This paper is concerned with the construction of an adaptive beamformer, which uses the dominant subspace information of a sample covariance matrix. We assume that the sample covariance matrix and its eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) are to be updated as data arrive. We present a unified structure for updating the EVD and introduce a robust method for adapting the rank of the dominant subspace. We use the EVD of the sample covariance matrix to build a fast rank- and weight-adaptive beamformer. A useful component of the beamforming routine is a fast algorithm for updating the estimates of the direction of arrival of the dominant sources.

We introduce a new approach to the detection problem for "fully augmentable" arrays (whose set of intersensor differences is complete). We propose a transformation of the directly augmented (non-positive-definite) Toeplitz matrix into a p.d Toeplitz matrix T-mu with the proper number of equal minimum eigenvalues, appropriate for the candidate number of sources mu. comparison of the results of these best-fit transformations over the range of candidates then allows us to select the most likely number of sources (m) over cap using traditional criteria, Simulation results demonstrate the high performance of this method.

At the Defence Research Establishment of Sweden (FOA) an experimental S-band receiving digital array antenna for radar applications has been designed and built. It consists of a horizontal uniform linear array (ULA) of 12 antenna elements, whose digitized signals are processed in non-real time in a computer. Accurate calibration is utilized. We have compared several spectral and parametric direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation methods for varying DOA separations, number of samples and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) on measured data from an anechoic chamber. At ideal conditions the resolution can be improved considerably with model based DOA methods compared to conventional beamforming. We achieved a resolution below 1/10 of the resolution of conventional beamforming.

The monopoulse technique for target angle estimation fails when there is sidelobe and/or mainlobe jamming. If not effectively encountered, electronic jamming prevents successful radar target detection and tracking. We have developed a technique which cancels one mainlobe jammer and multiple sidelobe jammers in such a way that enables both target detection and unbiased monopulse angle estimation. Our technique makes use of adaptive digital beamforming for sidelobe jamming cancellation followed by a mainlobe canceller for mainlobe jamming cancellation. A constrained adaptation is imposed to maintain the mainbeam in the sidelobe cancellation process.

The purpose of this work is to introduce two variations of an approach to adaptive beam-forming for wide-band sensor array systems using a subband decomposition. Subband decomposition facilitates a computational complexity efficient approach to the adaptive beam-forming problem. We derive optimal adaptive weights in the subband domain using two optimality criteria: (a) maximum SINE, and (b) mint mum MSE. It is shown that, unlike the narrow-band case where these criteria yield the same weights up to an overall multiplicative constant, here the two criteria result in different adaptive weights. Explicit conditions for this approach are given. Further, an approach for avoiding spatial mismtch errors is shown.

Multiple transmitters and receivers can be used to provide high link capacity in future wireless systems. Herein analysis of real indoor environment Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output measurements on the 5.8 GHz band is performed. The possible increase in capacity, utilizing multiple transmit and receive elements is examined. The gain possible when using channel knowledge at both transmitter and receiver is shown and the capacity dependence on the intra-element distance is examined for the experimental system and compared to simulations.

This paper deals with noise suppression in multichannel measurements, using a certain signal model but without assuming stationarity of the signals involved. This enables application to signals whose spectral characteristics are time-variable. The novelty consists of an algorithm for obtaining an approximation of the Wiener filter for each channel. The filters are computed using the Weyl transform and estimates of the time-frequency coherence function between all channel pairs. Time-frequency coherence functions are estimated using the multiple window method, adapted to peaked spectra. Our method is evaluated on EEG signals from epileptic seizure onsets which are measured at multiple locations on the scalp. The filtered signals give improved time-frequency representations, and also the resulting filters studied in the time-frequency domain reveal otherwise not visible signal features.

In this paper, we develop simple principal and minor subspace tracking algorithms that exactly maintain the orthonormality of the subspace matrix estimate over time. Each of these algorithms use m identical Householder transformations to update the rows of the subspace matrix estimate at each time instant. Unlike many other approaches, ours have asymptotic complexities that scale linearly with the number of adaptive coefficients. We show that existing gradient-based and projection approximation subspace tracking (PAST) methods are first-order approximate versions of our proposed methods, and we also derive several more-accurate approximations. Simulations verify the excellent numerical behaviors of the proposed methods in subspace tracking tasks.

Multipath propagation has a significant impact on the performance of cellular and Personal Communication Services (PCS) systems in urban environments. This paper contains analyses to better understand urban multipath and examines the use of base-station antenna arrays to obtain spatial diversity. The results are based on data collected on large sparse aperture arrays and finely sampled arrays at a location below surrounding rooftop heights for both PCS and cellular frequencies. A statistical model is formulated to explain the relationship between multipath scatterers and signal cross-correlations as a function of antenna spacing.

Singular value decomposition (SVD) is analytically inherent in various reduced rank filters and/or estimators. But the computation of SVD is generally not an efficient way for rank reduction. This paper introduces an efficient approach to computing for rank reduction. This approach, referred to as alternate power (AP) method, is globally and exponentially convergent under a weak condition, and is a generalization of the conventional power method for subspace computation. The AP method is especially useful for computing the reduced rank filter (RRF) by Brillinger, the reduced rank Wiener filter (RRWF) by Sckarf, and the reduced rank maximum likelihood estimate (RRMLE) by Stoica and Viberg.
