In this paper, an improved ultrasonic system for detection of falling objects or alive beings intrusion in railways is presented. The basic ultrasonic array sensor is composed of four emitters and six receivers and can be easily extended to a higher coverage area repeating this elementary structure. The receivers are able to distinguish among the signals coming from the four different emitters thanks to the signal coding with complementary sets of sequences, which also gives to the reception module an excellent process gain. The signal processing has been accomplished by means of the Efficient Set of Sequences Correlator which has been recently developed by the authors. © 2004 ieee.

Wavefield Modeling is a formalism for array processing based on expressing the output of a sensors' array as a product of a wavefieId-independent sampling matrix and an array-independent coefficient vector. This approach turns out to be very useful in practical algorithms for array processing and direction finding, such as the MUSIC and Root-MUSIC algorithms;specifically, it yields an extension of the MUSIC and Root-MUSIC algorithms to general 2D arrays. A numerical study of those two direction finding methods in the case of closely-spaced radiatng sources, shows that the resolution capability of Root-MUSIC is less sensitive than MUSIC to calibration errors in the sensors' gains. ©2004 ieee.

An effective and simple algorithm for localization of epileptiform sources of the EEC signals within the brain has been developed here. The method includes a constrained blind source separation (CBSS) algorithm, which attempts to separate and localize the epileptifom EEG sources. The significance of the new developed algorithm is the incorporation of a proper constraint into the joint approximate diagonalization formulation. The fixed locations of the electrodes together with the normalized correlations between the estimated sources and the observed EEGs provide a sufficient geometrical information to localize the sources. © 2004 ieee.

In this paper, we propose a new spectral search-based direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method which extends the concept of the conventional ESPRIT DOA estimator to a much more general class of array geometries than assumed in the conventional ESPRIT technique. A computationally efficient search-free implementation of the proposed generalized ESPRIT algorithm is also developed. Simulation results compare our approach and the rank reduction (RARE) algorithm which are shown to have nearly identical performance. ©2004 ieee.

This work describes a sensor array based on optical emitters, which allows to detect obstacles in railways. The sensorial system consists of a barrier of emitters and another of receivers, placed at opposite sides of the railway. Apart from the disposition of the sensorial system, it is necessary a codification method for the emission in order to detect the reception or the non-reception of transmissions between an emitter and a receiver. The method is based on a signal codification using complementary sequence pairs, suitably adapted for their simultaneous emission through the transmission channel. A high reliability under adverse conditions is achieved with the developed system, being possible to detect the presence of obstacles, and to inform about their situation. ©2004 ieee.

By exploiting cyclostationarity that is inherent in many communications signals, Cyclic MUSIC has been shown to be able to perform signal selective Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation under colored noise and clutter. However, the DOA estimation of Cyclic MUSIC is actually biased. We show in this paper that the bias of DOA estimation can be substantially reduced and the performance can be improved by properly choosing the frequency for evaluating the steering vector. We also propose another algorithm that exploits cyclic conjugate correlation to further improve the performance of DOA estimation. Simulation results show the effectiveness of both approaches. ©2004 ieee.

In this paper, we first present a new criterion for nonlinear principal component analysis (PCA) available for blind source separation (BSS) of convolutive mixture. Then we derive a novel recursive least square (RLS) algorithm for time-domain BSS. Although several existing methods of time-domain BSS can avoid the indeterminacy of permutation and gain which makes the BSS problem difficult in frequency domain, they generally converge slowly. The proposed new algorithm has fast convergence. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. ©2004 ieee.

The space-time adaptive processing (STAP) technique was originally conceived to suppress clutter (and jamming) received by radar on board moving platforms such as aircraft;this was so because of the clutter ridge in the Doppler frequency and angle (spatial frequency) plane. In fact, the clutter echoes appear coupled in angle and Doppler frequency. When the platform is stationary this coupling does not exist anymore. However, the STAP technique still seems valuable when clutter and jamming are present and their statistical features are not known a priori. This paper demonstrates this statement by showing results concerning the processing of recorded live data. It also tackles the problem of selecting an algorithm to work in a nonstationary, nonhomogeneous environment. ©2004 ieee.

In this paper, the linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamforming problem is formulated in the frequency domain based on the time-domain formulation of the cost function and the constraints. We then derive a frequency-domain constrained adaptive broadband beam-forming algorithm, which has a much lower computational complexity than the time-domain algorithm, although it suffers from a slower convergence speed, as shown by simulations. It is however an attractive option when the implementation of the time-domain algorithm is prohibitive due to large computational complexity. An alternative implementation of this constrained frequency-domain algorithm using the generalised sidelobe canceller (GSC) structure is also studied. ©2004 ieee.

A robust constrained blind source separation algorithm (C-BSS) has been developed here for an effective removal of eye muscle artifacts from electroencephalograms (EEG). Presently, clinicians reject a data segment if the patient blinked or spoke. The rejected data segment may contain important information that may be masked by the artifact. In the CBSS technique we exploit a reference signals as a constraint. The constrained problem is then converted to an unconstrained problem by means of nonlinear penalty functions weighted by the penalty terms. This leads to the modification of the overall cost function, based on a stocastic gradient algorithm, by incorporating a reference signal. © 2004 ieee.
