Wireless sensor networks have been applied successfully in real-time distributed and collaborative sensing. In these situations, each sensor is responsible for extracting pertinent information from the surrounding environment and transmitting it to other sensors and/or to the main processing station. This is done while operating under several constraints, such as low computational capabilities, limited arithmetic precision, and the need to conserve power. In this paper, we present a low-complexity voice activity detector and a gender classifier for implementation on the Crossbow sensor motes. In addition, a decision fusion algorithm that resides at the base station is also implemented. A series of experiments that characterize the performance of the algorithms under varying conditions and in different environments are presented and several of the challenges we faced in developing this real-time implementation are discussed.

Conformal array is attractive due to its flexibility to attach to different shape of surface. However, beam pattern synthesis for conformal array to control power side lobes and different polarization components for two dimensional angle space is a challenge, especially the degree of freedom is limited. In this work, we propose a robust beam pattern synthesis formulation for conformal array based on constrained convex optimization. By penalizing the maximum gain of cross-polarization component levels, power side lobes and different polarization components are controlled in a manner that the number of constraints is no longer limited by the array DoF. The proposed formulation is a convex second-order cone programming, a computationally efficient algorithm based on the alternating directions of multipliers method is designed to solve it. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation to synthesize a desired pattern with robustness.

Following a geometric paradigm, the estimation of a Toeplitz structured covariance matrix is considered. The estimator minimizes the distance from the Sample Covariance Matrix (SCM) while complying with some specific constraints modeling the covariance structure. The resulting constrained optimization problem is solved globally resorting to the Dykstra' projection framework. Each step of the procedure involves the solution of two convex sub-problems, whose minimizers are available in closed form. Simulation results related to typical radar environments highlight the effectiveness of the devised method.

The Bayesian mixture of factor analyzers (BMFA), which achieves joint clustering and dimensionality reduction, is with an appealing feature of automatic hyper-parameter learning. In addition to its great success in various unsupervised learning tasks, it exemplifies how the Bayesian statistics can be leveraged to achieve automatic hyper-parameter learning, which is an open problem of modern simultaneous (deep) dimensionality reduction and clustering. Due to the importance of the BMFA, in this paper, its mechanism is carefully investigated, and a robust variant of the BMFA that can mitigate potential outliers is further proposed. Numerical studies are presented to show the remarkable performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of accuracy and robustness.

We address the problem of passive estimation of the Time-Difference of Arrival (TDOA) of an unknown, stochastic signal, at two sensors. The key question addressed here is whether additional sensors, receiving the same signal at various relative delays, can serve to improve the accuracy in estimating the TDOA of interest between the first two sensors (without exploiting any underlying parameterization, such as dependence on the transmitter's location). We derive the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) on the resulting joint estimation error in a model which possibly includes multipath reflections. We show analytically, that in a multipath-free scenario, at high to moderate signal to Noise Ratios, additional sensors do not offer any improvement in accuracy. However, we also demonstrate (numerically) that in the presence of multipath reflections (possibly received at all sensors), the additional sensors can indeed assist in estimating the TDOA of interest with improved accuracy.

Electronic noses and tongues are two recent examples in chemical sensing that employ statistical array techniques in order to overcome the intrinsic limitations of current solid-state chemical sensors like ion-selective field transistors (ISFET). In particular, ISFETs are sensitive to the concentration of a particular ion in a solution to be measured, but it can be also strongly affected by several interfering ions found in the solution. Hence, they must be employed in regions in which the effect of interferences is negligible thus limiting their range of operation. However, since ISFETs behave as non-linear mixers of main ion activities and interfering ones, an attempt to separate the original main ion activity and interferences from the mixed response is suitable with blind source separation (BSS) techniques and related methods like independent component analysis (ICA) methods. In this direction, several experiments with real ISFET measurements demonstrate the interest of employing BSS for dealing with the separation in ISFET responses, and further reconstruction, of ion activities in those operating regions in which interferences notably affect their response.

Frequency diverse array (FDA) radar for joint range and angle estimation has drawn much attention, but Doppler estimation is often ignored in the literature. In this paper, we propose joint range, angle and Doppler estimation for FDA-multiple-input multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar. In order to reduce the computation complexity, the Doppler is independently estimated firstly by the extended invariance principle instead of maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. Next, the range and angle are estimated separately with the unstructured model. That is, the three-dimensional search problem of joint range, angle and Doppler estimation is simplified into three one-dimensional search problems. The superiorities of the proposed method over conventional ML algorithms are verified by numerical results.

This paper concerns the problem of array shape estimation from clutter (ASEC) for a towed active sonar array. Although heading sensors can provide towed-array shape information, they are sometimes not sufficiently available or accurate to facilitate beamforming with low sidelobe levels necessary for detection of low-Doppler targets, especially in the presence of severe bottom reverberation. We propose a maximum likelihood array shape calibration technique that exploits the azimuth-Doppler frequency relationship of the clutter by fitting the reverberation snapshots from a single sonar ping to the low rank space-time clutter subspace.

Sparsity based signal recovery has seen great success in solving underdetermined systems of equations. This success is due, in large part, to a relaxation: the l0-norm is replaced by the l1-norm, which results in a convex problem. However, such a relaxation may lead to a suboptimal solution, one that may even be asymptotically biased. We propose formulating sparse signal recovery as a binary program, and we derive the conditions under which such a formulation perfectly recovers the signal support. This derivation equips us with a constraint on the dictionary's spectrum. However, designing such a dictionary is a combinatorial problem, so we suggest a heuristic which can be readily satisfied using the alternating projections algorithm. Applied to angle of arrival (AoA) estimation using a sensor array, we show how this paradigm outperforms both the basis pursuit l1-norm relaxation and the Matrix Pencil method.

We consider iterative electromagnetic imaging of metallic targets hidden behind dielectric walls using sparse regularization. As in the equivalent-source method, we assume that the targets can be approximated by a set of filament currents whose locations are unknown. By using the iterative procedure, we reveal additional filament currents thus enlarging the target image. In order to take into account the mutual interaction between the current sources, and yet obtain the model amenable to signal processing, we combine the method of moments and the ray tracing.
