. The problem is relevant to learning in semi-supervised or unsupervised setting, as well as to learning when the training data is contaminated with wrongly labeled examples or when correctly labeled, but hard to learn examples, are present. We propose a fully automatic mechanism for noise cleaning, called 'data pruning' and demonstrate its success on learning of human faces. It is not assumed that the data or the noise can be modeled or that additional training examples are available. Our experiments show that data pruning can improve on generalization performance for algorithms with various robustness to noise. It outperforms methods with regularization properties and is superior to commonly applied aggregation methods, such as bagging.

Iris is an important biometric method with high reported accuracy. However, current iris recognition systems require substantial user cooperation in the image acquisition. Relatively little is known about how iris recognition might perform with less stringent control of image quality. We have re-implemented a Daugman-like iris matchingmethod, and evaluated its performance on an image dataset of over 12,000 images from over 300 persons, with iris images of different qualities. We find an overall rank-one recognition rate using of 89.64%. Poor quality images account for most of the instances of incorrect recognition. Inaccurate segmentation is also a key problem. These results show that greater flexibility in use of iris recognition will require further work on handling images of non-ideal quality. We also explore the use of multiple images for representing a person.

We present a novel approach for visual tracking of structured behaviour as observed in human-computer interaction. An automatically acquired variable-length Markov model is used to represent the high-level structure and temporal ordering of gestures. Continuous estimation of hand posture is handled by combining the model with annealed particle filtering. The stochastic simulation updates, and automatically switches between, different model representations of hand posture that correspond to distinct gestures. The implementation executes in real time and demonstrates significant improvement in robustness over comparable methods. We provide a measurement of user performance when our method is applied to a Fitts’ law drag-anddrop task, and an analysis of the effects of latency that it introduces.

Camera matchmoving is an application involving synthesis of real scenes and artificial objects, in which the goal is to insert computer-generated graphical 3D objects into live-action footage depicting unmodeled, arbitrary scenes. This work addresses the problem of tracking the 3D motion of a camera in space, using only the images it acquires while moving freely in unmodeled, arbitrary environments. A novel feature-based method for camera tracking has been developed, intended to facilitate tracking in online, time-critical applications such as video see-through augmented reality and vision-based control. In contrast to several existing techniques, which are designed to operate in a batch, offline mode, assuming that the whole video sequence to be tracked is available before tracking commences, our method operates on images incrementally, as they are being acquired.

This paper describes an efficient pattern recognition method for detecting vulnerable spots within an RNA sequence. Mutations in these spots may lead to a structural change that directly relates to a change in functionality. Previously, the concept was tried on RNA genetic control elements called ‘riboswitches’ and other known RNA switches. Here, the concept is extended to assist in planning in-vivo experiments in general, using a new tool that we have developed called RNAMute. We apply the package RNAMute on an RNA transcript that was shown experimentally to inactivate spectinomycin resistance in Escherichia coli by creating a library of point mutations using PCR and screening to locate those mutations. Our prediction, conducted independently of the known experimental results, succeeds in matching the inactivating point mutations that were obtained by the selection experiment. Validation of the method with data available from laboratory experiment supports its use as a general predictive tool.
