This article contains a study of how spatial errors and receiver imperfections affect the angle of arrival estimation accuracy for virtual antenna arrays. A virtual antenna array consists of one receiver element whose location is tracked as the element is moved and in this work, linear arrays are studied. If the location of the receiver is tracked using an inertial measurement unit, an interesting trade-off emerges. The array should extend as far as possible but since the position estimates from the unaided inertial measurement unit become increasingly uncertain over time, the angle of arrival estimation will deteriorate. Several algorithms are available for estimating the angle of arrival in such a scenario but the one used for evaluation here is a sparse enforcing least squares method.

This work is concerned with direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of narrowband signals from multiple targets using a planar antenna array. We illustrate the shortcomings of Maximum Likelihood (ML), Maximum a Posteriori (MAP), and Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimation, issues that can be attributed to the symmetry in the likelihood function that must exist when there is no information about labeling of targets. We proffer the recently introduced concept of Minimum Mean OSPA (MMOSPA) estimation that is based on the optimal sub-pattern assignment (OSPA) metric for sets and hence inherently incorporates symmetric likelihood functions.

Sparse estimation and compressive sensing techniques have been recently considered for radar estimation problems. It is frequently observed that these methods are robust to model uncertainties and substantially improve performance in scenarios with a low signal-to-noise. However, since current sparsity-based techniques are computationally costly and require a suitable discretization (grid), which strongly restricts resolution, they practically receive less attention. In this work, we present an application of a new sparsity-based technique to the specific problem of range-Doppler estimation. The method, generalizing basis pursuit, is less computationally complex and its performance is independent of the grid selection. We demonstrate that the proposed technique can improve estimation performance in difficult cases, as compared to the SAGE technique.

Bayesian compressive sensing using Monte Carlo methods is able to handle non-linear, non-Gaussian signal models. The computational expense associated with Monte Carlo methods is, however, a concern especially in scenarios requiring real-time processing. In this work, a theoretical model is derived that provides insight on the relationship between performance and computational expense for a Monte Carlo Bayesian compressive sensing algorithm. The theoretical model is shown to accurately describe the practical performance of the algorithm. Additionally, the theoretical model is able to inexpensively project the algorithm's performance characteristics for various SNRs and computational complexity levels. The model is then useful in assessing the method's performance under different operational requirements.

A new insight into the relationship between the complex circularity quotient and the coefficient of a linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) which estimates a complex random variable from its complex conjugate is established. An adaptive version of this estimator, suitable for real time tracking of the degree of complex circularity is proposed based on the complex least mean square (CLMS) algorithm. For Gaussian data, the mean and mean square analyses show the effect of data non-circularity on the stability bounds of the real time circularity tracker. The concept is verified over simulations on both synthetic single- and multi-channel data and on real world wind signals with varying degrees of circularity.

In this paper, a tensor n-mode matrix unfolding truncated nuclear norm is proposed, which is extended from the matrix truncated nuclear norm, to tensor completion problem. The alternating direction method of multipliers is utilized to solve this optimization problem. Meanwhile, the original two-step solution of the matrix truncated nuclear norm is reduced to one step. Employing the intermediate results returned by singular value shrinkage operator, rank information of each tensor unfolding matrix is not required and thus the computational complexity of the devised approach is not demanding. Computer simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We address the design of linear precoders and receivers in a MIMO Broadcast Channel (BC) with perfect Channel State Information (CSI) at reception but partial CSI at the transmitter. Our aim is to minimize the transmit power subject to per-user rate constraints when multiple streams of data are sent to each user. We develop a gradient-projection algorithm to convert the per-user constraints into per-stream constraints. The MIMO BC linear precoders and receivers that minimize the transmit power are then obtained with an alternating optimization algorithm.

Doubly-stochastic matrices are usually required by consensus-based distributed algorithms. We propose a simple and efficient protocol and present some guidelines for implementing doubly-stochastic combination matrices even in noisy, asynchronous and changing topology scenarios. The proposed ideas are validated with the deployment of a wireless sensor network, in which nodes run a distributed algorithm for robust estimation in the presence of nodes with faulty sensors.

A robust sparse regularization technique with applications to source localization in the presence of non-uniform gain distribution is presented. As a key component in sparse optimization, a proper choice of the regularization parameter is crucial. It renders high impact on the localization performance and has to account for any kind of model perturbation. Our proposed technique utilizes a statistical framework to provide a direct relation between the physical system parameters and the regularization parameter of the resulting optimization problem. It addresses the joint effects of sensor gain variations and noise. As a figure of merit, we consider the mean-squared error (MSE) between the perturbed measurements and the assumed underlying model. An upper bound of the MSE is attained in order to estimate the regularization parameter. The presented method shows good performance for moderate gain variances even in low SNR regimes.

A measure of the ability of a sensor array to resolve two closely spaced point sources in angle is proposed here based on the framework of information geometry. The consideration of the geometric structure of a measurement model leads to the concept of information resolution which serves as a new metric to measure intrinsic similarities and differences between signal distributions that generate the manifold geometry. The statistical divergence between two sources is characterized in terms of the geodesic distance induced by the Fisher information metric. An analytical expression of the angular information resolution limit (AIRL) is derived using the constraints on the probability of error for a binary hypothesis test associated with the resolution of two sources. The influence of the detection error as well as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on resolvability are demonstrated. The proposed AIRL can be used as a performance measure for sensor arrays in localizing remote sources and is applicable to various applications (e.g. radar, sonar, or astronomy).
