An energy-efficient opportunistic collaborative beamformer with one-bit feedback is proposed for ad hoc sensor networks over Rayleigh fading channels. In contrast to conventional collaborative beamforming schemes in which each source node uses channel state information to correct its local carrier offset and channel phase, the proposed beamforming scheme opportunistically selects a subset of source nodes whose received signals combine in a quasi-coherent manner at the intended receiver. No local phase-precompensation is performed by the nodes in the opportunistic collaborative beamformer. As a result, each node requires only one bit of feedback from the destination in order to determine if it should or should not participate in the collaborative beamformer. Analytical results show that the received signal power obtained with the proposed beamforming scheme scales linearly with the number of available source nodes. Since the optimal node selection rule requires an exhaustive search over all possible subsets of source nodes, two low-complexity selection algorithms are developed. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of opportunistic collaborative beamforming with the low-complexity selection algorithms.

Using spatial diversity to detect narcotics and explosives using NQR signals

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) offers an unequivocal method of detecting hidden narcotics and explosives. Unfortunately, the practical use of NQR is restricted by the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and means to improve the SNR are vital to enable a rapid, reliable and convenient system. In this correspondence, we develop two multichannel detectors to counter the typically present radio frequency interference. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed methods offers a significantly improved robustness to uncertainties in the parameters detailing the examined sample.

Parametric GLRT for multichannel adaptive signal detection

This paper considers the problem of detecting a multichannel signal in the presence of spatially and temporally colored disturbance. A parametric generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is developed by modeling the disturbance as a multichannel autoregressive (AR) process. Maximum likelihood (ML) parameter estimation underlying the parametric GLRT is examined. It is shown that the ML estimator for the alternative hypothesis is nonlinear and there exists no closed-form expression. To address this issue, an asymptotic ML (AML) estimator is presented, which yields asymptotically optimum parameter estimates at reduced complexity. The performance of the parametric GLRT is studied by considering challenging cases with limited or no training signals for parameter estimation. Such cases (especially when training is unavailable) are of great interest in detecting signals in heterogeneous, fast changing, or dense-target environments, but generally cannot be handled by most existing multichannel detectors which rely more heavily on training at an adequate level. Compared with the recently introduced parametric adaptive matched filter (PAMF) and parametric Rao detectors, the parametric GLRT achieves higher data efficiency, offering improved detection performance in general.

Multidimensional frequency estimation with finite snapshots in the presence of identical frequencies

Recently, an eigenvector-based algorithm has been developed for multidimensional frequency estimation with a, single snapshot of data mixture. Unlike most existing algebraic approaches that estimate frequencies from eigenvalues, the eigenvector-based algorithm achieves automatic frequency pairing without joint diagonalization of multiple matrices, but it fails when there exist identical frequencies in certain dimensions because eigenvectors are not linearly independent anymore. In this paper, we develop an eigenvector-based algorithm for multidimensional frequency estimation with finite data snapshots. We also analyze the identiflability (ID) and performance of the -proposed algorithm. It is shown that our algorithm offers the most relaxed statistical ID condition for multidimensional frequency estimation from finite snapshots. More important, we introduce complex weighting factors so that the algorithm is still operational when there exist identical frequencies in one or more dimensions. Furthermore, the weighting factors are optimized to minimize the mean square errors,of the frequency estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers competitive performance when compared to existing algebraic approaches but at lower complexity.

A relationship between time-reversal imaging and maximum-likelihood scattering estimation

Time-reversal methods have attracted increasing interest recently. The so-called computational time-reversal approach creates an image of the illuminated scene by computing the back-propagated field and is useful for detecting and estimating targets in the scene. In Shi and Nehorai ["Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Point Scatterers for Computational Time-Reversal Imaging," Communications in Information and Systems, vol. 5, no. 2, pp. 227-256, 20051], we estimated point scatterers by maximum-likelihood estimate (MLE) using the Born-approximated physical model, as well as the Foldy-Lax model. In this correspondence, we further find an explicit relationship between energy-based basic time-reversal imaging and the MLE approach: the time-reversal imaging function differs by only a scaling factor from the likelihood imaging function using the estimated scattering potential when a single-scatterer model is employed. Furthermore, this scaling factor is a function of the imaging position only. We show that, as a result, time-reversal imaging has a near-far problem that tends to produce a weaker image for areas further away from the imaging arrays, whereas the MLE-based image is more balanced. Experimental results confirm this conclusion.

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for a spatio-temporal extension of the well-known method of orthogonal iterations in linear algebra. This algorithm estimates an n-input, m-output (m ≪ n) paraunitary filter bank from a multichannel data auto-correlation sequence to maximize the total output power of the filter bank when applied to an n-dimensional input signal. We then show how this procedure can be used to generate reduced rank signal representations of recordings of m audio sources in a room as collected by an n-channel microphone array. The importance of the method for determining the number of active sound sources in a room for convolutive blind source separation is also discussed.
