Compressive sensing (CS) has successfully been applied to reconstruct sparse signals and images from few observations. For multi-component nonstationary signals characterized by instantaneous frequency laws, the sparsity exhibits itself in the time-frequency domain as well as the ambiguity domain. In this paper, we examine CS in the context of nonstationary array processing. We show that the spatial averaging of the ambiguity function across the array improves the CS performance by reducing both noise and cross-terms. The corresponding time-frequency distribution which is reconstructed through L-1 minimizations yields significant improvement in time-frequency signature localizations and characterizations.

This paper presents two fast and computationally efficient interferometric algorithms that allow high accuracy, unambiguous angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimates to be obtained using physically large wideband antennas that are suitable for electronic surveillance. The performance of the algorithms are compared against conventional interferometric techniques using simulations and are also verified experimentally.

This paper describes a method for detecting and tracking multiple moving targets using a multistatic narrowband radar sensor array. We show that the appropriate model for the sensor array measurements is non-linear and the statistics are non-Gaussian. We use this model in conjunction with a Bayesian estimation algorithm which constructs a probability density on the number of targets and their states. The density is approximated using a novel hybrid discrete grid/particle filter. We evaluate the performance on a set of experimental data from a 6-channel array to detect and track two targets that cross, make sharp turns, and move nearly cross-radially to some pairs for a significant portion of the collect.

Current systems for multi-channel underwater signal processing suffer from a tied relation between the hardware and physical layer software or require a large amount of engineering work. To provide a low-cost, small form factor and flexible solution, this work presents a multi-channel testbed consisting of an off-the-shelf FPGA board and a simple expansion board. Nonetheless, the proposed testbed provides the flexibility and processing power to evaluate novel multi-channel physical layer algorithms.

The authors examine a technique to apply coherent signal subspace processing in the beam-space of a bank of true time delay beamformers. The technique is shown to be capable of resolving closely spaced sources while being inherently wideband in nature, computationally less expensive than many previous wideband coherent integration techniques, and does not rely on a preliminary angle of arrival estimate. The technique is examined for performance with various levels of noise in the system compared to previous methods and the Cramer-Rao theoretical performance bound.

Results in distributed compressed sensing show that this technique can be applied to wireless sensor networks in order to reduce the power consumption and the amount of channel uses. In this paper we extend such results with the study of the physical layer secrecy performance. In particular, we focus on an amplify-and-forward compressed sensing scheme (AF-CS) for the case when malicious eavesdropping nodes are listening. We demonstrate that this scheme achieves perfect secrecy in presence of one eavesdropper (and also for a small number of them). We also show that a very high number of eavesdropping nodes are required to perfectly recover the signal in comparison to other distributed compressed sensing schemes in the literature.

The wide-sense stationary assumption has been frequently employed in array processing, since it results in uncorrelated frequency bins and consequently major simplifications arise. However, unlike stationary signals, significant interfrequency correlations are observable in nonstationary signals like speech. Here, we drop the stationarity assumption and will show that taking interfrequency correlations into account leads to higher noise reduction. We develop a framework to design nonstationary beamformers similar to the stationary Frost beamformers. Based on the noise model, it can be used to design both fixed and adaptive beamformers. The nonstationary beamformer derived here is a set of time-varying filters and hence can be seen as a set of time-frequency or wavelet transform filters.

In this paper, random switch antenna array (RSAA) is proposed to apply to the switch antenna array (SAA) frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system. Firstly, the signal model and signal processing method of RSAA is analyzed and it shows that RSAA can successfully solve azimuth-velocity coupling problem. Then we suppose a method by using RSAA to reduce the switching frequency and sampling rate based on sparse signal representation with multiple measurement vectors (MMV). It is shown in simulations that the proposed algorithms yield better performance in terms of azimuth-velocity decoupling and can obtain high image accuracy with less observation data.

This work studies a new beamformer for non-periodic sparse bidimensional ultrasonic array transducer. It is based on a weighting factor based on signals phase dispersion to enhance the image points where the phase coherence between the received signals is high. A method to measure the phase dispersion based on Fourier analysis and its integration in the beamformer are presented. Its performance is evaluated using a non-periodic 2D sparse array based on Fermat spiral with 96 elements and a diameter of 60 lambda. Compared with conventional Delay-And-Sum beamformer the proposed solution reduces the aperture lateral resolution and improves its dynamic range, achieving up to 50dB of contrast in the image and less 1 degrees in lateral resolution.

The authors examine optimization of the antenna array beamformer bank for a technique to apply coherent signal subspace processing in the beam-space of a bank of true time delay beamformers. This technique offers computational expense advantages over element-space methods, Mean Square Error (MSE) performance similar to wideband coherent subspace techniques and is frequency invariant. This article reports on simulation experiments to improve the true time delay beamformer bank configuration so as to optimize MSE performance of source direction resolution for closely spaced wideband sources. Simulations include pattern search, genetic algorithm and simulated annealing global optimization methods. Results indicate that performance can be significantly improved by applying these methods to the beamformer bank design.
