In the recent years，various new seawater reverse osmosis(SWRO)technologies like high recovery system design，internally staged design(ISD)concept，interlocking end-caps，split-partial second passes，UF/MF as pretreatment and advanced energy recovery devices have been *** are，altogether，dreams that finally have come true and we can already analyze the first results because，either in new plants or in existing ones，these new ideas are in *** purpose of this presentation is to prove the SWRO desalination affordable and to show field experiences from selected cases in which these new ideas are used and by having a look at the results try to conclude till which extend the theoretical advantages were justified or not.

With the increased production of seawater desalination，issues about the drainage of *** seawater desalination have attracted extensive concern day by *** present，the brine discharged from seawater desalination projects is almost poured into sea directly，which not only causes the marine environmental pollution，such as the unexpected rising of the seawater salt degree which brings on the death of fish，alga，and the worsens of ecological environment gradually;but also esults in a enormous waste of resource if drained directly not by *** herein，according to present research situation of seawater utilization all over the world，we propound the combined technology of seawater desalination coupled with extracting potassium，lithium and bromine from the discharged brine separately，and making use of brine as working medium for solar pond，which generates electricity to supply desalination system，thereby forms an effective cycle of whole seawater *** the above mentioned methods，it can not only improve the drainage of discharged brine，but also reduce costs of desalinization by assistant techniques.

Pollution from metallurgy wastewater containing dangerous heavy metals has always been a serious problem in China since *** application of nanofiltration(NF)/reverse osmosis(RO)process for treatment of metallurgy wastewater to reduce industrial water consumption and water reuse was *** by physical-chemical methods in practical wastewater plant of metallurgy industry,the secondary metal effiuent together with synthetic water were then tested for reutilization by RO and NF membranes in *** showed that high salt removal efficiency of RO could reach 97％and 79％for NF with a relative low COD value of 35 mg L-1 in its *** product water by both NF and RO desalination satisfied the State Reutilization Qualification，but NF should be more suitable for large-scale industrial practice，which offered significantly higher permeate flux at lOW operating pressure and therefore effectively reduced operating costs.

uid flow through a spiral-wound membrane module was investigated using a computational fluid dynamic(CFD)*** flow phenomenon through spacer-filled channels depends on geometries：characteristic angle，mesh size，voidage and filament ***，little emphasis has been placed on studying this property and its effect on the performance of the membrane *** study focused on the influence of the curvature of spacer-filled channels on the pressure drop and shear stress distributions in spiral-wound membrane *** results show that there are inherent changes in the hydrodynamic behavior of the spacer-filled channel due to curvature *** increase in curvature of the spacer-filled channel results in an increase in the difference in shear stress between the inner and outer *** conjecture from the simulated numerical *** imbalance of shear stress between the inner and outer walls may result in an unequal deposition ot colloidal material between these two regions and could shorten the service time of the *** understanding derived from the CFD analysis could improve the construction of a better spacer and module design，which could optimize the filament arrangement and the membrane module performance.

A source of irrigation water is needed to meet the demands of golf and residential uses at a new development on New Providence Island in the ***，a comprehensive hydrogeological investigation was conducted to study the feasibility of developing a raw water supply for a proposed reverse osmosis (R0) *** study included field investigations and the development of a three-dimensional variable-density SEAwAT *** model was calibrated using salinity data collected from adjacent test wells and a man-made lake that may be utilized for withdrawal *** from shallow wells constructed in close proximity to the lake was also *** calibration,the model was used to evaluate the long-term water quality changes that may occur in the source water due to different withdrawal *** results indicate the raw water total dissolved solids (TDS)concentration would increase quickly due to vertical igration of salt from *** raw water salinity remains well below that of seawater and thus，treatment costs will be approximately 50％lower using the brackish-water source than standard seawater RO treatment *** results of model simulations indicate that there is no significant difference between well or lake withdrawals.

In a paper1presented at the IDA World Congress in Bahrain in 2002，an evaluation was undertaken of the commercial，major energy recovery devices(ERD).These units included the impulse turbine(Pelton wheel)，hydraulic turbo charger，work exchanger，pressure exchanger and reverse running ump(Francis turbine).It was found the most energy efficient systems were the two exchangers;the least plausible device was the reverse running *** Francis turbine is installed in a number of older membrane desalination plants，for it was the first such unitoffered tO the trade.A detailed examination of the cases depicted in the paper indicated that，for large plants，the impulse turbine was now closely approximating its highest practical，operational efficiency，90％.The two exchangers，with pressure transfer efficiencies of 92％-94％，have little room for further improvement except for reducing the level of fluid *** from the brine to feed *** now amounts to about 3％to 6％.Demonstration of equipment life，and scale-up of the pressure exchanger beyond small and medium size plants is *** work exchanger has favorable economic value，basically，in plants whose train sizes are in excess of about 6,000m3/d(1.6MGD).

