In distributed sensor networks, the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) has recently been used [1] as a selection criteria for sensor management decisions, where new sensor nodes are deployed or existing ones reactivated to optimize the network's performance. Previous algorithms to compute the PCRLB are derived for the centralized [2] and hierarchical architectures [3] using a fusion centre that makes them inappropriate for distributed sensor management. Only recently a suboptimal expression [1] for the distributed architecture has been proposed, which can at times lead to large errors especially in systems with highly non-linear dynamics. The paper derives the optimal PCRLB for the distributed architecture. In other words, we derive a recursive procedure to determine the overall Fisher information matrix (FIM), i.e., the inverse of the PCRLB, from local FIMs of the distributed estimators. The proposed distributed PCRLB is independent of the filtering mechanism used and closely follows its centralized counterpart.

The passive electronically scanned array (PESA) is widely used due to its simple structure and low cost. Its antenna weights have unit modulus and thus, only the weights phases can be controlled. PESA has limited degrees of freedom for beampattern design, where only the direction of the main beam can be controlled. In this paper we propose a novel way to improve the beamforming capability of PESA by endowing it with more degrees of freedom via the use of double phase shifters (DPS). By doing so, both the magnitude and the phase of the antenna weights can be controlled, allowing for more flexibility in the beampattern design. We also take into account the physical resolution limitation of phase shifters, and propose a method to approximate a given complex beamformer using DPS. Simulation results indicate significant beamforming improvement even at low phase resolution.

As an emerging array processing technique, frequency diverse array (FDA) differs from conventional phased-array in that it employs a frequency increment across the array elements. The use of frequency increment provides FDA with an array factor with joint range-angle dependency, which finds wide applications in joint range-angle target localization and range-dependent interference/clutter suppression. In the open literature, an ideal point-like target in far field is generally assumed for FDA signal modelling. However, the reflectivity characterization for more realistic targets, which are not ideally point-like and even extended in range and azimuth angle, has not been reported for FDA radar. In this paper, we establish an echo signal model of FDA radar for a general target, and then analyze the statistics of the echo signal amplitude. More specifically, we reveal the amplitude decorrelation property between different FDA elements due to the use of frequency increment, which provides useful insight into frequency increment design. The target reflectivity characteristic analysis is validated by numerical results.

Self localization of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSN) attracts wide interest in the past few years. The main challenge is to adopt calibration algorithms to the low-power/low-bandwidth/low-cost constrains on each sensor in the network. In this paper we present a novel approach, in which position-known anchors transmit special calibration signals simultaneously. Each node measures only the received signal strength (RSSI), i.e. envelope of the sum of received signals, and estimates time difference of arrivals (TDOA) of the signals. Two or more TDOA measurements allow the node to estimate its own position in the WSN. Based on an analysis of the appropriate Cramer Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) on the TDOA estimates, we suggest the choice of calibrating signals which provide optimal performance. The theoretical results are supported by simulations of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimators and numerical evaluation of the CRLB for a specific scenario of interest.

We present a deep reinforcement learning approach to design an automotive radar system with integrated sensing and communication. In the proposed system, sparse transmit arrays with quantized phase shifter are used to carry out transmit beamforming to enhance the performance of both radar sensing and communication. Through interaction with environment, the automotive radar learns a reward that reflects the difference between mainlobe peak and the peak sidelobe level in radar sensing mode or communication user feedback in communication mode, and intelligently adjust its beamforming vector. The Wolpertinger policy based actioncritic network is introduced for beamforming vector learning, which solves the dimension curse due to huge beamforming action space.

A method is presented of performing geolocation of fixed emitters from a single, airborne platform using a two-element, very long baseline interferometer (VLBI) from 10 to 100 feet in length. The interferometer baseline is precisely tracked through a differential GPS system using auxiliary antennas placed in close proximity to the VLBI pair. A lever arm correction is applied to arrive at the VLBI baseline from the GPS measurements. A batch least squares processing algorithm is presented that operates on the interferometric phase measurements directly and resolves the associated ambiguities through global search strategies. A method of eliminating receiver phase bias by performing a difference operation is shown. Simulation results and Cramer-Rao lower bounds are also presented.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. The proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. This method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. This pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.

Frequency-diverse array (FDA) can provide a range-angle-time dependent beamforming capability that could make a difference in some radar applications. However, the joint range-angle estimation of FDA will inevitably increase the complexity due to the coupling range and angle response. Estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm cannot be used directly to estimate the angle and range because it does not meet the rotation invariance criterion. In this paper, an ambiguity function (AF)-based method is proposed to avoid the coupling range and angle problem for the FDA and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) combined radar to realize high-resolution range and angle estimation. Numerical results show its advantages over conventional method.

Compensation for nonlinear distortion caused by power amplifiers being driven into compression is a field that has been extensively explored by a number of authors. More complex models describing the coupled nonlinear distortion that can occur in an active antenna array also exist. To identify these models most authors assume that the output of each power amplifier can be measured directly. For a system with many antennas over-theair identification might be favorable. The problem of identifying a system describing the joint effects of coupled nonlinear distortion over-the-air has been solved by other authors assuming model or setup simplifications. To tackle the problem with a more accurate model, an algorithm for identifying parameters of a Volterra series model describing coupled non-linear distortion in a digital radar is explored and illustrated with simulated data.

Many threats in the form of human actions (terrorist attacks, military actions, etc.) can be stochastically modeled by someone with relevant expert knowledge. In this work, a threat is taken to be a sequence of actions that evolve over time and culminate at some ultimate goal. A model would be a hypothesis as to how a threat would develop, and what kind of observable evidence it would produce along the way. This modeling method allows us to attempt detection using the preliminary evidence of a threat. This would theoretically allow the user to take preemptive action;i.e. the user can interfere with the threat before its culmination. This work presents a method of stochastically modeling these types of processes using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). We then present a detection scheme based on random finite set (RFS) filters (Bernoulli filters) that allows for detection of multiple threat processes using a single cluttered stream of observed data.
