Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a popular feature extraction technique for face recognition. However, It often suffers from the small sample size problem when dealing with the high dimensional face data. Fisherface and null space LDA (N-LDA) are two conventional approaches to address this problem. But in many cases, these LDA classifiers are overfitted to the training set and discard some useful discriminative information. In this paper, by analyzing different overfitting problems for the two kinds of LDA classifiers, we propose an approach using random subspace and bagging to improve them respectively. By random sampling on feature vector and training samples, multiple stabilized Fisherface and N-LDA classifiers are constructed. The two kinds of complementary classifiers are integrated using a fusion rule, so nearly all the discriminative information is preserved. We also apply this approach to the integration of multiple features. A robust face recognition system integrating shape, texture and Gabor responses is finally developed.

Indexing echocardiogram videos at different levels of structure is essential for providing efficient access to their content for browsing and retrieval purposes. We present a novel approach for the automatic identification of the views of the heart from the content of the echocardiogram videos. In this approach the structure of the heart is represented by the constellation of its parts (chambers) under the different views. The statistical variations of the parts in the constellation and their spatial relationships are modeled using Markov random field models. A discriminative method is then used for view recognition, which fuses the assessments of a test image, by all the view-models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work addressing the analysis of the echocardiogram videos for the purpose of indexing their content. The method presented could be used for multiple-object recognition when their parts represent the objects and there are structural similarities between them.

The problem of multibody motion segmentation is an important and challenging issue in computer vision. In this paper, a novel segmentation technique based on simulated annealing (SA) is proposed. According to the fact that under linear projection models, feature points of multibody reside in multiple subspaces, firstly, a meaningful energy function is proposed, which favors the correct formation of those subspaces, and some subspaces are generated as the initial state. Then, two strategies of subspace evolution and transformation are developed to optimize the energy function in a manner of simulated annealing. The ultimate configuration of these subspaces will reveal the inherent multiple subspace structure embedded in the data space. The classification of data points to these subspaces is equivalent to multibody grouping. The global optimization process results in an increase of robustness with noise tolerance. The method is also effective in degenerate cases. Promising results on synthetic and real data are presented.

In this paper we present a novel method for estimation of blood flow speed and vessel location from thermal video. The method is based on a bioheat transfer model that reflects the thermo-physiological processes in a skin region proximal to a major vessel. The model assumes the form of a partial differential equation (PDE) with boundary conditions. Initially, we test the soundness of our model by performing direct numerical simulation. Then, we solve the inverse problem both in steady and dynamic states on data provided by a thermal imaging system. Our method opens exciting possibilities in biometrics and biomedicine. Among others, it promises to revolutionize polygraph examinations by eliminating wiring and improving accuracy. It also establishes the feasibility of continuous 2D physiological monitoring of human patients in a contact-free manner.

A light field consists of images of a scene taken from different viewpoints. Light fields are used in computer graphics for image-based rendering and synthetic aperture photography, and in vision for recovering shape. In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to calibrate camera arrays used to capture light fields using a plane + parallax framework. Specifically, for the case when the cameras lie on a plane, we show (i) how to estimate camera positions up to an affine ambiguity, and (ii) how to reproject light field images onto a family of planes using only knowledge of planar parallax for one point in the scene. While planar parallax does not completely describe the geometry of the light field, it is adequate for the first two applications which, it turns out, do not depend on having a metric calibration of the light field. Experiments on acquired light fields indicate that our method yields better results than full metric calibration.

Helmholtz stereopsis guarantees unbiasedness by BRDF of the search for inter-image correspondences. In a practical setup, calibrated pixel sensitivity and corrected light anisotropy are required for the method to work well. In this paper a simple method for joint light-camera radiometric calibration is proposed. Such calibration is shown to be an ill-posed numerical problem. In the worst case of a single image pair, it can be regularized along epipolar lines only. The calibration problem becomes regularizable everywhere in the case of more pairs and cameras in a general position. A general, simple and fast calibration procedure is proposed that includes a regularizer for the single-pair case. It is shown in a ground-truth experiment that the accuracy of reconstructed surface normals improves by an order of magnitude after radiometric calibration.

Silhouettes contain rich information about the shape of objects that can be used for recognition and classification. We present a novel approach that allows us to reliably compute many useful properties of a silhouette. Our approach assigns for every internal point of the silhouette a value reflecting the mean time required for a random walk beginning at the point to hit the boundaries. This function can be computed by solving Poisson's equation, with the silhouette contours providing boundary conditions. We show how this function can be used to reliably extract various shape properties including part structure and rough skeleton, local orientation and aspect ratio of different parts, and convex and concave sections of the boundaries. In addition to this we discuss properties of the solution and show how to efficiently compute this solution using multi-grid algorithms. We demonstrate the utility of the extracted properties by using them for shape classification.

Semantic scene classification based only on low-level vision cues has had limited success on unconstrained image sets. On the other hand, camera metadata related to capture conditions provides cues independent of the captured scene content that can be used to improve classification performance. We consider two problems: indoor-outdoor classification and sunset detection. Analysis of camera metadata statistics for images of each class revealed that metadata fields, such as exposure time, flash fired, and subject distance, is most discriminative for both indoor-outdoor and sunset classification. A Bayesian network is employed to fuse content-based and metadata cues in the probability domain and degrades gracefully, even when specific metadata inputs are missing (a practical concern). Finally, we provide extensive experimental results on the two problems, using content-based and metadata cues to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed integrated scene classification scheme.

This paper proposes a new framework for image segmentation based on the integration of MRFs and deformable models using graphical models. We first construct a graphical model to represent the relationship of the observed image pixels, the true region labels and the underlying object contour. We then formulate the problem of image segmentation as the one of joint regioncontour inference and learning in the graphical model. The graphical model representation allows us to use an approximate structured variational inference technique to solve this otherwise intractable joint inference problem. Using this technique, the MAP solution to the original model is obtained by finding the MAP solutions of two simpler models, an extended MRF model and a probabilistic deformable model, iteratively and incrementally. In the extended MRF model, the true region labels are estimated using the BP algorithm in a band area around the estimated contour from the probabilistic deformable model, and the result in turn guides the probabilistic deformable model to an improved estimation of the contour. Experimental results show that our new hybrid method outperforms both the MRF-based and the deformable model-based methods.

This paper proposes an algorithm to simultaneously estimate both the 3D shape and parameters of a surface reflectance model from multiple views of an object made of a single material. The algorithm is based on a multiple view shape from shading method. A triangular mesh represents the shape of the object. The Phong reflectance model is used to model the surface reflectance. We iteratively find the shape and reflectance parameters that best fit all input images. Subdividing triangles in the mesh into smaller ones gradually refines the estimates of shape and reflectance model. The estimation takes into account both self-occlusion and self-shadowing. Analysis shows that the accuracy of reflectance estimation is limited by the triangle size in the shape model. We also propose to use Richardson extrapolation to overcome this and further refine the reflectance model estimate. The estimated 3D shape and reflectance model can be used to render the same object from different viewing directions and under different lighting conditions. Experimental results on both synthetic and real objects are given.
