In this paper we analyze a two-step detection scheme for use in distributed sensor systems (e. g. statistical MIMO radar). The scheme arises when a data rate restriction forces each of the distributed systems to censor their detection statistics before sharing. We present the Neyman-Pearson (NP) two-step detection rule for a non-fluctuating target model (Swerling 0), which is non-linear and requires a priori knowledge of the target SNR. We then analyze the performance of a practical two-step detection rule under the non-fluctuating target model.

This paper proposes a novel wideband structure for array signal processing. A new wideband model is formed where the observations are linear functions of the source amplitudes, but nonlinear in the direction of arrival (DOA) parameters. The method lends itself well to a Bayesian approach for jointly estimating the model order and the DOAs through a reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure. The source amplitudes are estimated through a maximum a posteriori (MAP) procedure. The DOA estimation performance of the proposed method is compared with the theoretical Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for this problem. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the method.

This paper describes a 2-D adaptive array for separating uncorrelated sources. A matrix preprocessing beamformer, which will result in outputs from individual sources in the steady state, is used. The beamformer is updated periodically using the most recently available source location estimates. These estimates are in turn refined by using the beamformer outputs to adaptively eliminate correlated components in a reference element of the array. Although its initial convergence may be rather erratic, the adaptive algorithm has low O(M) complexity and has only 1 asymptotic time constant.

By taking the third-order statistical information of processes into account, the bispectrum is a useful tool in digital signal processing and statistics. The paper proposes a nonparametric approach of estimating the bispectrum, using tapers designed to achieve maximal bifrequency concentration. Bispectra are functions of two frequencies plus their sum, so the optimum tapers are not products of Slepian sequences. The new tapers minintize the sixth-moment "energy" leakage in the estimate, and thus the new multiple window bispectrum estimator (MWBE) can be interpreted as minimizing the broad-band bias. Alternatively, the MWBE can be viewed as a solution of an integral inverse problem using an eigenfunction expansion. This approach can be extended to estimate higher-order polyspectra. Numerical simulations use moving average (MA) data with non-Gaussian white driving noise. Simulation results with small sample sizes show that this new MWBE is feasible and mean-squared error (MSE) optimal.

We consider the distributed detection of a zero-mean Gaussian signal in an analog wireless sensor network with a fusion center (FC) configured with a large number of antennas. The transmission gains of the sensor nodes are optimized by minimizing the ratio of the log probability of detection (PD) and log probability of false alarm (PFA). We show that the problem is convex with respect to the squared norm of the transmission gains, and that a closed-form solution can be found using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. Our results indicate that a constant PD can be maintained with decreasing sensor transmit gain provided that the number of antennas increases at the same rate. This is contrasted with the case of a single-antenna FC, where PD is monotonically decreasing with transmit gain. On the other hand, we show that when the transmit power is high, the single-and multi-antenna FC both asymptotically achieve the same PD upper bound.

By means of frequency-shifting jamming processing of target echo signal and pulse compression in imaging processing, group of false targets will appear in different spatial locations around the true target. The feature extraction of false targets is complex and limited in existing countering methods. In this paper, an anti-jamming method against frequency diverse array (FDA) is proposed to identify the spatial location characteristics of the deception false targets. By adjusting the parameters of the radar transmitting signal, the method simultaneously transmits the anti-jamming signal and carries out the false target identification and elimination in the range dimension. Eventually, the optimal signal parameter design of anti-jamming signal is given by comparing with the range resolution. The validity of the proposed method is proved by deducing the mathematical model between the spatial distribution characteristics of the false targets and the radar transmitting signal parameters and demonstrated by simulations.

We consider a decentralized detection problem in a power-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs), in which a number of sensor nodes collaborate to detect the presence of a deterministic vector signal. The signal to be detected is assumed known a priori. Each sensor conducts a local linear processing to convert its observations into one or multiple messages. The messages are conveyed to the fusion center (FC) by an uncoded amplify-and-forward scheme, where a global decision is made. Given a total network transmit power constraint, we investigate the optimal linear processing strategy for each sensor. Our study finds that the optimal linear precoder has the form of a matched filter. Depending on the channel characteristics, one or multiple versions of the filtered/compressed message should be reported to the FC.

Radar obtains its parameters on an estimation grid whose cell size is related to resolution of underlying radar processing. Existing radar exploits a regular grid (i.e. constant resolution) although the resolution changes with stronger echoes at shorter ranges. We compute radar resolution from the intrinsic geometrical structure of data models that is characterized by the Fisher information. Based on this information-geometry approach, we create an estimation grid whose cells have a constant information distance. In addition, we explore how such an irregular estimation grid can suit radar processing in practice, and propose applying the information-based grid with the sparse-signal processing from compressive sensing. This novel radar processing is applied in an one-dimensional case of range estimation, with emphasis on the grid effects to the sensing incoherence. Results reveal the new flexibility in radar design.

We consider the problem of selecting anchors for sensor network localization to optimize a metric of the error covariance of the position estimates. We show that an interesting metric is a modular set function, which allows a globally optimal selection to be obtained using a simple greedy algorithm. We also consider a separate but related problem of choosing a subset of distance measurements between pairs of sensors to optimize a metric of the error covariance. We utilize again modularity properties of an associated set function to construct networks with desirable algebraic rigidity properties. The results are illustrated via numerical examples, which scale to problems beyond the capabilities of current state-of-the-art convex relaxation techniques.

Mobile satellite terminals especially with high-gain antenna require fast and accurate beam tracking algorithms for communication. The main topic of this paper is the extension of a tracking algorithm to mobile satellite communications, its implementation and performance. The presented considerations and simulation results concern low SNR condition and narrow antenna beam configuration as existing in satellite communications. The assumed satellite is geostationary. The work is presented in context of SANTANA-2 project, (Smart Antenna Terminal), founded and supported by the German DLR on behalf of BMBF. The realized terminal uses an antenna array in Ka-band and fully implements Digital BeamForming (DBF) to control the beam pointing direction and the antenna beam shape.
