This paper describes the implementation in silicon of a retina-like sensor characterized by a space-variant resolution similar to that of the human retina. Besides the actual implementation using CMOS technology, the design peculiarities of retina-like sensors are compared with the use of software or hardware electronic remappers. The paper also describes the realization of a retina-like digital camera and its applications for realtime control and image transmission.

This paper describes the experimental application of sensors array and multichannel digital signal processing to the equalization of the acoustic field in car compartments. The aim of this multichannel active noise control system is not simply to cancel undesirable noise but to reshape the sound field around the listener's head. A modified version of the filtered-X LMS active noise equalizer algorithm has been developed and extended to multiple channels. A 4100 type Bruel dummy head and torso with two calibrated microphones at the ear's canals has been used to obtain sound levels in an hypothetic listener's ears. The equalization points are not only the error sensors position bat an area around them which is measured using the manikin. It has been found that at low frequencies the zones of equalization created around the point of control are larger enough to cover the movements of the head without disturbing algorithm 's stability.

In this paper we introduce a new algorithm for the estimation of source location parameters from array data given prior distributions on unknown nuisance source signal parameters. The conditional maximum-likelihood (CML) formulation is employed, and ML estimation is obtained by marginalizing over the nuisance parameters. In general, direct solution of this marginalization ML problem is intractable. We introduce an expectation-maximization. (EM) algorithm solution, which is applicable to any prior distribution.

This paper describes a 2-D adaptive array for separating uncorrelated sources. A matrix preprocessing beamformer, which will result in outputs from individual sources in the steady state, is used. The beamformer is updated periodically using the most recently available source location estimates. These estimates are in turn refined by using the beamformer outputs to adaptively eliminate correlated components in a reference element of the array. Although its initial convergence may be rather erratic, the adaptive algorithm has low O(M) complexity and has only 1 asymptotic time constant.

This work presents a general framework for identification of multipath channel. Connexion between different methods are established, allowing comparison of performances. Several blind identification algorithms are;proposed depending of the temporal correlation of the fadings. Moreover we have proposed an approximate ML method which is low computationaly cost and quasi optimal.

New analytic results on the convergence of a blind decision directed adaptive algorithm in a beamforming application are presented. The data received at multiple antennas is assumed to consist of a desired PSK signal plus additive Gaussian noise and interference. The mean improvement in output SINR obtained with one iteration of the adaptive algorithm is predicted. This is used to estimate the number of iterations required for convergence. Results are presented for BPSK and QPSK signals. The performance of the decision directed algorithm and a constant modulus algorithm is also compared.

A quantitative model for interferogram data collected in a quantum-limited hyperspectral imaging system is derived. This model accounts for the geometry of the interferometer the Poisson noise, and the parameterization of the mean of the noise in terms of the autocorrelation function of the incident optical signal. An estimation-theoretic approach to recovering the image spectrum is derived, based on the likelihood function for the received data. The computations proposed constitute an alternating minimization algorithm.

array processing techniques for source detection and localization in an underwater acoustic environment are highly sensitive to both environmental modeling errors, such as sound propagation conditions, and sensor gain mismatch. Sonar arrays, which are normally rigorously calibrated before placement, may develop gain mismatch due to mechanical failures or local environmental variations, such as sediment build-up. In order to avoid performance degradation of detection and localization algorithms, a sensor gain calibration process can be carried out periodically. This paper proposes a maximum likelihood algorithm for sensor gain calibration in a shallow water environment. In the presence of environmental uncertainties, a robust algorithm is required, and such an algorithm is consequentially developed. The proposed method is based on the simultaneous estimation of the relative gains and the acoustic transfer function. To improve the accuracy of the sensor gain estimation, a-priori knowledge of the relationship between the sensor gains at different frequencies is exploited. Performance of the proposed calibration method is evaluated via simulations.

Iterative quadratic maximum likelihood (IQML) is an efficient approach for estimating the directions of arrival (DOA) of signals impinging on a uniform linear array. It is desirable to apply the IQML method in beamspace SO as to take advantage of the benefits of beamspace operations in terms of reduced computational complexity and improved resolution thresholds. The difficulty with beamspace IQML is that the Vandermonde structure of the array manifold may not preserve during the beamspace transformation. We tackle this obstacle using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) beams and derive a parameterized polynomial in the beamspace dimension. The proposed beamspace IQML algorithm is computationally efficient, and provides satisfactory estimation results.

Interferometry has been used for decades to image distant electromagnetic sources at long wavelengths. However, the long data collection intervals have prevented imaging rotating objects such as planets. We will show that one can craft an interferometric imaging algorithm using synthetic aperture beamforming techniques by doing linear beamforming on the correlation domain data rather than the signal-domain data. We will then use this analogy to show how it is possible to create previously unrealized interferometric images of a rotating spherical blackbody.