Due to advantages compared to alternative sources of flesh water，large SWRO desalination plants (production>30000 m3/d)have become a lucrative option for the solving of water carcity-demonstrated by a remarkable increased number of such plants online over the last couple of *** desalinated water is relatively expensive because of high capital And operating *** process is energy intensive，making the power bill responsible for 30％to 40％of the specific costs per m3 *** makes energy recovery systems an important component of such *** AG Switzerland is the world leader in supplying energy recovery technologies to the SWRO *** is the only company providing energy recovery devices based on two different technologies，the product range includes an isobaric device(work exchanger，DWEER)as well as a centrifugal device(Pelton turbine，ERT).On the basis of four examples of large scaled SWRO desalination plants，various approaches of plant-designs suitable for the different energy recovery technologies will be described and discussed regarding design-and operational *** will be shown that，depending on certain circumstances，both technologies have their merits and decision·criteria for the evaluation of the most adequate energy recovery technology will be ***，it will be demonstrated that a Pelton-turbine is rather a proofed than an ancient technology，and why specific energy consumption is an important but not the only criteria which has to be considered for supplying desalinated water at a reasonable and competitive price.

In this paper an industrial and a potable reuse application is *** first one describes the reclamation of refinery/petrochemical effiuents for reuse as boiler make-up water，an bjective that is met by the employment of an advanced multi-barrier system，which includes ultrafiltration and reverse *** plant has been in operation for fifteen months and shows excellent performance，*** level of silica，one of the most crucial parameters，is reduced from approximately 100 mg/l in the raw water to 6 μg/lin the boiler make-up *** second case described involves the reuse of secondary municipal effiuent as potable *** are several indirect potable reuse applications(*** California)，but Windhoek has the world's only direct potable reuse *** to its limited water resources and severe droughts in the past，the city of Windhoek depends on the reclamation of secondary *** potable water is reclaimed in the New Goreangab Water Reclamation plant (NGWRP，21，000 m3/d)，an advanced multi-barrier system with ultrafiltration as a final *** system provides several barriers for each crucial parameter(*** such as cryptosporidia and giardia).Hence all the requested clean water standards have been met safely(***：11 μg/l;requested 20μg/l).As cost calculations *** reuse applications are ***，they are essential in order to safe the water supply.

A challenging problem that faces planners，designers and operators of power-desalination projects is the optimum selection of power and desalting technology in order to optimize the joint production of water and power by the *** the basis of selection was minimal costs for stand alone，baseload production of water and *** optimal design of a dual purpose plant should take into account the individual site demands for electricity and water expressed in terms of the power to water ratio(PWR)，the total network situation，the cost of energy，capital costs of plants and then the design is optimized for the lowest cost alternative，depending upon the ratios of water to baseload power and peak to baseload electricity *** to the high cost of power—desalination plants，the Gulf countries are considering feasible alternatives with the minimum investment and operating costs and optimal supply of water and ***，the optimization problem is complicated by the significant seasonal mismatch between water and power demands and the increasing future demand of water over power due to the fast rate of industrial and Social development and continuous population ***，choice of the optimal technology in cogeneration plants is made more difficult due to the large number of the combinations of desalination technologies and power facilities that could be coupled *** of power systems with electrically driven desalination technologies resents promising design alternatives capable of minilnizing PWR while satisfying the other constraints of an optimal selection of the power-desalting *** paper reviews briefly different desalination technologies，summarizes the main components of power plants utilizing fossil fuels and presents a variety of hybrid configurations for dual purpose plants emphasizing their advantages and limitations.

iwan has plenty of rainfall about 90 billion m3/yr,however,Taiwan still faces to the instability of water supply ecause of uneven distribution over space and *** industrial water demand will substantially increase from 1.7 billion m3/yr in 2006 to 2.8 billion m3/yr in *** guarantee the enough water supply for domestic and industrial *** new water resources are *** water resources include the reclamation of agricultural return water and sewage，seawater desalination，and reuse/recycle/reclamation of industrial water and *** meet the requirement of good quality and enough quantity,Industrial Technology Research Institute(ITRI)has developed and demonstrated several water and wastewater reclamation *** example，BioNET reactor filled with porous compressible carriers has been applied for the reclamation of agricultural return water and lake water,it can offer a large surface area for adherence and growth of microorganisms.A Full—scale plant operation with 15，000 m3/d of capacity showed that BioNET process is high efficiency and *** for removal of organics and *** the industrial wastewater reuse/*** combination of anaerobic reactor,membrane bioreactor,and reverse osmosis is applied in TFT-LCD industry；the electrodialysis system is used in steel industry for make-up of cooling *** meet further zero(or near-zero)liquid discharge requirement，membrane distillation and membrane crystallization with high heat transfer efficiency will be evaluated in the future.
