Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using coprime array is discussed, and a fast method using a sensor-saving coprime array with enlarged inter-element spacing is proposed. Original coprime array combines the results obtained from two coprime subarrays to uniquely determine the DOA estimation, and it is shown in this paper that one subarray actually only requires half of its original sensor number and can achieve enlarged inter-element spacing based on the array compensation from the cross correlation matrix. Thereafter, a fast DOA estimation method, which extracts the noise subspace without eigenvalue decomposition, is proposed to obtain coprime DOA estimations based on one dimensional root finding technique. Final unique DOA is estimated from the coincide results of the coprime estimations. Simulation results verify that the proposed method can achieve almost the same estimation performance as conventional methods while requiring less sensors.

In this paper, the elitist resampling particle filter (ERPF) is introduced. The ERPF is an approach to combine generic particle filters, i.e., the SIS and SIR particle filter, based on an evolutionary selection of particles, which introduces a long-term memory to the selected group of the particles. Thereby, the ERPF aims at fusing the advantages, e.g., robustness and computational efficiency, and mitigating the drawbacks of each filter, e.g., degeneracy and sample impoverishment. Two variants of the ERPF are presented in this paper: the discrete ERPF (DERPF) and the continuous ERPF (CERPF), which to the authors' knowledge represent new forms of particle filters. The two proposed hybrids are compared to the corresponding original filters using two well-established benchmark models to illustrate that the evolutionary combinations provide a better estimation accuracy and exhibit an increased robustness against outliers.

Polarized emissions from various astrophysical sources provide an additional means to infer the properties of the source. This information can be extracted by imaging the Stokes parameters characterizing these emissions, from the incomplete Fourier sampling measurements provided by the radio interferometer. To solve the corresponding ill-posed inverse problem, we recently proposed the Polarized SARA method which exploits the polarization constraint along with imposing an average sparsity prior for each of the Stokes parameters, encompassed in a reweighting approach. Motivated by the large amounts of data produced by the next-generation radio interferometers, in the current work, we propose a scalable version of this method, combined with an accelerating strategy. We showcase the performance of this improved method on a real dataset acquired by the Very Large array (VLA).

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered to be a key technology for fifth-generation mobile communication networks due to its superior spectral efficiency. In this paper, the problem of energy efficient subchannel and power allocation is investigated for a downlink NOMA heterogeneous network. The energy efficient resource allocation problem is first formulated as a mixed integer nonconvex optimization problem. By exploiting convex relaxation and dual decomposition techniques, a closed-form expression is derived via a Lagrangian approach. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can converge within ten iterations and obtain high system energy efficiency.

State-of-the-art hearing aids (HAs) can connect to a wireless microphone worn by a talker of interest. This ability allows HAs to have access to almost noise-free sound signals of the target talker. In this paper, we aim to estimate the direction of arrival (DoA) of the target signal, given access to the noise-free target signal. Knowing the DoA of the target signal enables HAs to spatialize the wirelessly received target signals. The proposed estimator is based on a maximum likelihood (ML) approach and a database of DoA-dependent relative transfer functions (RTFs), and it supports both monaural and binaural microphone array configurations. For binaural configurations, we propose an information fusion strategy, which decreases the number of parameters required to be wirelessly transferred between the HAs. Further, we show that the proposed method not only has lower computational complexity, but also performs better than recent DoA estimators, which have access to the noise-free target signal.

In recent years, the frequency diverse array (FDA) radar has attracted much attention due to its range-angle dependent beam-pattern. And multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar has been widely investigated with the advantage of transmit waveform diversity. In this paper, a FDA-MIMO Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) is proposed to achieve anti-jamming of ISAR imaging. LFM (Linear Frequency Modulated) and SFCS (Stepped-Frequency Chirp signal) signals are transmitted to jammer and targets respectively, and the received signals are matched filtering by the signal transmitted to the targets. So the jamming signal can't matched with the reference signal, the well anti-jamming effect can be obtained. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by the simulation results.

We present a method for cancelation of the acoustic crosstalk between the ears of a listener using a linear loudspeaker array. This allows for controlling the signals that arise at listener's ear independently of each other so that binaural cues can be imposed. We employ superdirective near-field beamforming (SDB) over the vast part of the frequency range. Allowing the listener to move in front of the array requires the computation of a new SDB solution for each possible position of the listener, which is a computationally expensive procedure. We show that the beamformer weights exhibit a very smooth evolution for listening positions along a line parallel to the array. This makes it straightforward to parameterize pre-computed beamformer weights with a few parameters for each frequency. Upon realtime execution, the beamformer weights can be determined efficiently for any arbitrary position along the listener contour from the parameters with negligible error. Simulation results show that the proposed beamformer provides a higher channel separation than previously published solutions while maintaining robustness.

Many threats in the form of human actions (terrorist attacks, military actions, etc.) can be stochastically modeled by someone with relevant expert knowledge. In this work, a threat is taken to be a sequence of actions that evolve over time and culminate at some ultimate goal. A model would be a hypothesis as to how a threat would develop, and what kind of observable evidence it would produce along the way. This modeling method allows us to attempt detection using the preliminary evidence of a threat. This would theoretically allow the user to take preemptive action;i.e. the user can interfere with the threat before its culmination. This work presents a method of stochastically modeling these types of processes using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). We then present a detection scheme based on random finite set (RFS) filters (Bernoulli filters) that allows for detection of multiple threat processes using a single cluttered stream of observed data.

The Square Kilometre array (SKA) will push the boundaries of radio astronomy. As such, it will need enormous computing power to process the tremendous amount of data it will produce. Significant savings in computing could be made if some of this processing was done in single-precision. This paper presents our end-to-end modelling of the SKA Imaging Pipeline. We model the signals received by the Central signal Processor (CSP) using our Sky Generator Model. We then process the sky signals with our CSP Correlator Model to generate the visibilities that are passed to the Science Data Processor (SDP). These visibilities are gridded Fourier transformed by our SDP Imaging Model to produce a dirty image. This dirty image is then deconvolved to produce an image of the sky. Through our models we investigate the error introduced with reduced numerical precision, and we perform various tests to explore the limits of single-precision processing.

The Dominant Mode Rejection (DMR) beamformer is designed to operate in non-stationary environments where few snapshots are available to estimate the sample covariance matrix (SCM). DMR assumes that the covariance can be split into orthogonal subspaces defined by the SCM eigenvectors: the first contains the loud interferers and the second contains the remaining signals and noise. The DMR approach requires an estimate of the rank of the interference subspace. Motivated by universal linear prediction, Buck and Singer propose a universal DMR beamformer that computes its weight vector as a linear combination of weight vectors for a set of fixed rank DMR beamformers. This universal DMR beamformer eliminates the need to explicitly estimate the rank of the interference subspace. Under reasonable mathematical assumptions, the universal DMR beamformer is guaranteed to converge to the performance of the best fixed rank beamformer in the set. This paper explores the performance of the universal DMR beamformer for a passive sonar data set acquired with a vertical line array deployed in the Philippine Sea.
