A mission of chemical plume tracing (CPT) in near-shore and ocean environments is to navigate an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to find a chemical plume, to trace the plume to its source, and to declare the source location. It is necessary to recognize the declared odor source by using a visual system. Color images, which were taken in near-shore ocean environments when the source was declared, are very vague due to dim illumination conditions and fluid advection effects. This paper presents an iterative fuzzy segmentation (IFS) algorithm for extracting color components of the chemical plume and the odor source for visual confirmation of the correct declared odor source. The proposed approach might be of general interest in image processing and computer vision.

The new DVB-H standard allows broadcasting of audio/video content to mobile terminals. Such devices underlie severe restrictions concerning processing load and power consumption. The most computational intensive and therewith most power consuming part of such terminals is the decoding of the H.264/AVC video datastream. We present optimization strategies for software-based H.264/AVC video decoding as well as the architecture of an H.264/AVC decoding companion chip with specialized coprocessors, which targets the above mentioned restrictions(1).

In this paper, a recurrent functional-link-based neural fuzzy system (RFLNFS) is proposed for prediction of time sequence and skin color detection. The proposed RFLNFS model uses functional link neural network as the consequent part of fuzzy rules. The RFLNFS model can generate the consequent part of a nonlinear combination of the input variables. The recurrent network is embedded in the RFLNFS by adding feedback connections in the second layer, where the feedback units act as memory elements. An online learning algorithm, which consists of structure learning and parameter learning, is also presented. Finally, the RFLNFS is applied to two simulations. The simulation results of the dynamic system modeling have shown that the RFLNFS model can solve the temporal problem and the RFLNFS model has superior performance than other models

A new spatio-temporal approach is proposed for fast block motion estimation in video coding. The approach exploits the existing correlation of the spatio-temporal block neighborhood by utilizing the frequency of appearance of the neighborhood's motion vectors. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm performs close to the Full Search Algorithm (in terms of quality) with a significant computational gain. Under fine tuning of specific parameters, the algorithm becomes comparable to other fast search algorithms.

In this paper, we present an automated video surveillance system designed to 1) ensure efficient selective storage of data, 2) provide means for enhancing privacy protection, and 3) secure visual data against malicious attacks. The proposed solution is a 3-module system processing captured video data before storage. Salient motion detection is used to retain relevant sequences and identify regions of interest with potential privacy-sensitive details. Then, an invertible and secure privacy preserving process is performed using a DCT-based scrambling technique on selected regions. To secure visual data and allow for data authentication, a self-embedding watermarking technique is applied on each image sequence. It offers the capability of proving authenticity as well as locating manipulated regions. Furthermore, this technique is also able to recover and reconstruct a good approximation of original lost content. In addition to a low computational complexity, simulation results show the effectiveness of the whole system in achieving its goals in terms of security and privacy enhancement of automated video surveillance data.

The well-known vehicle detectors utilize the background extraction methods to segment the moving objects. The background updating concept is applied to overcome the luminance variation which results in the error detection. These systems will meet a challenge when detecting the vehicles in the traffic jam conditions at sunset. The vehicles will cover the road surface so that the background information cannot be smoothly updated. Once the traffic is released, the existing background is not suitable for the moving segmentation. The main contribution of this paper is that an efficient vehicle detection approach is proposed to improve the detection accuracy in traffic jam conditions. The land mask decision gives the land information and the merged boundary box rule is presented to realize vehicle detection. The signed square normalized correlation coefficient calculation is addressed, and it is applied to vehicle tracking. The experimental results show that this approach works well in highway and urban area with high accuracy

With the rapid advances in computing and electronic imaging technology, there has been increasing interest in developing computer aided medical diagnosis systems to improve the medical service for the public. images of ocular fundus provide crucial observable features for diagnosing many kinds of pathologies such as diabetes, hypertension, and arteriosclerosis. A computer-aided retinal image analysis system can help eye specialists to screen larger populations and produce better evaluation of treatment and more effective clinical study. This paper is focused on the immediate needs for clinical studies on diabetic patients. Our system includes multiple feature extraction, robust retinal vessel segmentation, hierarchical change detection and classification. The output throughout this system will assist doctors to speed up screening large populations for abnormal cases, and facilitate evaluation of treatment for clinical study

Post dispatch analysis of signals obtained from digital disturbances registers provide important information to identify and classify disturbances in power systems, looking for a more efficient management of the supply. In order to enhance the task of identifying and classifying the disturbances $providing an automatic assessment - techniques of digital signal processing can be helpful. The Wavelet Transform has become a very efficient tool for the analysis of voltage or current signals, obtained immediately after disturbances occurrences in the network. This paper presents a methodology based on the discrete wavelet transform to implement this process. It uses a comparison between distribution curves of signals energy, with and without disturbance. This is done for different resolution levels of its decomposition in order to obtain descriptors that permit its classification, using artificial neural networks

Elastic graph matching is one of the most well known techniques for frontal face recognition/verification and one of the few techniques that can be combined successfully with fully automatic face localization and alignment methods. In this paper we propose a series of techniques that enhance the performance of elastic graph matching in frontal face verification by exploiting the individuality of human facial features in many ways. First the use of discriminant analysis in the feature vectors of the graph nodes is explored. The use of the node deformation for discrimination is also proposed. Moreover, the local similarity values at the nodes of the elastic graph, are weighted by coefficients that are also derived from some discriminant analysis in order to form a total similarity measure between faces. We present an algorithm that combines all the above discriminant steps. Moreover, we propose an algorithm for finding the most discriminant landmarks upon a person's face and a person-specific graph is placed in the spatial coordinates that correspond to these discriminant features. We illustrate the improvements in performance by the proposed advances in frontal face verification using the XM2VTS database

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can occur in people with or without previous lung disease. Analysis of aeration in artificial ventilation for ARDS is one of the major applications of computed tomography (CT) lung density examination. A movie of an affected rabbit lung over the respiratory cycle was produced by dynamic CT with a cine loop technique. This technique can produce thousands of CT images for analysis with a single experiment. A fully automated algorithm based on the capability of wavelet transformation to detect edges in the image is proposed. This method accurately and consistently segments the lung in pulmonary CT images. The speed and accuracy of this technique allows it to outperform other methods when dealing with the large number of images created by dynamic computed tomography
