A machine vision based keg inspection system can allow cost effective keg tracking and preventative maintenance programs to be implemented, leading to substantial savings for breweries with large keg fleets. A robust keg serial number recognition and keg condition assessment process is required to cater for different keg brands and a range of keg ages in the fleet. It has been demonstrated that the proposed image processing methodology, and neural network based number recognition system, successfully located and identified keg serial numbers with a 92% digit accuracy. Furthermore, the vision system allowed the concurrent assessment of the keg condition by assessing deformity of the keg rim, and that of the filler valve. A correlation coefficient, generated using a template matching process, proved to be a suitable metric which adequately indicated rims within and outside acceptable deformity bounds

In this paper, we present a progressive image reconstruction scheme based on the semantically scalable multi-scale edge representation of images, with the resolution and visual quality scalable to various bitrate requirements. In the multi-scale edge representation an image is decomposed into its multi-scale primal sketch and the background where the multi-scale primal sketch preserves the structural semantics of images, and the background represents the smooth locale. Edge compensation is performed to smoothly remove edges at each scale. The multi-scale edges are then embedded encoded using the GFA modeling. The image reconstruction is progressively achieved by synthesizing multi-scale edges on the reconstructed image obtained from previous scale. As edge synthesis is performed at consecutive scales, the visual quality of the reconstructed image is progressively enhanced. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme performs well at low bit-rate multiresolution representation and progressive reconstruction

The overall objective of this paper is to present n methodology for reducing the human workload through adapting an automatic scheme for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) engines. The proposed system utilizes an unsupervised hierarchical clustering algorithm, known as the directed self-organizing tree map (DSOTM) that aims to closely mimic the process of information classification thought to be at work in the human brain. In further refine the search process and increase retrieval accuracy, a semi-automatic relevance feedback approach is presented in this work. The semi-automatic scheme refers to a relevance feedback CBIR engine, structured around the DSOTM algorithm. This system aims to learn from and adapt to different users' subjectivity under the guidance of an additional objective verdict provided by the DSOTM. Comprehensive comparisons with the rank-based, relevance feedback, and automatic CBIR engines, demonstrate feasibility of adapting the semi-automatic approach

Julia sets are fractal subsets of the complex plane defined by a simple iterative algorithm. Julia sets are specified by a single complex parameter and their appearances are indexed by the Mandelbrot set. This study presents a simple generalization of the quadratic Julia set that requires two complex parameters. The generalization causes the Mandelbrot set indexing the generalized Julia sets to become 4-dimensional and hence difficult to use as a visual index. An evolutionary algorithm is used to search the space of generalized quadratic Julia sets. A type of fitness function is presented that permits the artist exert some control over the appearance of the resulting Julia sets. The impact of different versions of the fitness function on the resulting Julia sets is explored. It is found that the designed fitness functions do give substantial control over the appearance of the resulting fractals

Why can the compound eye of an insect capture the prey so exactly and quickly? From the biological aspect, the compound eye is excellent at detecting motion. Based on the computer vision aspect, limited studies regarding this issue exist. It has been verified that a trinocular visual system incorporating a third CCD into a traditional binocular is very helpful to solve translational motion. Extending from this concept, a spherical compound-like eye of superposition type for pan-tilt rotational motion is established. It can be concluded that the more the number of ommatidium in an insect has, the higher the detection capability of capturing prey becomes. In this paper, the secret of compound-eye of insects is explored through the point of view of computer vision

This paper describes a new method for moving object tracking, using complex wavelet transform. Real-valued wavelet transform is widely used in tracking applications, but it suffers from shift-sensitivity. Daubechies complex wavelet transform is more suitable for tracking due to approximate shift-invariance nature. The proposed method is intelligent enough to segment the object from a scene. Segmentation in the first frame has been done by computing multiscale correlation of imaginary component of complex wavelet coefficients and then object is tracked in next frames by computing the energy of complex wavelet coefficients corresponding to the object area and matching this energy to that of the neighborhood area. The proposed method is simple and does not require any other parameter except complex wavelet coefficients for segmentation as well as tracking

Using OCR programs is one of the best ways to convert written and printed documents into digital form. The first phase in OCR is segmenting the input image and identifying text and non-text regions. This paper proposes a new method for segmentation of Persian printed texts which is based on the ink spread effect. Considering that the Persian scripts are very different from the English script, most methods proposed for the English script have not rendered good results for the Persian scripts. The method proposed in this paper has been designed considering the special features of the Persian scripts. In addition, one of the most important characteristics of this method is resistance to skew. Moreover, the proposed approach is directly applicable to Arabic scripts

The research described in this paper uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to evolve wavelet and scaling coefficients for transforms that outperform discrete wavelet transforms (DWTs) under conditions subject to quantization. Compression and reconstruction transform pairs evolved against a representative training image reduce mean squared error (MSE) by more than 22% (1.126 dB) when subsequently applied to test images at a single level of decomposition, while evolved three-level multiresolution analysis (MRA) transforms average more than 11% (0.50 dB) MSE reduction when applied to test images in comparison to the Daubechies-4 (D4) wavelet, without increasing the size of the compressed file

Chaos theory has been reported to simulate partial functions (i.e., neuronal activity in brain) of the human visual system. In this work, we propose a chaotic synchronization-based representation of semantic entities (objects, events) in surveillance scenes using MPEG-7 low level Ds. MPEG-7 visual descriptors are used to extract low-level features of video objects. The chaotic synchronization is used to perform feature binding (i.e., group semantically relevant feature elements) from these Ds. The objective is to search for unique numeric descriptions (based on low-level features) to identify semantic entities. The idea of a semantic space is introduced to explain feature binding from multiple feature spaces. Subjective evaluation (based on classification) shows the existence of such numeric description for related semantic entities (e.g., male, female, automobile, multiple persons, enter appear, move)

A FIR Filter design method and its respective tool using genetic algorithms were developed. The main feature of this method is to offer a transparent mode for the user who doesn't know evolutionary computation, as well as its parameters. The user inputs the filter specifications and gets a sub-optimal result in an average number of four attempts. The sub-optimal criterion was based on the Rabiner, Parks and McClellan algorithm and the implemented software was built using the GALOPPS tool
