Modulated codes (MC) are error correction codes (ECC) defined on the complex field. In this paper, we study space-time MC for memory channels. Similar to MC for single antenna systems, the space-time MC can also be naturally combined with a multiple antenna system with ISI. We derive some lower bounds on the capacities C and the information rates I/sub i.i.d./ of the MC coded systems. A novel blind separation approach using higher-order time-frequency distributions is presented. The concept of higher-order time-frequency distribution matrix is also introduced. It is devised to primarily separate sources with temporal nonstationary signal characteristics. So far, this problem has been solved using statistical information available on the source signals. In contrast to well known blind source separation approaches using second-order statistics (SOS) and/or higher-order statistics (HOS) which rely on stationarity properties of the signals, the proposed approach allows separation of the sources with nonstationarity properties. In addition, the effect of spreading the noise power while localizing of the source energy in the time-frequency domain amounts to increasing the signal to noise ratio. A computationally feasible implementation is presented based on joint diagonalization of the matrices of the principal slices of the time-multifrequency domain of support of the cumulant-based Wigner trispectrums. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A polarization-based spread-spectrum spatio-temporal signaling scheme is proposed in this paper for transmitters consisting of an array of vector radiators. Each vector radiator consists of two closely spaced perpendicular antennas and each antenna is assigned a unique signature sequence. At the receiver, all three electric field components of the scattered signal are measured using an array of vector sensors. Each vector sensor consists of three closely spaced perpendicular antennas. The proposed polarization signaling scheme is cast in the framework of a general multiple antenna system. The distinguishing feature of polarization signaling lies within the resulting channel statistics. In particular, polarization signaling can be exploited to achieve diversity gain using less physical space than conventional antenna array approaches. We identify the key parameters controlling system performance and evaluate the relative advantages of polarization signaling under constraints of aperture size and number of antenna elements for given spatial scattering statistics.

The problem of estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of narrow-band sources impinging on a uniform circular array is considered. We present a method that uses as input the values of a small number of uniformly spaced beams and apply a model-fitting approach taking into account the statistical properties of the beams. The approach called the "global matched filter" fits simultaneously to the observations all the elements from a given dictionary needed to explain them. It chooses among all the so-obtained representations satisfying a given physically appealing constraint the one with minimal energy. This representation is in general quite sparse. The method drastically improves upon the conventional beamformer and has performance comparable to the best high resolution techniques. It further applies when the number of sources exceeds the number of sensors, a situation that cannot be handled by standard high resolution techniques.

X-ray CT scanners provide images of transverse cross sections of the human body from a large number of projections. During the data acquisition process, which usually takes about one second, motion such as respiration, cardiac motion and patient restlessness produce artifacts that appear as blurring in the reconstructed images and may lead to inaccurate diagnosis. This paper proposes a motion correction method that makes no assumptions about the properties of the motion. The approach uses a spatial overlap correlator (SOC) scheme to track organ motion in computed tomography (CT) imaging systems. An adaptive interference cancellation (AIC) algorithm is then used to correct for organ-motion artifacts. Synthetic data tests demonstrate the validity of this approach.

The performance in DS-CDMA systems suffers in multipath channels. Some performance is recoverable through the use of a RAKE receiver when the path delays are separated by more than a chip duration and may be estimated. However, this technique fails when the path delay differences are less than a chip duration. In this difficult situation it is proposed that a technique called matched field processing (MFP) be applied. In MFP, a propagation model is assumed and used to represent the channel between the mobile and the base station. The channel model parameters can be estimated from the data and then used to form a receiver to estimate the transmitted data. This paper presents and analyzes an MFP based receiver for a DS-CDMA system with a base station comprised of an array of antennas.

We introduce a new conceptually simple and computationally effective solution to the maximum likelihood (ML) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation problem that consists of maximizing the likelihood function (LF) over a set of points derived from the data. Two different data-supported optimization (DSO) based techniques are formulated which use the data-supported grid points obtained by means of ESPRIT-like and root-MUSIC-like methods, respectively. The first technique is shown to be the method of choice in the short sample size case, whereas the second technique is applicable to situations where the number of snapshots is large. We show that the data-supported grid search of the LF provides the performance similar to that achieved by the genetic algorithm (GA), but at a significantly lower computational cost.

In this paper we investigate the downlink capacity enhancement in GSM by employing an antenna array at the base station. The space division multiple access (SDMA) approach allows multiple users to be served on the same frequency and time slot. The proposed two-dimensional channel model reflects a realistic spatio-temporal scenario of scatterers and is compatible with GSM specifications. The downlink beamforming scheme employed, based on the estimation of spatial covariance matrices, maximises the average carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR), but may suffer from the non-observability of the downlink channel in FDD. To overcome this problem, a frequency transposition technique is used to approximate the downlink from the uplink channel second order statistics. Furthermore, in order to ensure that CIR for each user is kept above a required level and to optimise the trade-off between capacity and CIR performance, two spatial channel allocation strategies are applied. The resulting capacity enhancement is evaluated via simulations in terms of several system parameters.

Deterministic broadband time-varying pulses such as chirp signals are widely used in seismic applications to determine the layering structure of the earth. Various broadband matched field processors (MFP) which have been already developed for use in inversion rely on only their frequency distribution so their performance fails in the presence of similar powerful broadband correlated noises. Because chirp and other deterministic time-varying signals have distinct signatures in time-frequency space, we have introduced a cross relation based MFP in time-frequency space that incorporates these signatures in the processing to counter the effect of broadband correlated noises in the received data. Additionally, white noise can be removed by using a cross-cross relation (CCR) time-frequency (TF)-MFP that contains only cross components of the received signals in its structure. We demonstrate the advantages of this process over the conventional MFPs to date.

New results are derived that describe the statistical performance of the MVDR (minimum variance distortionless response) adaptive beamformer when the weights are computed utilizing the sample covariance matrix and diagonal loading. It is well known that undesirably high sidelobes are generated when the unaugmented sample covariance matrix is used as an estimate of the true covariance matrix in adaptive beamforming algorithms. In practice, diagonal loading is frequently employed to reduce this deleterious effect. However, surprisingly little information is available in the technical literature that enables the user to predict the statistical performance of the MVDR algorithm when the sample covariance matrix and diagonal loading are employed. We help fill this gap by generating an approximate probability density function for the adaptive beam response for the diagonally loaded MVDR algorithm. The approximations are valid for an important class of signal scenarios. The utility of the new analysis is demonstrated via simulation. In particular, the new results are used to estimate the probability density function of the range sidelobe level for a wideband radar system in which adaptive beamforming and pulse compression are implemented in subbands.
